1. Introduction
In China, some translators have translated Hemingway’s great novels into Chinese so that Chinese readers are able to read and comprehend Hemingway’s novels. It is obvious that different translators have different understandings of Hemingway’s novels. The translation strategies and skills vary from person to person. As far as I am concerned, Cheng Zhong-rui and Cheng Bi-de’s translation of For Whom the Bell Tolls is appropriate and outstanding.
2. Brief comments of Cheng Zhong-rui and Cheng Bi-de's translation
Firstly, in the translation of “I care for her seriously”, the word “seriously” is a little difficult to handle. Generally, “seriously” means “嚴(yán)肅地” or “認(rèn)真地” in Chinese. The translator has to choose one of the meanings. If we translate the whole sentence as “我嚴(yán)肅地照顧她”,it seems a little strange, and in Chinese the description is not appropriate enough. As we can see, the translator translates it as “我真心愛她”, which well conveys the meaning of the original text. In the process of translation, we’d better to adopt the appropriate strategy or skill neatly. The translator adopts the skill of “domestication” in order to make target readers well understand the details of this novel.
Secondly, “but for the Maria and me it means that we must live all of our life in this time” is translated as “可是對瑪麗亞和我兩個人來說, 就意味著我們在這段時間里必須盡量享受生活”. The word “l(fā)ive” means “to have existence as a plant or animal” or “enjoy life”. In this novel, Jordan and Maria love each other deeply and faithfully but they may fall apart because of the war. In the short period of three days, they enjoy the life of peace. Thus just as what have been translated by Cheng Zhong-rui and Cheng Bi-de, it is more appropriate to translate the word “l(fā)ive” as “享受生活”. From this example, we may find that the translator is so responsible for his translation that they may be well prepared to translate this novel.
Thirdly, the sentence “That you and the Maria should make use of what time there is as two human beings” is translated as “但愿你和瑪麗亞作為兩個人好好利用現(xiàn)有的時間” . The translation “作為兩個人” seems not appropriate enough in Chinese. In my opinion, it is better to translate the sentence as “但愿你和瑪麗兩人能夠充分利用現(xiàn)在的時光”. From this example, we can clearly see that it is not appropriate to translate the original text word by word.
Fourthly, the sentence “We have two weak elements” is translated as “我們有兩個稀松的家伙”. The original text “weak elements” means “bad guys”. Thus “稀松” is not proper enough here to describe those two bad men. In my opinion, it is better translate it as “混蛋”, which more conforms to Chinese culture. The translation strategy of domestication can be adopted. In some circumstances the translator has conveyed the meaning of the original; however, the wording can be polished and better. Translation is a rather complex task in a degree. It requires translator to select the most appropriate wording in target language.
3. Conclusion
In conclusion, Cheng Zhong-rui and Cheng Bi-de’s translation is brilliant in general, even though there exist some points which aren’t so satisfying. From their translation, I have learned that we should be careful and cautious in translation and we need to be faithful to the original text. The translation of novels is a tough task for translators from other cultural communities. In order to improve the translation of novels, we are required to read more novels written by foreign authors. The more experience of translation we accumulate, the better the quality of translation is. An excellent translator is improving his ability of translation all the time.
