Nurse: Grandma Yang, take it easy and calm down. You had an accident a little while ago and we had to press your chest to save your life. That’s why you are having this chest pain.
Patient: I remember I was in a family party in my house welcoming my granddaughter who had just come back from America. I cooked some sticky rice balls, and we were celebrating. But how did this accident happen?
Nurse: Oh, older people like you should be more careful when you eat foods made of sticky rice. It is better you don’t eat them at all.
Patient: But sticky rice such as rice balls and pastries is my favorite food.
Nurse: If you like them so much and have to have some, then you should make the balls as small as possible, or cut the pastries into smaller pieces and eat them one by one in a slow pace.
Patient: I see. I should make smaller balls, cut the pastries into smaller pieces and eat them slowly, right?
Nurse: Yes. Before eating, you should sit in a comfortable upright position or inclining forward your body a little bit. Lying down in bed isn’t a good position for eating this kind of food.
Patient: Oh, I almost forgot. Today when I ate the sticky rice balls I was reclining on my chair.
Nurse: What were you feelings when the accident happened?
Patient: Nothing special. It seemed as if a curtain was put down slowly in front of a window before I was going to bed.
Nurse: Any other uncomfortable feeling?
Patient: Nothing else.
Nurse: That is good. It’ll be all right for you to have sticky rice foods, but make sure pay a little more attention to it.
Patient: Thank you.
Comments
Do not try to change the habits of the older people when providing the health education. Respect their lifestyles and make appropriate adjustment. Some key points to prevent choking are: smaller size in sticky rice foods, eat more slowly, and proper eating positions.
