多本漢英詞典列出了“學(xué)歷”的幾種英譯（education status、educational background、resume of ones education、schooling record、record of formal schooling、 academic qualification、academic credentials），可是英漢詞典里卻沒有一個可與“學(xué)歷”對得上的詞條，可見“學(xué)歷”是中國特有的一個概念。

美國有很多專門賺錢騙人的野雞大學(xué)（bogus colleges; diploma mills），不少名字挺嚇唬人，如American National University、American Central University、American Global University、American South International University、Central State University of New York等。要取得這些學(xué)校的文憑（diploma，舊稱parchment，也就是學(xué)位證書diploma of academic degrees）很容易，不需要上課就可得到成績單等選課的證明文件，只要交一篇論文就能拿到學(xué)位，而且論文可以用中文寫，會有人幫你翻譯。不少野雞大學(xué)出售各種文憑，有的甚至明碼標(biāo)價（openly list prices），有的學(xué)校的“博士學(xué)位證書”只要2585美元即可搞定（get it settled）。

野雞大學(xué)之所以有生意，是因為學(xué)歷造假（fabrication of academic credentials）和我們這個學(xué)歷社會有關(guān)（a society where a diploma is of paramount importance; a society obsessed with academic degrees）。找工作首先要看學(xué)歷，實際本事反倒排到了第二位。“唯文憑主義”（diploma above everything else）帶來的另一個苦果是，不管條件是否成熟，各大學(xué)爭著招收研究生，因而許多“博士不博”，名不副實（many doctorate holders are not worthy of their academic degrees），說得好聽點是“含金量降低”（with much lower gold content，意為without much real worth），也就是學(xué)位貶值（devaluation of academic degrees），因此生產(chǎn)出了大量“注水文憑”（diluted diploma，往豬肉里注水是inject water into pork），除了增長人們的虛榮心（vanity）之外，對社會沒有任何好處。

有人諷刺現(xiàn)在的大學(xué)說：“教授越來越多，教書的越來越少;博士越來越多，博學(xué)的越來越少;戀愛的越來越多，戀學(xué)的越來越少;鉆營的越來越多，鉆研的越來越少?！保═here are more professors but fewer of them really teach; there are more doctors but fewer of them are really learned; there are more people in universities engaging themselves in courting and love affairs rather than in studying; and there are more people good at seeking personal gains rather than at gaining professional proficiencies.）

還有一個現(xiàn)象，一些人當(dāng)了官，還要給自己再戴上一頂“博士”的帽子，名片上有個“博士”頭銜，臉上也有了光彩（gain good face），被人諷刺為“仕而優(yōu)則學(xué)”（high officials apt to assume academic titles to themselves），不是“學(xué)而優(yōu)則仕”（a good scholar will make a good official）。

要徹底解決這一問題，用人制度（system of employment）須有所改革，更需要社會觀念的改變。

2010年在網(wǎng)上走紅（a hit on the internet）的“學(xué)歷姐”和“學(xué)歷哥”的故事曾引起了很大爭議。“學(xué)歷姐”指華中師大的研究生王麗，她竟然在16年里取得了7個高等院校文憑，包括3個?？疲╦unior college）、3個本科（undergraduate）和1個碩士文憑。她說，如果有機會，她還要爭取拿博士學(xué)位?！皩W(xué)歷哥”指南京航空航天大學(xué)54歲的博士生導(dǎo)師朱進東教授，他于2010年考入南京大學(xué)，再度成為博士生。在絕大多數(shù)人為了功利（fame and wealth; official position and material gain）而攻讀學(xué)位甚至造假學(xué)歷的情況下，他們追求自我完善（self-perfection）的做法為許多人所不理解。其實，在西方，上大學(xué)攻讀學(xué)位的中年人屢見不鮮（very common），還有許多人退休后攻讀學(xué)位，年齡最大的一位女士90多歲才拿到博士學(xué)位，所有人都向她表示祝賀。這值得我們對教育觀、人才觀進行反思（reflect over our views on education and talents）。
