more than

1. more than用于數(shù)詞之前，意為“超過；不止；以上”，相當于over。

例1Altogether more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet is covered by water.我們這個星球的表面總共有 70% 以上的部分都被水覆蓋。

2. 當用于形容詞、副詞前時，意為“非常；十分”，與 very 同義。

例2Id be more than happy to sit down and discuss this with you.若能坐下來跟你討論一下這事，我會非常高興。

例3She is more than careful in doing things.她做事非常細心。

3. 也可用于名詞之前，意為“不只是；不僅僅是”。

例4Hibernation is more than sleep.冬眠不僅僅是睡眠。

例5Bamboo is used for more than building.竹子不只是用于建筑。

1. 用于比較句型。

例6He possesses more English books than Chinese books.他的英語書多于中文書。

2. 意為 “與其……不如……”“是……而不是……”。

例7She is more timid than cautious. 與其說她謹慎，不如說她膽怯。

例8It had more the appearance of a deliberate crime than of an accident.這件事表面上看起來更像是故意犯罪，而不是事故。

no more than

not any more than

兩者都意為“只有；僅僅；不過”， no more than多用于書面語，not any more than則常用于口語。

例9Abraham Lincolns whole school education added up to no more than one year.亞伯拉罕·林肯所接受的全部學校教育總共不過一年的時間。

例10He is not any more than a worker.他不過是個工人。

not more than

not more than 用于數(shù)詞之前，意為“至多；頂多；不超過”，相當于at (the) most。

例11On some hay on the ground lay a peasant boy of not more than seventeen.地面的干草上躺著一個農(nóng)家孩子，最多不過 17 歲。

no more ... than

意為“不比……更……；與……同樣不”，對前后都是否定的，常用來加重說話的語氣。

例12Mary is no more diligent than Tom.瑪麗和湯姆一樣都不勤奮。

not more...than

not more ... than 意為“不如……；不及……”，可與“not so/as...as”互換。應注意其與no more ... than的區(qū)別。

例13This story is not more interesting than that one. / This story is not so/as interesting as that one.

這個故事不如那個故事有趣。
