American and Pakistani intelligence confimed that a major terrorist attack that took place on the 21st of September was \"almost certainly\" the work of the Al-Qaeda network. A van full of 600 kg of explosives was driven by a suicide bomber into the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. Although guards stopped the van at the gate， the detonation badly damaged the hotel， killing 53 people and wounding over 250.

The Marriott was one of Islamabad's two five-star hotels， and many important visitors， including the Czech ambassador，were among the dead. Pakistan has suffered a spate of terrorist attacks recently， including the murder of Presidential candidate Benazir Bhutto， and is going through a period of massive political instability. Some foreigners are already leaving the country in fear of their lives.

The border areas are highly porous， with people easily crossing between countries. Pakistan's intelligence service is also believed to have played a major part in the creation and funding of the Taleban.

Under pressure from the American government， the Pakistani military recently launched an attack against Al Qaeda and Taleban fighters in the northwest of the country， while the Americans began an offensive on the other side of the border. American bombers have also made attacks into Pakistan， targetting Taleban bases， which has stirred anti-American feeling in the country.

With the government torn and the economy close to collapse， however， this cancer may be terminal.
