【Abstract】:Divination has been used widely in agriculture、war and other aspects since the Shang Dynasty[1], which can be proved by discovered oracle bones. Then, the King Wen of Zhou wrote 《The book of changes》 that is almost all the origin of various existed divination theory. Taoist philosophy was founded by LaoTzu during the spring and Autumn period, and undergone some stages of inheritance, improvement and development. Taoism regards Tao as the highest category of theory. Tao is the origin of all things in the world. LaoTzu thinks there is no God, but everything have objective connections, natural rules, and called “Wu”. “Wu” is also “Dao” that literal meaning is the way or path. So the Taoist practitioners try to predict the things’ change during its development along the \"Wu\" (\"Dao\"). These predictions can be said to be the practice of divination in various forms, including Liu Yao and other forms. So divination contains rich Taoism’s idea. The hexagram divination is also called Najia divination, which is a predicted method based studies of the Book of Changes.

The hexagram divination production
the hexagram is a predicted method for people to answer something concrete. It was established by JingFang, which still used milfoil in that time. And then fortuneteller used three copper cashes to get a hexagram or used other easier method. Then fortuneteller will analysis the Divinatory Symbols to give a answer to questioner.
1.2 About the theories of hexagram divination
yin-yang theory
The yin-yang theory derived in Xia Dynasty by people who observe natural phenomena and fight against nature, finally they sum up experience[5]. It deem there are yin and yang two aspects for all things that include matter and spirit in the world. And the two aspects are the unity of opposites.
The Five-elements theory
The Five-elements theory is the epistemology for world by Chinese ancestors. They think the world composed of five basic matter which is metal、wood、water、fire and earth. The five elements interact each other and form the world.

The Eight Diagrams are the base of Zhouyi divination. Individual diagram(Gua) is stood for three lines(爻), which Yang-line is represented “—” while Yin-line is represented “--”.And every two individual eight-diagram randomly assemble to form 64 hexagrams which have its unique name and illustrate thing’s development
2.Taoism thought and hexagram divination:
The word “Taoism” have two meaning that is Taoist school and the religion of Taoism in English. The different between these have mentioned above preface. I will briefly demonstrate these respectively, which have ultimate relationship and influenced Chinese culture including hexagram divination. Or in other words, these are a part of Chinese culture.
Taoist school and hexagram divination
the view of 《Laozi》’s “Wu”
The view of Wu is a philosophical category of Taoist school, which literal meaning is not exist or chaos.
·the view of Unity of opposites between Wu and You
Literally, Wu is Non-existent and You is existence, LaoZtu think that the existence is based on Non-existent and support each other. So the fortuneteller accord to the unseen world inspire to solve the real world trouble. Unseen world always connect with real world by some ways such divination.
·the view of change
Taoism believe the changes is existence every hour and moment. In hexagram divination, fortuneteller explain the diagram with the view of changes.
·the view of the image connect with real things
As we know, we predict something by known information to deduce unknown information. In science research, we have formulas to deduce but in Chinese ancient time, people hadn’t any rigorous formula like today while they have some unique formulas themselves, which is deduction program but very subjective.
·the idea of harmony between man and nature
LaoTzu think that the man rely on earth to live, the earth rely on the heaven change to turn to the four season, the heaven rely on the Dao to work, the Dao is existence naturally. So the man and nature are harmonious[2]. We can get some information from the diagram to predict something.
·the idea of Do nothing and everything is done
LaoTzu think one should pursue one’s individual, but which should obey the natural law and abandon objective casual action. That is that do nothing. If so, you will achieve your goal. And that is that everything is done. Likewise, the hexagram divination is a inspire come from nature and it is nature itself. But we can use our action to get the inspire to change the bad direction to good direction.
3. The hexagram divination’s Position and Meaning in Contemporary
3.1 Situation:
As a knowledge to rationalize
The divination regarded as a feudal superstition in the past time, however, they want to rationalize itself in the science time and atheism country, which is normal. They always claim it is a knowledge about Chinese traditional culture come from Zhou yi. As a reasonable institution to rationalize
The fortunetellers found some researching institutions to standardize the industry. I think it help the divination more reasonable to exist to some degree.
As a reasonable motivation to rationalize
They believe they aren’t divination but a social mentality consultation, which they just help the people analysis the trouble and accord their knowledge to judge a good way to solve the trouble.
3.2 meaning:
I just want to the individual perspective to present my opinion. Just as a great fortuneteller saying that a really successful and responsible fortuneteller should predict rightly one’s fate and teach the way to change the fate for one, and they must transmit the positive and active attitude for life to one who has trouble. [9]Fortuneteller should pursue the high and accurate technology and to be a responsible consultant and instructor. To change the sad one to a happy one、the decadent one to active one and the extreme one to peaceful one, that is real responsibility for fortuneteller. I can’t agree more.
4.Conclusion:
To summarize, the hexagram divination contain rich Taoism idea, which also exist Chinese thought from ancient time to today so that the divination can generational growth and prosperity forever in China. Such as Unity of opposites between Wu and You, the image connect with real things, the idea of harmony between man and nature, Do nothing and everything is done, just as above has been mentioned. Nowadays, science has dominated all the world, also we should have a right attitude to the divination. To some extent, it is sure that can give some people some comfort, if who are in trouble and believe it firmly. Also it is one part of Chinese tradition culture, we should know it objectively.
