Passage 1

We are always hearing about road accidents，and when we are in the car we should try to drive carefully. 1 A large hospital will tell you the number of accidents that happened in the home is almost the same as those on the road. I don’t pretend to be an expert，but I’ve thought a lot about how and why these accidents happen and what we can do to prevent them.

One of the most common and most dangerous causes at home accidents is wrong and careless use of electrical equipment. 2 Similarly，other people will pull out a plug without first turning off the power. Worse still，in spite of warning，one may carry an electric heater into the bathroom when he is going to have a bath. Sometimes one forgets to turn off the power when mending a lamp or something else. 3 So the rule about anything that works by electricity is：Switch off before you touch anything and don’t pretend you know when you actually don’t.

If you’ve got children in the house，it’s always best to keep medicines of any kind out of their reach. 4 When there are older people living with you，you have to take particular care in a number of ways in order to make them safe and happy.

Gas，of course，is always a risk. 5 Also，don’t forget to keep the children away from the cooker.

Safety first may mean a little more time and care，but it may save you a lot of trouble.

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. 1 His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants，and his goal is to find it and buy it； the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the shop assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock（庫存），the deal can be done and often is completed in less than five minutes，with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction.

For a man，slight problems may begin when the shop doesn’t have what he wants. 2 A good salesman brings out such a substitute skillfully，and he may say，“I know this jacket is not the style you want，Sir，but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you mentioned.”

3 The usual response is，“This is the right color and may be the right size，but I shouldnt’ be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”

For a woman，buying clothes is always done in the opposite way. 4 She has never fully decided what she wants，and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion，willing to try on any number of things. Deep in her mind is the thought of finding something that everybody thinks suits her. Most women have an excellent sense of value and are always on the look-out for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful dresses，a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another before selecting the dress she wants to try on. 5 Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.
