“Hello, dear friends, I’m delighted to share my experiences as a senior student in this class and join the newcomers in exploring ‘China for Generation Z’.”
I am from Turkmenistan, and 2024 was my eighth year studying in China. The opening quote is from a speech I made during our summer social practice program. Following my speech, many praised my proficiency in Chinese, a skill I owe largely to my teachers and classmates. Without their support, I could not have achieved such mastery of the language. Now, I would like to share the journey of my educational experience in China starting from my initial days of learning Chinese.
A Warm Welcome
When I first arrived in China in 2017, I couldn’t understand a word of Chinese. The language barrier made me feel a bit worried about living here. Like many international students, I was intimidated by Chinese, regarded as one of the world’s most difficult languages to learn. At that time, I worried about currency exchange and shopping, worried about coursework and learning results, and worried about visa issues and communication barriers. However, China proved to be incredibly welcoming and the Chinese people exceptionally warm. On the streets, I encountered bilingual (Chinese-English) and even trilingual (Chinese-English-Russian) signs. At school, the high-speed internet provided access to a wealth of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) worldwide. And in restaurants, the diverse cuisine reminded me of home. I was amazed at how inclusive this vast country is. It is certainly a pleasant place to live. On my first day of Chinese class, I learned the saying: “It is a pleasure to meet a friend from afar,” a perfect encapsulation of Chinese hospitality. My teachers were dedicated and patient, imparting their knowledge of Chinese language and culture. My advisors were supportive and attentive, making me feel valued and cared for. And my classmates were friendly and helpful, fostering a sense of belonging in this new environment. With consistent effort, my Chinese improved significantly, and I was even able to assist other international students with their studies and daily life.
High-end Technologies
At Northwestern Polytechnical University, I was fortunate to study aeronautical engineering, one of the school’s most prestigious programs. Our professors introduced us to cutting-edge knowledge in aviation and artificial intelligence. I found it particularly exciting to learn how to use computer software to calculate aircraft loads, and my professor was thrilled to see his students develop a passion for the subject. In the laboratory, countless experiments could be tedious, but adjusting the Reynolds number while conducting wind tunnel tests proved exciting. Exploring the airflow field in a flight environment deepened my appreciation for the advanced technology driving China’s competitive aviation industry. At the science museum, I was fascinated by the lifelike bionic birds, eels and guide dogs that demonstrated the potential of technology to change the world. Through a powerful telescope, I got my first clear view of the moon. Aware of my plan to design a small model aircraft for our team, teachers and students invited me to attend numerous academic presentations and technology lectures. With my goal of becoming an outstanding aeronautical engineer, the school provided me with a comprehensive academic plan and career counseling. In August 2023, I had the honor of participating in the World Military UAV Competition in Egypt with students from around the globe. Watching our self-designed drones soar through the sky was akin to seeing my dream take flight. I am deeply grateful for China’s strong technological advancements and hope to contribute to its continued success.
The Charm of Chinese Culture
As the Chinese saying goes, “It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books.” During my education in China, I cherished every opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. Those experiences not only allowed me to meet people from all over the world, expanding my horizons and strengthening my character, but also provided me with a firsthand understanding of Chinese traditions and culture. Beneath the ancient city walls of Xi’an, we absorbed tales of the Tang Dynasty and hummed folk tunes accompanied by the pipa. The blending of motion and stillness, and the past and the present, seemed to transport me back to ancient China. In the vast Gobi Desert near Dunhuang, we raced electric vehicles past the Mogao Caves, leaving tire tracks in the sand amid the sunset. This interplay of speed and serenity captured the cultural charm of China that I had been seeking.
Singing along to “Welcome to Beijing”, we arrived in the city that played host to two Olympic Games. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven unfolded before us like an encyclopedia of Chinese history. The unique architecture of the Bird’s Nest and the beautiful design of the Olympic Village helped narrate the story of China’s journey toward modernization. It was a vision of China’s style that I had always imagined. I felt so fortunate to have fallen in love with its remarkable culture.
Just a few days ago, I received my first job offer from a Chinese company. I was so excited that I immediately emailed my university teachers to express my gratitude. I am eager to record my personal stories and believe that many people are having a similar beautiful experience in China.
