        人教課標選修8 Unit 4 Pygmalion Warming up&Pre-reading教學設計與反思

        Teaching Aims

        ●Students will be capable of getting to know the theory of Pygmalion and the importance or the function of expectation;

        ●Students will be capable of being familiar with the movie My Fair Lady,including the main characters,major plot and part of its content.

        ●Students will be capable of being aware that it is the expectation that gives others or oneself the hope,the trust or the confidence to be better and to achieve one’s ambition;in addition,they will be more willing to be nice to others by giving positive expectations.

        Teaching Procedures

        Step 1:listen,read and guess

        1.Reading the English and guess in which country it may exist—India.

        2.Listening to one sentence of the teacher and guess what it means or at least where she comes from—the south part of China.

        The teacher will deliver one sentence in her own dialect which is from Zhejiang Province:“今天和大家一起上課我很開心”。

        3.(optional)Two foreigners will be shown on the video with American and British accents respectively.

        So dear students,from the accent,we may tell where a person comes from or at least which specific area a person belongs to.Even in one country,one’s accent can tell your social classes.Do you know which country?—England,especially in London.The part is designed to attract the interest of students at the beginning of the class and make full use of the dialect of myself because dialect is so close to the students’daily life.

        Step 2:Read,practice and express

        In this part,a tongue twister will be prepared and invite students to challenge a shorter time to finish reading it.In this way the teacher can lead another key word to the class.(A timing machine is needed)

        What I want is a proper cup of coffee made in a proper copper coffee pot.Believe it or not,all what I want is a proper cup of coffee made in a proper copper coffee pot.If I cannot have a proper cup of coffee made in a proper copper coffee pot,I would have a cup of tea.

        ●Questions are designed here in order to have students involved in this activity.(Flexible)

        (1)Who is brave enough to read the tongue twister aloud?

        (2)Do you believe he can do better?

        (3)How many seconds do you expect him to finish reading it?

        (4)Are you expecting yourself to be faster?

        Fabulous!You did much better than I expected.But here I have two questions,one is for the audience,the other is for our participants.When we said “I think he can”“I believe he can”“I expect him to finish it faster”,what were we giving him or her?—Expectation,trust,confidence.

        When you heard the above sentences,how did you feel?—confident,happy... (Students’answers may vary)

        The purpose of this design is that it might be easy to get into the real topic of this class and this unit.And students also get a chance to express themselves.It is also one part of realization of the emotional goal—learn to give positive expectation to others and oneself.

        Transitional sentence:

        Today,in the unit of Pygmalion,we are going to enjoy a film which happened in London having something to do with the word“expectation”.

        Step 3:Pre-reading—Get into the film

        The film might be not so familiar to you.And I still want to know how many of you have seen it.I am convinced that the starring role is well-known to us.Even she is the goddess for lots of people.(Audrey Hepburn)

        Please open your book and turn to page 28.Please find the answers for my first question:

        ●What are the three roles mentioned in the following play?

        (Three pictures of the three main roles are needed here and they will be stuck to the blackboard)

        ●Please read the materials on 28 again and fulfill the blanks on your handout.

        ●After getting some basic information of the film and main characters,we will have an enjoyable time.I have prepared two videos for your all,part of the film.While watching,you are supposed to find the following information:what does the lady look like?How does her English sound?

        ●What is the biggest change which happened to Eliza?In this part,I think you had better to underline some of her lines and you can find the difference very quickly.

        ●What do you think caused this change?

        The training from Higgins;The hard work of Eliza;The expectation of Colonel.

        Step 4:Pygmalion

        Based on what we have discussed above,I think it is time for us to know an important guy and a story on the page 28.That is Pygmalion.

        Now please look at the three pictures and the lined given under them.Can you make a conclusion that what you can get from the story?

        Yes,thanks a lot.The three pictures are something with expectation,and something with realization.It is all included in a famous theory,which is called the Theory of Pygmalion.Actually,the film is adapted from the old story.

        Step 5:Conclusion

        Dear students,with so much we have talked about,can you finish the following form?

        Step 6:Class activity

        In this part,the number 317 will be put on the screen,which stands for the day the students have before they take the entrance examination.And all the students have a chance to pick out one or two students and to tell them their expectations on them.

        Step 7:Homework

        1.Please finish seeing the film any time you are free in this month.

        2.Go to find more examples of the using of the Theory of Pygmalion.

        教學反思

        課后筆者對這堂課進行了反思,主要從課堂亮點和課堂不足兩個方面進行:

        【課堂亮點】一是面向全體學生,充分體現(xiàn)了學生是課堂的主體,同時也充分發(fā)揮了教師在課堂當中的引導作用;二是關(guān)注學生情感,所組織的活動和選用的素材都貼近學生生活;三是在課堂中能及時對學生的回答作出評價。

        【課堂不足】一是課堂容量稍大;二是課堂中語速偏快,沒有留有一定的時間讓學生思考;三是本課的教學意圖介紹得不太清楚。
