In 1985, China had an electronic and mechanical prod-uct export value of US$1.68 billion, ranking 28th in theworld and taking a share of about 0.08% of the global exportmarket. By 1990, the ratio was still less than 1%, however, only 18 years later in 2007 the ratio has risen to 12% or so (seeTable 2). ~nis reflects the fact that the volume of electronicand mechanical products exported from China has increasedrapidly since the 1980s and that China's international com-petitiveness in these commodities has been improved.
