        A Study of English Reading in High SchoolBased on the Theory of Needs Analysis

        【Abstract】As is indicated in the Ordinary high school English Curriculum Standards, the main task of the high school is to improve the students comprehensive abilities. Scientific and reasonable need analysis on the learners will help teachers put up with more practical teaching methods which benefit learners from various aspects.This paper analyzes and discusses the relationship between English reading teaching and learning in high school based on the theory of needs analysis.

        1. Introduction of Needs Analysis

        Needs analysis can be carried out in a number of different ways which can be classified as either inductive (case studies, observations etc.) or deductive (questionnaires, surveys etc.) (Berwick, 1989), Which has already widely used in education, trade, manufacturing and services, etc. The notion of needs analysis originally came into existence in Indian educational system with the experimental project of Michael West (1888-1973). And it was introduced into language teaching through the ESP movement by the Council of Europe Modern Language Projects group, in particular, the “needs-based philosophy” of language teaching (See, Hutchinson & Waters, 1987). It was later realized that all language learners (including those learning languages for general purposes) have unique needs and all sound language education programes should be based on an analysis of the learners needs.

        2. Significance of high school English reading teaching based on the theory of the needs analysis

        Demands of modern education for teaching work is increasing all the time, the teaching process needs to shift the focus of teaching work from teaching to learning. Teaching work based on demand analysis theory for high school English reading teaching are changes ideas and methods, and new ideas and conditions are provided. In English reading teaching, the traditional teaching methods and concepts are relatively single, the time of explaining reading methods and skills is not enough, reading materials outdate. All of these cause the limitation for the present stage of English reading teaching work Based on the theory of needs analysis, English reading teaching has made great change that is pay more attention to cultivate students reading skills, to improve the students reading level, which make grate significance for enhancing high school English reading teaching.

        3. Problems existing in the teaching of English reading in High School

        Firstly, in the current English reading teaching process, students lack of interest motivation in reading, .At present stage, the English Teaching in high school mainly do exercises, so that students can learn English in the process of doing exercises. This is difficult for students to have a good reading interests.

        Secondly, vocabulary of high school students is not enough.Many students find that many new words turn up in the reading materials which affect the students comprehension of materials, thus causing the reading difficulties.

        Thirdly, students lack of reading skills.Need analysis theory is very necessary for students to improve reading skills. Nowadays, students reading skills and methods are lacking in sufficient training, which is difficult to ensure that the learning effect.

        4. Measures to strengthen the teaching of English reading in High School

        Firstly, pay attention to cultivate students reading interest and habit. In the high school teaching, teachers should analyze students reading levels, and increasing the students reading interest through the arrangement of reasonable reading teaching content.

        Secondly, Strengthen students Vocabulary. Teachers should help students to expand their vocabulary and to guide them guess meanings of words when students encounter new words.Help students remember words timely to strengthen their vocabulary.

        Thirdly, develop students reading skills. Teachers should focus on cultivating students reading skills in teaching process and training their reading skills from the shallower to the deeper. And teachers should guide students reading skills based on their reading knowledges.

        5. Conclusion

        English reading teaching in high school is the key to develop students good language ability.According to needs analysis theory, to analyze and improve high school English reading teaching can be better to enhance teaching quality, which lay a good foundation for students to learn English in the future.
