歐內(nèi)斯特·海明威(Earnest Hemingway)(1899-1961)，美國作家、記者，以其獨(dú)特的寫作風(fēng)格著稱，被認(rèn)為是20世紀(jì)最著名的小說家之一。他擅長用最簡單的詞匯表達(dá)最復(fù)雜的內(nèi)容，即“冰山理論”——只表現(xiàn)事物的八分之一，使其作品充實(shí)、含蓄、耐人尋味。

閱讀立意

The fish was coming in on his circle now calm and beautiful looking and only his great tail moving.The old man pulled on him all that he could to bring him closer.For just a moment,the fish turned a little on his side.Then hestraightenedhimself and began another circle.

“I moved him,” the old man said,“I moved him then.”

He felt faint（昏眩）again now，but he held on the great fish all the strain （拉力）that he could.I moved him,he thought.Maybe this time I can get him over.Pull,hands,he thought.Hold up,legs.Last for me,head.Last for me.You never went.This time I’ll pull him over.

But when he put all of his effort on,starting it well out before the fish came alongside and pulling with all hisstrength,the fish pulled part way over and then righted himself and swam away.

“Fish,” the old man said，“Fish,you are going to have to die anyway.Do you have to kill me too?”

That way nothing is accomplished,he thought.His mouth was too dry to speak but he could not reach for the water now.I must get him alongside this time,he thought.I am not good for many more turns.Yes you are,he told himself.You're good for ever.

On the next turn,he nearly had him.But again the fish righted himself and swam slowly away.

You are killing me,fish,the old man thought.But you have a right to.Never have I seen a greater,or more beautiful,or a calmer or more noble thing than you,brother.Come on and kill me.I do not care who kills who.

Now you are getting confused in the head,he thought.You must keep your head clear.Keep your head clear and know how to suffer like a man,or a fish,he thought.

“Clear up,head,” he said in a voice he could hardly hear，“Clear up.”

Twice more it was the same on the turns.

I do notknow,the old man thought.He had been on the point of feeling himself go each time.I do not know.But I will try it once more.

He tried it once more and he felt himself going when he turned the fish.The fish righted himself and swam off again slowly with the great tail weaving(迂回行進(jìn)）in the air.

I’ll try it again,the old man promised,although his hands were mushy（血肉模糊的）now and he could only see well in flashes.

He tried it again and it was the same.So he thought,and he felt himself going before he started;I will try it once again.

Iceberg theory，an art of omission

冰山理論：“留白”的藝術(shù)

The iceberg theory，sometimes also known as the “theory of omission”，is a style of writing coined by American writer Ernest Hemingway.Hemingway believed the deeper meaning of a story should not be evident on the surface,but should shine through implicitly（隱含地）.If a writer knows enough about what he is writing about,he may omit things that will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them.A good writer does not need to reveal every detail of a character or action.

冰山理論，有時(shí)也被稱為“省略理論”，是美國作家歐內(nèi)斯特·海明威創(chuàng)造的一種寫作風(fēng)格。海明威認(rèn)為，一個(gè)故事的深層意義不應(yīng)從表面上顯現(xiàn)出來，而應(yīng)隱晦地體現(xiàn)出來。如果一個(gè)作家對他所寫的東西有足夠的了解，他可能會(huì)忽略那些對這些事情有強(qiáng)烈感覺的東西，就像作者已經(jīng)說過了一樣。一個(gè)好的作家不需要透露一個(gè)人物或一種行為的每一個(gè)細(xì)節(jié)。
