Conceptual contiguity is a key property of metonymy. From the rhetorical study in Aristotle’s time to cognitive linguistics in the 21thcentury, studies of contiguity in metonymy have developed from an objectivist view to a conceptualist view. This paper points out that a variety of factors lead to the contiguous juxtaposition of the two conceptual domains in metonymy, thus making metonymy rich and complicated. Since metonymy is a basic way to conceptualize the world and to communicate, explorations into contiguity should take into consideration the general embodied cognition principles, the communicative principles and strategies. Moreover, metonymy is socioculturally situated conceptualization, so contiguity should be explored from the perspective of cognitive sociolinguistics.

Rhetorical criticism is one of the important concepts of Western Rhetoric, which can be applied in all of rhetorical behaviors. Based on rhetorical criticism and introducing some parameters from Western Rhetoric, this study builds the Critical Metaphor Analysis, investigates four kinds of metaphors in M&A discourse with it, and summarizes features of each metaphors. The findings show that, first, the metaphors in M&A discourse imply writers’ ideology and rhetorical motivation; second, writers’ final goals of using metaphor is to persuade readers and to make something in common between readers and them.

The British contemporary writer Ian McEwan is concerned with the tracing of the origin of the personal trauma in the socio-historical and cultural context. The trauma delineation refers to sexual trauma, familial relation, war trauma and the collective horror after the “9·11”terrorist attack，from which emerges the typical “traumatological” cultural syndrome. This paper tends to scrutinize the progression of McEwan’s trauma writing under the perspective of cultural traumatology, to expose how personal traumatic experience gets enlarged and envisioned under the multiple impacts from family, society and history, and further disclose McEwan’s retrospection of human beings’ living dilemma and sympathy for the unrelieved psychological trauma.

Critique of everyday life is one of the important themes in Willa Cather’sTheProfessor’sHouse. The novel, with St. Peter’s everyday life as its narrative thread, debunks the negative effects exerted by Enlightenment modernity upon human beings’ everyday life. In the novel, alienation is the morbid symptom of everyday life, and modern men nourished by modern life are “one-dimensional men” who constitute the landscape of everyday life. Cather, apart from criticizing these phenomena, advocates the aestheticization of everyday life, so as to restore its richness, relieve alienation that has permeated in everyday life and rescue modern men who are subjugated to instrumental reason. Cather’s critique of everyday life questions the discourse of Enlightenment modernity that admires “reason” and “progress”, and her artistic conception of redeeming everyday life reflects the function of aesthetic redemption assumed by artistic works. Thus, the novel is endowed with profound social critical awareness and humanistic concern.

Landscape is not only the geometry space of a drama, but also the important representation medium of drama’s themes. This paper, by analyzing the signi-ficance and influences that the landscapes, the very visual images of contemporary capitalist production mode, presumably exert on social relationship, family relationship and man-human relationship in particular, centers on interpreting the essential reasons leading to Willy’s survival dilemmas and thus disclosing the tragic dimensions that landscapes contain in an attempt to trigger people’s deepthinking on the present-day’s landscape society, with the leg-up given by the theories of literary geography and Eco-cultural thoughts.

This empirical study focuses on the interpreter’s verbal and non-verbal action of Chinese Herbal Shop in the UK. The paper investigates how the interpreter and the doctor build, negotiate and compete for their authoritative status through various language forms in doctor-patient interaction. We find the Chinese traditional medical interpreting has a rather complicated communicative mode. The doctor and the interpreter cooperate, compete for and construct their respective professional authority through various semantic interactions.

Based on the construction of Chinese-English parallel corpus, this paper conducts a study on the English translation of the characteristic words loaded with grassland culture. The process is to collect authoritative and representative corpus, use Tmxmall corpus alignment processing online system to process and mark the corpus, use AntConc software to search the corpus, and to quantify the source language and target language. The construction of the Chinese-English parallel corpus of the characteristic words of grassland culture can help translators to obtain rich translation information in an instant way, to provide some reference for future translation and research, and to improve the translation quality and achieve the unification of translated terms.

Utilizing the model of comparing parallel texts, this paper analyzes the differences of English and Chinese on-line bank introductions in both content and approaches of expression. This study reveals problems in present Chinese on-line bank introduction translation and some significant implications in translating corporate publicities. Based on the findings of this study, some flexible translation strategies, such as compiling and rewriting, diversified expressions and the adoption of more proper media should be used as guidelines in translating Chinese on-line bank introductions. The translation strategies proposed in this paper take the readers of the target language and the acceptance of the translation into full consideration and will facilitate the communication of Chinese culture and Chinese corporate publicity with the target language culture.

Based on the continuum of degrees of truth-seeking and utility-attaining in the theory of Translator Behavior Criticism, this paper gives a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the translation of “folk language”such as idioms, dialects and allegorical sayings in the four English versions ofLuotuoxiangziby Lao She. The four translators are respectively Evan King, Jane James, Shi Xiaojing and Howard Goldblatt. It then investigates the social causes and translator-related factors behind the different degrees of truth-seeking and utility-attaining in light of the concept of “translator role”.
