數(shù)字是表示數(shù)目的文字或表示數(shù)目的符號(hào),其基本功能是計(jì)數(shù),從理論上來講是單調(diào)的、枯燥的。然而,在文學(xué)作品中特別是詩歌中數(shù)字卻變得有韻味,有魅力,它往往并不表示確切的數(shù)量概念,而是一個(gè)泛化的虛數(shù),也就是數(shù)字的語義模糊現(xiàn)象,數(shù)字的語義模糊性給文學(xué)作品帶來了音韻和畫意,但同時(shí)也給翻譯工作帶來了一定的難度,本文將針對(duì)文學(xué)作品中比喻與非比喻數(shù)字的翻譯進(jìn)行簡(jiǎn)單得談?wù)摗?/p>
1 表比喻的數(shù)字
文學(xué)作品中表比喻的數(shù)字可以分為兩種情況,翻譯時(shí)需要分別處理:
1.1 有些比喻性強(qiáng)的詞語,可以采取直譯,但這類詞語并不多,例如:九牛二虎之力 the strength of nine bulls and two tigers
1.2 文學(xué)作品中有些表比喻的數(shù)字一般都不是確切的數(shù)字,因此在翻譯時(shí)也不能譯成確切的數(shù)字,往往根據(jù)目標(biāo)語的語言習(xí)慣和目標(biāo)語讀者的接受程度來翻譯。例如:
(1)這些問題盤根錯(cuò)節(jié),三言兩語說不清。These problems are too complicated to be explained clearly in a few words.
(2)我們一直往前走吧!不要三心二意。Lets go straight ahead. Dont be wavering.
(3)他這幾天心里七上八下,老是安靜不下來。His mind was in a turmoil these days and he was quite unable to think strairght.
(4)But when you attempt to reconstruct it in words, you will find that it breaks into a thousand conflicting impressions.可是當(dāng)你打算用文字來重現(xiàn)此情此景時(shí),它卻化作千頭萬緒互相沖突的印象。
(5)One of the million things we take on trust is that a beer bottle contains twelve ounces.因?yàn)槲覀儗?duì)無數(shù)事情都深信不疑,其中之一就是每瓶啤酒應(yīng)裝12盎司。
(6)后宮佳麗三千人,三千寵愛在一身。All the powdered ladies of the six palacesAt once seemed dull and colourless./In inner palace dwelt three thousand ladies fair;On her alone was lavished royal love and care.
2 非表比喻的數(shù)字
在文學(xué)作品中,英語中雖然沒有表比喻的數(shù)字,譯成漢語時(shí)根據(jù)意思可以適當(dāng)增加,這樣的例子也比較常見。例如:
(1) Bad news travels fast.惡事傳千里。
(2) (2)I know you are holding a wolf by the ears.我知道你現(xiàn)在是進(jìn)退兩難。
(3) (3)The students were on tenterhooks before the examination.考試開始前,學(xué)生們心里七上八下的。
(4) (4)That politician acted like a buffoon during that debate.那個(gè)政客在那場(chǎng)辯論中真是丑態(tài)百出。
(5) (5)The film actress appeared in all her glory at the ball.這位女影星在舞會(huì)上真是儀態(tài)萬方。
(6) (6)The poor boy was on tenterhooks when his father was searching for a stick.見父親找棍子,那個(gè)可憐的男孩感到六神無主。
數(shù)字的語義模糊性是文學(xué)作品中不可回避的一個(gè)領(lǐng)域,翻譯無小事,數(shù)字翻譯更無小事,數(shù)字的準(zhǔn)確翻譯對(duì)整個(gè)文學(xué)作品的翻譯質(zhì)量是至關(guān)重要的,或者說如果數(shù)字翻譯處理不得當(dāng),可能會(huì)全盤皆輸。作為翻譯教師,在平日的翻譯教學(xué)中,也應(yīng)該加強(qiáng)對(duì)數(shù)字翻譯的專門講解,以引起廣大學(xué)生的高度重視,數(shù)字出現(xiàn)的場(chǎng)合要視文體語篇而論,有的文體語篇中出現(xiàn)得多,有的文體語篇中出現(xiàn)得不多,但是,無論出現(xiàn)得多與少,譯者都應(yīng)該貼切地翻譯好。而這都需要長(zhǎng)期的積累與思考,也需要對(duì)各種數(shù)字翻譯現(xiàn)象進(jìn)行不斷地歸納整理,形成一套較為完備的翻譯體系。
