The history of Le Meurice hotel begins in 1771 in Calais， France， where upper-class British travellers on their way to Paris would arrive after crossing the Straits of Dover. There， a 32 year-old enterprising regional postmaster， Charles-Augustin Meurice （1739-1820）， welcomed them to French shores， putting them up in his Calais coaching inn and arranging rides to Paris aboard his coach service. Back then， it was a 36-hour trip.

When old Maurice reached the age of 79， it was the most chaotic period of French modern history. Bourbon was to overthrow Napoleon's first Republic， and Louis XVIII was about to be enthroned， and the social order was absent.Following his dad's advice， Louis Meurice built a second coaching in Paris in 1818 to welcome the weary travellers upon arrival. After twelve years， at the time of July revolution in 1830， the Parisians begun to overthrow the emperor， chaos ensued. Le Meurice moved in 1835 to its present site， one of the most fashionable locales in the city， overlooking the historic Tuileries Garden.
