This charming， bizarre TV series， which ran for nine episodes earlier this year before being cut short by the writer's strike， has just started its second season， and the first is now available on DVD. Described as a \"forensic fairy tale\" by its creator， the show tells the story of Ned (Lee Case)， a young pie-maker with a remarkable gift – he can bring the dead back to life. But， also， only for 60 seconds without consequence; after that something else nearby must die in order for the newly revived to stay alive. After a young Ned revives his dog， Digby， after he's hit by a truck， a nearby squirrel falls dead as a result – and when he resurrects his mother， his little neighbour girlfriend's father dies. What's worse， Ned can never touch the newly revived again or， like his mother when she gives him a goodnight kiss， they will drop dead again.

Adult Ned has teamed up with a sardonic， portly detective， Emerson (Chi McBride) to solve crimes by talking to the murder victim， then dropping them dead again with a touch within 60 seconds. When he finds his childhood girlfriend murdered， though， he revives her permanently (killing the funeral director nearby as a result) and he still loves her – but they can never touch.

Despite the morbid subject matter， the show has a light， comic tone. Characters have funny names， everything is painted in bright colours， and the dialogue is sharp and witty. Frequent use of CGI is made to create the super-colorful， eccentric world the characters inhabit， and the style can take a little getting used to， but once into the show viewers will lose all suspension of disbelief in the sheer glorious ridiculousness of it all. Villains in the first few episodes include an exploding car that runs on daisies， a criminal who sends messages by carrier pigeon to his one true love， and the descendant of a Chinese-American Civil War veteran seeking to avenge his ancestor's honour.It's all total nonsense， but very lovely nonsense and greatly enjoyable.
