Situation: Lin Zhi has just run into her friend Joe in a Beijing bar, and they're discussing the upcoming Beijing Midi festival.
Lin Zhi: Hey, I heard you're going to Midi next month too. I'm really excited about going! I've never been to a festival before.
Joe: Really? You're a festival virgin?
Lin Zhi: I guess so. What about you? Did you go to any at home?
Joe: Of course! I went to Glastonbury a few times, and Reading twice. They were great.
Lin Zhi: What's Glastonbury?
Joe: It's one of the biggest festivals in the UK. Glastonbury's a little town in the West Country, famous because it's very closely associated with King Arthur, and there's a big alternative culture there – you know, hippies and neo-pagans. So every year there's a huge festival there, with all kinds of people. Reading's smaller, but still very cool.
Lin Zhi: Was it good?
Joe: I loved them, but it was muddy as hell, and there was a lot of ticket sharping going on.Festivals are expensive nowadays, but my parents paid for me the first time.
Lin Zhi: Your parents like rock music too?
Joe: My dad was at Woodstock in '69.
Lin Zhi: The famous American festival?
Joe: Yeah, he saw Jimi Hendrix play live. It must have been amazing – Hendrix was on top form that day.
Lin Zhi: I hear there were a lot of girls there too – naked girls. Well, covered in mud.
Joe: I don't want to think about that with my dad! At least it was before he met mum …
Notes
1. festival virgin
2. alternative culture
3. neo-pagans
4. as hell
5. ticket sharping
6. top form
