        An English Teaching Description in China—on English Reading Online course

        一、Introduction

        A demo lesson may include 9 parts.They’re analysis of the course,the teaching and reading materials,analysis of learners,identifying the teaching aims,key and difficult points,teaching methods,the guidance of learning method,teaching procedures,and blackboard design.All of those analyses are based on a course named English Reading Online,this course requires the second language learner learn English by reading on the Internet.

        二、A demonstration of an English Class

        (一)Analysis of the course

        With the aim to improve student’s integral language competence,English reading is a compulsory course for English major students.Under the notion of how to develop students’ reading skills and to improve students reading proficiency,the course English Reading Online comes into being.For a traditional English reading class,we have specific textbooks or some reading materials for reference .But we have no materials at all for this course.In fact,there are enormous reading contents on the Internet,and those reading materials are really a feast for our eyes.So how to choose those reading contents and how to help Ss to read them effectively is much more important than those pure reading skills.As for the scope of our reading,it is very broad the topics can be related to people,politics,economy,culture,education,sports,and the earth and so on.

        (二)Analysis of teaching and reading materials

        As for the teaching and reading materials,it depends on the purpose of the course,and all the materials are collected by the teacher from the Internet.And the teacher will provide the topic-related websites to the students and guide them to read in and after the class.The teaching contents consist of 9 parts.

        1.A general introduction of the popular websites(week 1)

        2.Autobiography/People/Celebrity and their lives (week 3)

        3.Politics and Military (week 5)

        4.Education and Technology(week 7)

        5.Nature and Animals (week 9)

        6.Economy and Business(week 11)

        7.Culture and literature(week 13)

        8.Sports and Arts (week 15)

        9.Health and Travelling(week 17)

        For each topic,we have topic-related websites for reference.In order to make it clearly,we will take Nature and Animals,a topic that we should learn within 100 minutes,as an example to illustrate later.

        (三)Analysis of learners

        There are 65 students from class 1 and class 2 in grade 2.After one-year professional and systematic training in English,they have are familiar with English classes in the college,and they have comparatively rich experience in reading in English.So it’s easy for them to read a passage in English and to have a discussion on some topics that they are interested in.But they may poor in the new words and phrases connected with some certain topics,but they are interested in the class and they are willing to participate.

        (四)Analysis of the teaching aims

        Knowledge aims:

        1.Know more about nature,animals,ecology and the environment.

        2.Make the Ss know the Earth Summit and the importance of the environment.

        3.Further develop students’ reading ability as well as listening ability

        4.Make the Ss learn some useful words and expressions related to nature and animals.

        5.Arouse the Ss to take better care of the earth.

        Ability aims:

        To develop the students’ 4 basic skills,especially reading skills.Through practicing students’ predicting,skimming,scanning and concluding skills to improve their reading ability.At the same time,to encourage students to express their own opinions and cooperate with others by reading and joining in the activities.

        Emotional aim:

        1.To build Ss’ senses of good co-operation and care of our earth.

        2.To lead Ss to show their loveliness to the poor.

        (五)Key and difficult points

        Key points:

        1.How to get the students to mater the words,expression and use them flexibly,and on this basis to have a better understanding of the passage.

        2.How to Get Ss familiarize with the writing style and make them retell the whole text.

        Difficult points:

        1.How to make the students understand the text better by using the proper reading strategies.

        2.How to enable the students to master the reading skills and improve their reading ability.

        (六)Teaching methods

        As we all know,Einstein once said that interest is the best teacher,so we will try to interest the students throughout my teaching to realize my teaching aims.We will make every effort to carry out task-based teaching and inquiry teaching.While teaching,task-driving method is always employed and the way of analysis and explanation will be used when necessary.And the last method is filling method,which means my students should save all the reading notes they have taken in a file pocket in order to make teacher know better about their reading process.

        (七)The guidance of learning method

        It is widely accepted that teaching students to fish is better than giving them fish.A German education expert once said: “The art of teaching is not imparting knowledge,but in motivating,recalling,and encouraging.Apart from teaching method,the learning method is also very important.According to the curriculum,to develop students’ cooperation spirit and self-learning ability has become a new teaching way of transformation.So we should not only arouse students to question,explore,and learn in practice but also encourage students to search all the information they need online and guide them to read actively,willingly,happily and creatively under the guidance of teachers.

        (八)Teaching procedures

        After one-year studying,my students have had basic abilities of listening,speaking,reading and writing,but their abilities of using English to process information and solve problems are still need to be improved.The new teaching requirements advocate the students are the main body of learning,so in this class we will focus on students’ reading skills,problem-solving and self-learning ability.We believe students’ reading abilities can be improved through learning by doing.

        Step1 Lead -in

        The teacher will create situations to introduce the topic of this period.

        Step2 Warming up and Pre-reading

        “Interest is the best teacher”,therefore,at the very beginning of the class,we should spark the students’ focus on the centre topic “Nature,Animal”,and we will provide some pictures of nature and animals to attract their attention and then using questions to arouse the students’ interest of knowing more about the topic.

        Step3 Reading and Comprehending

        Before reading,we will provide my students with many website related to the topic.And then the teacher will ask students to visit those websites one by one and then to choose at least three websites to read.At the same time,they should take down some important information that includes words,phrases,sentences and their enlightenments and opinions about the problem or phenomenon.

        In the process of reading,they should pay attention to the reading skills.

        There are three parts of this step.

        1.Skimming

        Skim the title and the first or the last sentence of each paragraph,and then answer some questions or ask them try to summarize the main meaning of the passage.

        2.Scanning

        Scan the passage,try to get general ideas and detailed information of it.

        3.Detail-reading

        Dealing with some difficult questions and learn some language points.For this part,it can be a period of problems solving.Time belongs to students and in the most of time I just play an assistant role.The students can ask any questions they come across in the process of reading.And the teaching purpose here is to improve their questioning spirit and dealing with difficulties.

        Step4 Discussion

        Discussion is not always has in the class,but depends on the topic.

        Step5 Homework

        a.Try to remember the important language points and sentences on their note books.

        b.Surf the internet and read more according to the website list that I provide.

        c.Find out more information about the topic by themselves.

        (九)Blackboard design

        Blackboard design should be thought for a thing that attract the student’s attention and let them to write down the important teaching points.We usually divide the blackboard into two parts.For this course,the left part will be used to write the important websites that they should visit in the class.It will be reserved for the whole class.The right part will be precious explanation,the teacher can write some sentence of the words,phrases and structures if the teacher need explain their meaning.

        三、Conclusions

        In the whole reading process,the course would be focus on students’ long-term development and enable them to search many useful reading resources online,to use proper reading skills and strategies.In other words,students are guided to read efficiently and independently online.Strategy and approach will help students become more independent and the successful learner.A teacher in the class just plays an assistant role in the class.For this course,the teacher’s job is mainly about searching and providing all the helpful websites,materials and information for the students before and after the class.
