“戶口”一詞是頗具特色的中國詞匯，想必大家一定不會(huì)陌生。與戶口相關(guān)的事情很多，小到辦護(hù)照或者港澳臺(tái)通行證，大到是否能在當(dāng)?shù)貐⒓痈呖蓟蛘哔I房買車。有人說戶口限制了人才的發(fā)展，也有人說戶口規(guī)范了政府對(duì)公民的管理。既然戶口如此重要，本著“學(xué)以致用”的原則，廣大英語學(xué)習(xí)者們很有必要知曉它的英文說法?，F(xiàn)在，我們就一起來討論如何將“戶口”翻譯為英語。

為了精確翻譯“戶口”，我們先來了解它準(zhǔn)確的中文含義?！冬F(xiàn)代漢語詞典》第六版明確說明，“戶口”與“戶籍”同義，指“公安部門以戶為單位登記本地區(qū)內(nèi)居民的冊(cè)子，轉(zhuǎn)指作為本地區(qū)居民的身份”。換句話說，“戶口”可以是具體的概念，指戶口簿（也叫戶口本）；也可以是抽象的概念，指某地居民的合法居住身份?！冬F(xiàn)代漢語詞典》對(duì)“戶口”的描述有四個(gè)關(guān)鍵詞——“以戶為單位”、“登記”、“冊(cè)子”以及“身份”?！耙詰魹閱挝弧笨捎胔ousehold表示，Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English（《朗文當(dāng)代英語詞典》）對(duì)household的解釋是all the people who live together in one house，也即“同住一個(gè)屋檐下的所有人”，與“以戶為單位”對(duì)應(yīng)；“登記”可作名詞譯為registration；“冊(cè)子”可譯為booklet，Collins COBUILD Advanced Learners Dictionary 5th Edition[《柯林斯高級(jí)英語學(xué)習(xí)詞典（第五版）》]是這樣解釋booklet的：A booklet is a small book that has a paper cover and that gives you information about something，也即“承載某種信息的有封面的小書”，這跟戶口簿的外形與功能相符。

因此，戶口若指戶口簿，可譯為household registration booklet，有些地方也譯作household registration permit，這里的permit是“許可證”的意思，以下文字就用permit指戶口簿：One of Chinas oldest tools of population control， the hukou is essentially a household registration permit， akin to（類似）an internal passport.【來源：《華盛頓郵報(bào)》官方網(wǎng)站】我們經(jīng)常說到的“戶口簿原件/戶口簿復(fù)印件”就是the original of a household registration booklet/a copy of a household registration booklet（請(qǐng)注意冠詞the與a的使用）。

順便說一下，經(jīng)常與“戶口”這一概念一起出現(xiàn)的是“戶口所在地”，填表的時(shí)候通常會(huì)用到?！皯艨谒诘亍钡挠⒄Z翻譯，流行的版本大都比較復(fù)雜，由于篇幅關(guān)系，這里暫不列出。事實(shí)上，與其“舍近求遠(yuǎn)”，不如 “簡單粗暴”，將“戶口所在地”譯作place of household registration，這樣反倒言簡意賅，因?yàn)槲覀冇衟lace of birth（出生地）一說。
