Is a goodbye forever, or is it only until the next time? And is every goodbye a new welcome, or is it sometimes merely a full stop? And finally, does it come with a sunset, or with a silent nod and a broken heart? Worldwide cinema has been concerned with the composition of a beautiful and yet meaningful goodbye scene. The following are my six favorite goodbye moments from the cinema world.
但E.T.
The Goodbye Scene: A young boy bids his alien pal farewell1) as the latter returns to his home planet, forever.
Its Importance: Who didn't have one's own heart melt upon the warmness of the intergalactic friendship formed? "I'll be right here" is a quote with a finger targeting the head2) and not the heart, because memory is what keeps a true friendship alive. It is a physical separation, but E.T. taught us that what goodbyes do to us in person can have a seat reserved forever inside our heads.
The Goodbye Scene: A formerly vainglorious3) German businessman bids farewell to all the Jewish workers he saved from concentration camps throughout World War II, only to realize—a little too late—how much more he could have achieved.
Its Importance: All of the victims saved in the hands of Oskar Schindler are grateful during their salutation4) to him, but he is suddenly filled with regret, self-pity, and epiphany5). His vain6) gold objects could have saved the lives of hundreds more, but it is too late for him to change things. And his breakdown and sudden realization is what he has to be burdened with from this goodbye for the rest of his days.
Schindler's List 《
1. bid (sb.) farewell:
2. E.T.在與小男孩告別時用手指碰觸他的頭說:“I'll be right here.”
3. vainglorious [?ve?n?ɡl??ri?s] adj.
endprint
The Goodbye Scene: The mythical7) Scarlett O'Hara loses in love, only to gain in self-realization.
Its Importance: Clark Gable's unforgiving goodbye and assurance of not giving a damn8) pretty much stands in the top six goodbye scenes. But what inspires us more is the moment Scarlett decides to pack herself up9), re-emerge from the bottom for good, and start her new life the way she wishes to, not out of grief but out of triumph and determination. It is at this moment that an unwelcome goodbye is turned into a hardening tool to be embraced by our heroine, and this scene is turned into an eternal lesson to divorcees10) wishing to rebound11) for good.
Gone with the Wind 《
Where the Wild Things Are 《野獸家園》
The Goodbye Scene: A young boy waves goodbye to his invisible animal friends and the fantastic land of adventure, to both sides' acknowledgment and disappointment.
Its Importance: "Please don't go, I'll eat you up; I love you so" is one hell of12) a way to bid your king farewell. And so all the mythical creatures living in Max's heart and head are about to lose eye contact with him, but none of them will actually lose each other—not really, not ever.
Max needs to grow up and leave the images of the cute furry creatures and their mythical land, but the memories of all the things they've taught him and all he's felt among them are not to leave him anytime soon. There will forever be a home for Max's wild things inside Max, but now it's time for him to go back home.
The Goodbye Scene: A boy waves his first best friend and his last childhood summer goodbye, as his future self informs us in voiceover13) of the said best friend's brutal murder.
Its Importance: The protagonist chooses to mentally say goodbye to his former best friend on the occasion of the latter's death, by remembering their last actual goodbye in flesh and blood. This serves as an opportunity for him to plunge deep into his childhood and wave it goodbye one last time. When the protagonist types, "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve", our tears start rolling.endprint
Stand By Me 《伴我同行》
4. salutation [?s?lju?te??n] n.
5. epiphany [??p?f?ni] n.
6. vain [ve?n] adj.
7. mythical [?m?θ?kl] adj.
8. not give a damn:
9. pack oneself up: 整理,收拾
10. divorcee [d??v???si?] n.
11. rebound [r??ba?nd] vi.
13. voiceover [?v??s???v?(r)] n.
This is the worst day of my life. You know what I'm realizing? My life is just gonna go, like that. This series of milestones. Getting married. Having kids. Getting divorced. The time that we thought you were dyslexic When I taught you how to ride a bike. Getting divorced again. Getting my master's degree. Finally getting the job I wanted. Sending Samantha off to college. Sending you off to college. You know what's next? Huh? It's my fuckin' funeral! ... I just thought there would be more.
The Goodbye Scene: A young man says goodbye to his mother before leaving for college, and she comes to realize that she also has to say goodbye to him.
Its Importance: This scene expresses one of the most common reactions to a goodbye speech most of us have come to experience—we don't want to say goodbye. Yes, her child is now a grown man who has to go to college; yes, kids grow up and life goes on, but does it really?
During her breaking monologue14), Olivia comes to realize that she is not only losing contact with a child, but also the meaning she's given to her everyday life throughout all these years. How do you accept the roughness and inevitability of "time takes it all" as life goes on, by merely waving goodbye to the person you love most of all in the world?
And not because he is dying, but because he has to live, like you. We don't have the answer, the director doesn't have the answer, and Mason merely keeps on his ride moving forward—because this is merely life.
Boyhood 《
1. disclosure [d?s?kl????(r)] n.
2. hospice [?h?sp?s] n. endprint
