一、人物介紹

蓓姬出生在一個貧困的家庭。他的父親是一個油畫老師，愛熏酒，在她很小的時候就死了。飽受貧困折磨，蓓姬一直渴望能大富大貴，混入上流社會。因此，她使盡渾身解數(shù)，吸引能實現(xiàn)她理想的富豪貴族的注意。她先是看中了羅登，一位有資格繼承他姑姑的大筆財產(chǎn)的人，并與之結(jié)婚?；楹?，她如愿以償?shù)叵硎艿搅松狭魃鐣氖孢m生活。但是揮霍完丈夫的家產(chǎn)之后，蓓姬又勾搭上了別的男人，并與丈夫離婚。最后，她又跟她朋友的哥哥走到了一起。為了滿足自己的物欲，她不斷地追尋對她有幫助的男人。

二、蓓姬性格中的閃光點

經(jīng)歷了不光彩的人生，蓓姬的性格也成為了大量學(xué)者批判的對象，她自私、虛偽、偷奸耍滑，但是，她身上仍然后值得現(xiàn)代人學(xué)習(xí)的閃光點。

（一）她是一個自立的孤兒

從小父母早死，生活艱難。正是這點造就了她以后擅長各種場合的交際。蓓姬的獨立，也是她擺脫清貧生活的主要動力。

On the one hand， Becky independently support her own living and education. “Rebecca was seventeen when she came to Chiswick， and was bound over as an articled pupil... and her privileges to live cost free， and with a few guineas a year.” （William Makepeace Thackeray， 2013） On the other hand， Becky is spiritually independent due to poverty. As Thackeray describing in the book， “by the side of many tall and bouncing young ladies in the establishment， Rebecca looked like a child. But she had the dismal precocity of poverty.”

蓓姬靠自己完成了自己的學(xué)業(yè)，有了屬于自己的生活。正如原文中所說：“Rebecca was seventeen when she came to Chiswick， and was bound over as an articled pupil... and her privileges to live cost free， and with a few guineas a year.” （William Makepeace Thackeray， 2013） 正是貧困，造就了蓓姬在精神上的獨立。正如薩克雷在原書中說道：“ by the side of many tall and bouncing young ladies in the establishment， Rebecca looked like a child. （二）她是一個充滿智慧的女人

讀者普遍認(rèn)為蓓姬是虛偽而圓滑的人。其實換個角度，她何嘗不是個智慧的女人呢？

最初，蓓姬擅長利用言語，幫助自己擺脫困境。她不但能勸服債主們寬限還債日期，她還能巧言贏得信任而吃飯賒賬。“Many a dun had she talked to， and returned away from her fathers door; many a tradesman had she coxed and wheedled into good-humour， and into the granting of one more meal.” （Thackeray， 2013） 事實上，蓓姬也是一個擅長抓住各種機會，學(xué)習(xí)新事物的人。比如，她因為鋼琴彈得好，被雇傭去當(dāng)家庭音樂教師。因此，蓓姬的確也是位勤奮好學(xué)，充滿智慧的女性。

（三）她是位精打細(xì)算的妻子

It cannot be denied that Becky makes efforts to improve her familys life equality more or less although the marriage between Becky and Rawdon comes to a bad ending.

蓓姬想盡辦法，幫助家人，改善家人的生活質(zhì)量。首先，她努力幫助丈夫羅登在上流社會贏得晉升機會。在巴黎生活期間，她也絞盡腦汁，為她丈夫在家族與社會上贏得一席之地。最后，她還想法幫助丈夫擺脫債務(wù)困擾。所以，蓓姬也算得上是個持家有道的好妻子。
