        【Abstract】English newspaper is a teaching material that can be constantly renewed. It can help improve students reading abilities and enhance students overall performance in English. In order to bring its functions into full play, the author cones up with teaching procedures for teachers to follow to make the class design scientific and benefit the students to the utmost.

        English newspaper teaching are becoming more and more popular in many colleges and universities, for newspaper teaching have various advantages such as encouraging different ways of thinking and activating students interest in English. Therefore, how to carry out the English newspaper class is very important.

        1. Procedures of the English newspaper class

        Different teachers have different procedures when they have the newspaper class. ?In order to achieve the best effect of the English newspaper class, teachers have to adjust their teaching methods and carry out the newspaper class in the following procedures.

        1.1 Step one: Choice of articles

        Most students like to read articles of medium length and medium difficulty. Teachers should choose articles according to students English level, and choose from the articles that both embody the characteristics of newspaper writings and include cultural differences.

        1.2 Step two: Lead-in

        Because students are not familiar with newspaper language and they have limited vocabulary, teachers use a lead-in process through which they give out relevant questions about the articles that they are going to study, and students think about the questions and have a discussion as a warm-up exercise. This process prepares the students forming an idea about the forthcoming article, which surely makes the article easier to approach and understand.

        1.3 Step three: General reading

        Teachers give students a limited time to go through the article. In order to finish reading in the fixed time, students have to speed up, and they have to skim and scan the article. This process trains students reading habits and reading speed. After this, teachers give out questions either in the form of true or false or in the form of multiple-choice. Teachers get the feedback of all these questions and explain the background knowledge to students. Students are not allowed to look up the dictionary this time.

        1.4 Step four: Careful reading

        Teachers give enough time to let students go over the article again. This time teachers assign the following tasks. Firstly, students underline the new words and expressions, and guess their meaning in the context. Secondly, students look for the words they have already known but have a different meaning in the article. Thirdly, students write down the commonly used sentences and classical ones. Fourthly, students write down their own views towards the article.endprint

        1.5 Step five: Discussion

        Teachers divide students into different groups according to their seats. Group members have a discussion about the whole article. And every group exchanges their answers and opinions.

        1.6 Step six: Teachers explanation

        Teachers explain relevant knowledge about newspaper writings, such as the structure of the article, the title, the lead, choice of words and so on.Generally speaking, the lead is composed of the topic of this piece of news and main facts. Students can get a general idea from the title and the lead. Teachers let students sum up the characteristics of newspaper language. Then teachers explain all the task questions to students, teach students how to analyze long and complicated sentences, and how to identify the meanings of new words. Most importantly, teachers tell students reading skills and build up their reading habits.

        English newspaper is a teaching material that can be constantly renewed. It can help improve students reading abilities and enhance students overall performance in English.
