恰逢中華人民共和國建國70周年，在不久前參加的一場數(shù)字閱讀推廣活動中，我就《習(xí)近平談治國理政》一書的英文翻譯進(jìn)行了點(diǎn)評，特在此與讀者諸君品讀中文經(jīng)典，領(lǐng)悟翻譯之美。

眾所周知，政治文獻(xiàn)中，“精神”一詞頻繁出現(xiàn)，作為開篇，我們不妨一起考察該詞在不同語境中的不同譯法，期能激發(fā)討論，啟迪思考。

1. 原文：弘揚(yáng)“上海精神”，促進(jìn)共同發(fā)展

譯文：Carry Forward the “Shanghai Spirit” and Promote Common Development

點(diǎn)評：基本義項(xiàng)，往往中規(guī)中矩地傳譯即可?！读?xí)近平談治國理政》中類似表述還有：絲路精神，the Silk Road Spirit;創(chuàng)新精神，the spirit of innovation;時(shí)代精神，the spirit of the times;民族精神，the national spirit;中國精神，the Chinese spirit。

2. 原文：《習(xí)近平談治國理政》（第一卷、第二卷）是國內(nèi)外讀者學(xué)習(xí)掌握十九大精神的權(quán)威讀本。

譯文：They will be an authoritative source through which readers can learn about the guiding principles of the 19th CPC National Congress.

點(diǎn)評：“精神”在此顯然表示“宗旨、要義”等，譯作the guiding principles可謂深得原文要旨;而“國內(nèi)外讀者”在譯文中略為readers亦屬藝高人膽大，誠妙略也。

3. 原文：全黨全國就是要通過扎扎實(shí)實(shí)的努力，鍥而不舍把黨的十八大精神落到實(shí)處。

譯文：Now it is time for the whole Party and people of the whole country to make concerted and relentless efforts to implement the decisions of the 18th CPC National Congress.

點(diǎn)評：此處“精神”譯作decisions，貌似偏離，實(shí)質(zhì)忠實(shí)。此種靈活表達(dá)是初學(xué)翻譯者應(yīng)該留意掌握的技巧。漢語中的“扎扎實(shí)實(shí)”與“鍥而不舍”本來一定語一狀語，在譯文中統(tǒng)一而為并列定語，緊湊了句式，又無損原意。

第2例和第3例這種情況，國外也有譯作spirit的。根據(jù)《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》，spirit有義項(xiàng)為：the real or intended meaning or purpose of something。例如：Obey the spirit， not the letter of the law. 要依照法律的精神實(shí)質(zhì)，而不是字面意思。足見，當(dāng)我們強(qiáng)調(diào)領(lǐng)會某個(gè)重要文件的精神而不是字面意義時(shí)，完全可以考慮直接使用spirit。

“精神”一詞在漢語中意義豐富，搭配豐富，該詞除了上述這些最基本的語文意義，還有一些引申和比喻意義。如果說，語文意義翻譯起來按圖索驥，相對簡單，那么，比喻意義的翻譯通常會頗費(fèi)周章。

4. 原文：我們要有釘釘子精神，釘釘子往往不是一錘子就能釘好的，而是要一錘一錘接著敲，直到把釘子釘實(shí)釘牢，釘牢一顆再釘下一顆，不斷釘下去，必然大有成效。

譯文：In this regard， we need to have a “nail” spirit. When we use a hammer to drive in a nail， a single knock often may not be enough; we must keep knocking until it is well in place. Then we can proceed to the next one， and continued driving in nails till the job is completely done.

點(diǎn)評：“釘釘子精神”此處直譯，乍看英文，讀者或覺困惑，但繼續(xù)詳讀，其義自明。

5. 原文：我們要有“功成不必在我”的精神。

譯文：There is no use in saying， “I won’t get the credit for success.”

點(diǎn)評：此處采用“反譯”手法，虛化“精神”，倒也恰切。

6. 原文：精神懈怠危險(xiǎn)

譯文：the risk of inertia

點(diǎn)評：英文中inertia指a lack of energy and a feeling that you do not want to do anything，所以，英譯時(shí)“精神”一詞無須再現(xiàn)。

7. 原文：寶貴的精神財(cái)富

譯文：an invaluable source of inspiration

原文：發(fā)揮只爭朝夕的奮斗精神

譯文：with a sense of urgency

點(diǎn)評：翻譯學(xué)習(xí)者當(dāng)體會這種翻譯時(shí)的舍末逐本。

8. 原文：中國特色社會主義是億萬人民自己的事業(yè)，所以必須發(fā)揮人民主人翁精神，更好保證人民當(dāng)家作主。

譯文：Socialism with Chinese characteristics is a cause for the people in their hundreds of millions—this is why we must give full play to the role of the people as the masters of the country.

點(diǎn)評：“主人翁精神”在譯文中雖無顯性對應(yīng)，但細(xì)讀之后，卻發(fā)現(xiàn)譯文隱含其意。很多譯文需要這樣放開手腳，委婉達(dá)意;否則，糾結(jié)于字詞，只能是自討苦吃，甚或出力不討好。

最后，需要指明的是，任何字句的翻譯端賴語境，譯語措辭當(dāng)因地制宜，切忌一成不變地搬挪套用。

或曰：與“精神”經(jīng)常搭配的還有“精神文明”，此文何以只字未提？篇幅原因，我們將在下次討論“文明”一詞的英譯時(shí)，詳加剖析。? ? ? ? ? ? ?□
