GAO Yitao, the founder and chief architect of Interval Architects, talked about his understanding of regional issues through two architectural practices in two different geographical spaces, one in the north and another in the south.He believes that maintaining a comparative observation and sensibility about different regions, environments, and local customs will promote considerations for design strategies in different sites and lifestyles. Aiming at the local issue of the sandstorm, the design of Raffles Kindergarten Complex located in the province Hebei except using the traditional“corridor “ that only for traffic purpose, but transforming it into an indoor activity and teaching space to fit in the local lifestyle and climate fully. House G is a self-owned house in a suburban village two hours away from Shanghai. The design returns to nature and combines with the form of a linear pitched-roof volume that naturally blends in the context, with its overhanging horizontal roof deriving from the traditional vernacular architecture in Southern China. The operation of“grey space” fulfills the owner’s rural life needs.
