Everybody knows that Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year. The day is a national holiday for giving thanks to God. But do you know how Thanksgiving happened?
In 1620, a hundred English people wanted to start a new life. They left England for the new world in a small ship. The ship’s name was Mayflower. But half of them died of hunger, cold or illness. The other half lived through the terrible winter. As spring came, their life became easier. And the native Indians gave them a lot of help. So when they got in a good harvest the next autumn, they had a good celebration to remember the dead and to give thanks to God. They asked their Indian friends to join them in a big dinner with wild turkeys, geese, ducks and pumpkin. This was the first Thanksgiving celebration. It was held on December 13th, 1621.
