        Step Ⅱ: Task 5

It is a tendency that we are using less and less currencies, esp.among young people. But there are so many interesting things about currency that you may want to know.Let’s go find out.

1.Students read the questions before listening.

1)How many denominations are printed in the US money and what are they?

        There are 10 denominations,namely $10,000,$5,000,$1,000,$500,$100,$50,$20,$10,$5 and $1.

2)What are the features shared by all paper bills?

They are the same size and the same green color.

3)What is the best bet to deal with different denominations?

The best bet is to forget the pictures and concentrate on the large numbers in all four corners on the front and back.

2.Students listen to the audio and answer the questions.

3.Students listen to the audio again and complete the sentences.

1)You’ll find a picture of George Washington on the $1 bill,Abraham Lincoln on the $5,Alexander Hamilton on the $10 and Andrew Jackson on the $20.

        2)Money in general is referred to as:cash,bucks,dough,bread,moolah,greenbacks,etc.A one-dollar bill is most often called “a dollar”,“a single”,“a buck”,or “a bill”;a five-dollar bill is “five dollars”,“a fiver”,“a five spot” or “five bucks”.Five singles make five dollars.A ten-dollar may be “a ten”,“ten bucks”,or a “ten spot”.

        3)Coins come in the following denominations:$.01 or 1 cent,$.05 or 5 cents,$.25 or 25 cents,and $.50 or 50 cents.They are referred respectively to a penny,a cent,or one cent;a nickel or five cents;a dime or ten cents;a quarter,two bits or twenty-five cents;and a fifty-cent piece.

        Step Ⅲ:Task 9

Just now we talked about US currencies, and now let’s move on to the currencies in the UK.

1.Students read the chart before listening to the audio.

        2)There were 12 pence in a shilling.

3)The smallest coin is the 1 penny.

4)The new 10 pence has the same value as the “two shillings” coin.

6)The British have had decimal currency since 1971.

7)The making of 1/2 pence was stopped in 1984.
