        Strategies for Integrating Traditional Culture into the Teaching of College English Writing

        【Abstract】This paper puts forward the strategies of integrating traditional culture into college English writing teaching, aiming to improve the quality of college English teaching, enhance the cross-cultural communication ability of college students, and cultivate their national cultural awareness.

        1. Improving the Diversity of Teaching Methods

        The college English writing teaching has problems such as the test-based teaching and the lack of class time. The writing course is usually for teachers to explain writing skills, writing sentence patterns and excellent writing articles, and finally to arrange writing exercises for students. This teaching method neglects the students writing process and lacks targeted corrections to students writing errors, which makes the students writing practice less effective. Therefore, teachers should improve their teaching quality, innovate teaching methods, and enhance the penetration of traditional culture in writing teaching, such as implantation, infiltration, contrast, discussion, etc., to increase the flexibility and interest of the classroom. The implantation method of English writing teaching refers to hiding traditional cultural knowledge in the teaching content according to the teaching objectives. For example, the teacher can guide students to choose their favorite storyline by introducing the English translation of the titles of the four famous Chinese classics and require them to describe it in English. In addition, teachers can also assign homework such as transcription, dictation and translation to students, and integrate traditional cultural knowledge into their homework to gradually improve their writing ability.

        2. Breaking Through the Traditional Three-paragraph Writing Mode

        For a long time, exam-oriented education has led to a serious patterning of English writing teaching, which manifests itself in the following aspects: students writing is mainly composed of three paragraphs, fixed sentence structures, fixed synonym replacement methods and so on. In order to promote the students to obtain the grade certificate as soon as possible, the teacher continuously repeats the procedural training in the teaching process, urging the students to write with the template, which leads to the students written articles are very rigid and boring. Teachers should pay attention to the integration of traditional cultural content in writing teaching, and guide students to conceive their themes according to their own cultural knowledge. The teacher can advise students to introduce Chinese traditional festivals, the ideological spirit of the sages, and Chinese interests and arts in English. For example, teachers can introduce the theme of “A Bite of China” that students are more interested in. Students often have a strong interest in food, and they can actively participate in learning and learn to introduce their favorite hometown foods in English, such as sweet pork strips, noodles with soy bean paste and so on.

        3. Designing Various Cultural Activities

        China has thousands of years of civilization history, and the extensive and profound national culture has also attracted the attention of the people of the world. If people rely solely on classroom explanations, it is difficult to integrate the essence of these cultures into English teaching. Therefore, English teachers can use various cultural activities to enrich students extracurricular life, expand their horizons, cultivate their cultural sentiment and literacy, and strengthen their communication and interaction. This will enable them to experience and appreciate the essence of traditional culture in various activities, to understand the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western cultures, and to deepen their understanding of culture. It is also possible to conduct an English speech contest with the theme of Chinese traditional culture to further enhance students understanding of Chinese national culture. These activities can not only satisfy the curiosity of college students, but also help them find the way of cultural output, improve their participation, mobilize their enthusiasm and creativity, and fundamentally avoid and eliminate some cultural common sense errors.
