        The Essential connotation of the core of English literacy

        【Abstract】As we all know, language is a tool for communication. For Chinese students, learning English as a foreign language is designed to enable students to master another communication tool so that they can use English in their future life. For Chinese , English is a foreign language. Learning English is conducive to our cooperation with western countries in economy, culture, science, technology and other fields, as well as to learning scientific and cultural knowledge.

        Ⅰ. The educational nature of English core literacy

        All the subjects are based on core literacy to set the content and goals of the course so English is no exception. The main difference about this measure is that besides emphasizing the development of students' disciplinary ability, it also highlights the educational value of English courses. The educational value of a subject refers to that the course content of a subject not only enables students to learn knowledge of certain subjects and develop the discipline skills, but also promotes the development of students in the aspects such as mental ability, emotional attitude, ideological morality and social responsibility etc.

        Ⅱ. The basic components of English core literacy

        (?。㏕he language skills

        Language ability is the skill to understand and express meaning by means of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a certain context. The second is to master the knowledge of English language and apply the knowledge in the specific context, especially the ability to construct and express meaning by using English. The third is the ability to understand spoken and written English in a variety of genres to recognize and appreciate the ways in which they express the meaning; The last ability is to use spoken and written English for expression and communication.

        (ⅱ) The cultural character

        Cultural character refers to the understanding of Chinese and foreign culture and the recognition of excellent cultures, which is the knowledge quality, humanistic accomplishment and behavioral orientation of students in the context of globalization. Through the study of English courses, students can acquire cultural knowledge, understand cultural connotation, compare the similarities and differences of different cultures, which can help students form correct values and certain ability of cross-cultural communication. By comparing and summarizing the culture reflected in the discourse, students will form their own cultural positions and attitudes.

        (ⅲ) The thinking quality

        The thinking quality refers to people's thinking characteristics, reflecting their level and characteristics in logicality, criticality, innovation and other aspects. The thinking quality as the core accomplishment is not only different from the thinking ability in general sense, but also different from the understanding ability and expression ability in the core literacy of language ability. Instead, it is some thinking quality which are closely related to English learning.

        (ⅳ ) The learning ability

        The learning ability refers to the ability of students to apply and adjust English learning strategies, widen English learning channels and strive to improve the efficiency of English learning. Through the study of English courses, students can maintain their interest in English learning and have a clear sense of goal ,then they can acquire learning resources through multiple ways and plan learning time and tasks effectively.

        Due to various factors, it is not easy for Chinese students to learn English well. Therefore, it is particularly important to master the essentials of English learning from which students will benefit a lot such as forming good study habits and effective English learning strategies.

        Ⅲ. The relationship between the four dimensions of English core literacy

        The four dimensions of English core literacy are an indivisible whole, which permeate and promote each other. By improving students' language ability, students can not only improve their understanding of language, promote students to form positive attitudes and correct values, but also improve their thinking ability and autonomous learning ability.

        In short, the core literacy of English subjects is the embodiment of the core literacy of student,which is irreplaceable and involved in the construction of a core literacy system for students.
