The world we live in today is full of opportunities. It is a world where opportunities have never been greater for those who know how to teach children to read, or those who know how to distribute financial risk; never greater for those who understand the cell and the pixel; never greater for those who can master, and navigate between, legal codes, faith traditions, computer platforms, political viewpoints.
It is also a world where some are left further and further behind - those who are not educated, those trapped in poverty and violence, those for whom equal opportunity is just a hollow phrase.
Scientific and technological advances are enabling us to comprehend the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the most basic constituents of matter, and the miracle of life. They offer the prospect of liberating people from drudgery on an unprecedented scale and of eliminating dreaded diseases.
At the same time, today, the actions, and inaction, of human beings imperil not only life on the planet, but the very life of the planet.
Globalization is making the world smaller, faster and richer. One-third of human beings now live in places where the standards of living may increase 30 fold in a single human lifespan - a transformation that dwarfs what we call the Industrial Revolution. Still, 9/11, avian flu, Darfur, and Iran remind us that a smaller, faster world is not necessarily a safer world.
Our world is bursting with knowledge - but desperately in need of wisdom. Now, when sound bites are getting shorter, when instant messages crowd out essays, and when individual lives grow more frenzied, university graduates capable of deep reflection are what our world needs.
For all these reasons I believed - and I believe even more strongly today - in the unique and irreplaceable mission of universities.
Universities are where the wisdom we cannot afford to lose is preserved from generation to generation. Among all human institutions, universities can look beyond present norms to future possibilities, can look through current considerations to emergent opportunities.
There is more to equal opportunity. Should not every young person have the opportunity to choose a career that, while it may not be lucrative, serves our world - whether it is performing basic research, counseling the troubled, teaching in urban schools, struggling to bring peace to nations, preserving the public health?

My first year at the University of Toronto was a dizzying experience. Like most freshmen, I arrived full of wide-eyed wonder and awkward self-consciousness, uncertain and somewhat unready for what the next four years would bring me. My anxiety was only amplified by the fact that the university I was about to enter was one of the oldest, largest and most respected institutions in the country.

Once admitted, the real adventure begins. Intellectually, university is several levels above high school, if not in a completely different league. I still remember the distinct sense of awe and inadequacy I felt when I first overheard my peers arguing during dinnertime over the relative merits of Nietzsche and Kant's accounts of moral subjectivity and discussing how they'd opened a new chapter of their non-profit organization in Africa. In this massive ocean of academia, I felt like plankton. All the self-confidence I had acquired in the previous thirteen years of grade school evaporated as I discovered not only how thoroughly well-read professors were in all topics, but also how ably students could engage with them, drawing on seemingly endless reserves of knowledge and experience I seemed to lack.

But again, there is no need to be alarmed. I realized much later on that the best response to these situations is not to back away afraid of my own failures, but to embrace the opportunity to learn something new from your cohorts. University is not all about classes and studying. In fact, some of the most important lessons I learned came outside the classroom and from interacting with my peers.

Many students who are \"stars\" for the first week quickly disappear as soon as classes start while others emerge out of their first week timidity to shine. New friends and friendship circles are formed and rearranged constantly as classes and living arrangements progress. The easiest way to meet people is to live in the dormitories. Unfortunately, Trinity does not boast the most luxurious residences, and in my first year, many nights were spent hunting mice and dodging spiders.However, in retrospect, those experiences helped build camaraderie with my floormates and have become great memories I still cherish.

There is no shortage of partying at Trinity. The party scene is often new to Trinity freshmen who are accustomed to overachieving and diligently studying. The change of social surroundings mixed with the absence of parental supervision produces a potentially overwhelming experience that can cause students to falter academically. It is often said that Trinity students have the highest entering averages, the lowest first-year averages and the highest graduating averages.

This up-and-down path is representative of the broader undergraduate university experience in Toronto: the initial excitement of living on your own; the struggle to overcome personal insecurities and establish a social and academic niche; and finally, at the end of the year, a deep satisfaction with what you've achieved and who you've become. Being part of Trinity University at the University of Toronto had plenty of highs and lows, but in the end, it helped me be a more well-rounded student and a better human being.

Like all Chinese students, I was in high school until I was 18, back in 2005. When I was young, I knew that I wanted to study at one of China's top universities. On the same day that English First celebrated their fortieth birthday, I ended up placing highly in most of my examinations, earning me a place at EF Brittin College, part of the International Language School in London.

At EF Brittin, I ended up studying just about everything I would ever need to prepare me for study at the world's top universities. During this time, my eyes were opened to new ideas, theories and concepts I'd never considered before. I tried my best to learn everything there was to offer, and paid plenty of attention to improving my English. After all, practice makes perfect.

I love Britain, I love Oxford, not only because it is one of the top universities around the world, but also for its cultural background. Oxford and Cambridge are very well-known inside the UK, and are generally familiar to people in other countries. Their fame stems from a variety of factors, including an association with a long line of distinguished historical figures, as well as knowledge of them spread through the influence of the British Empire and the worldwide prominence of the English language. People commonly associate Oxford with politics and the arts, while Cambridge is viewed as a more scientific institution.

Nowadays, I'm working hard to become an actuary. I'm pretty good at maths, and find just about anything to do with numbers to be really interesting. Yet despite a natural aptitude for the subject, I still need to work hard at Oxford. Nothing ever comes easily, and with aspirations of a job like actuary, that's the dead truth.

The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, collectively known as Oxbridge, are the two oldest and most famous universities in Britain. Both were founded more than 750 years ago, and between them have produced a large number of Britain's most prominent scientists, writers and politicians, as well as noted figures in many other fields. The rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge also has a long history, dating back to the days when Cambridge was founded by dissident scholars from Oxford.

I was 18 years old when I first heard the news. Six months previous, I'd submitted my predicted grades, personal questionnaire and university/course choices to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. In all fairness, I probably hadn't done as well in my A-level studies as I could have, but I was still looking at a decent set of grades.

My first slap across the face came when I received a phone call from my first-choice university, the University of Staffordshire, informing me that though I'd been accepted on both the courses I applied for, they'd cancelled them due to lack of interest. Then the University of Bournemouth told me I was academically unsuitable for their program (a somewhat harsh assessment, I feel, given that I met their entry requirements). I couldn't even remember what university I'd put down as my fourth choice. I'd been totally convinced that I was going to Staffordshire, and was downcast at the thought that I'd not be going to University at all.

Then a few days later, another letter from UCAS arrived on the doorstep.

I put the letter down, looked up at my mum, and blinked. \"I… I’m going to Sunderland.\" Cheers, hugs, and general excitement. Then I stopped, thought for a second, and looked at my mother again.

I moved in to my hall of residence in Panns Bank after a summer living in and backpacking across the United States. There were six of us in Flat 2, four girls and two guys, none of whom knew anybody else in Sunderland, so we had the best part of a weekend to get ourselves acquainted. The next week was Fresher's Week, seven days of registering for courses, finding our way around the city and getting to know our housemates and the rest of the student body. Well, that was what we were SUPPOSED to be doing when we weren't getting as drunk as humanly possible on very cheap beer in the Student's Union and throwing house or flat-warming parties every thirty seconds. Needless to say, several student bodies became very intimately acquainted during this period.

After a week of fun and debauchery, classes started in earnest. That first semester I only had twenty hours of classes a week. On Wednesdays and Fridays, I didn't have class at all. One of the biggest problems I faced with this new-found freedom and control over my education was my own tendency to procrastinate and get distracted by just about anything – a phone call from the gang to go drinking, the sounds of an impromptu football match or snowball fight or barbecue out in the Court, or one of my flatmates yelling at us all for leaving dirty dishes in the sink (none of which, of course, were ever mine. No sir. Honest.)

Eventually, student life fell into a routine. I'd wake up sometime around 12pm (occasionally earlier if I had class), put off doing work while I went to eat, go to class, come back, work a little, and then get bored and go and hang out with my friends. I had a very irresponsible attitude during my first semester, and while I'm not proud of it, it did allow me to experience university life to the full. I joined the fencing team, the games society and the university magazine. I got an internship at the local newspaper, working on a huge range of stories and going in to the office twice a week. I threw myself in to student life, suffering the hangovers, the late nights and the abject poverty along with my fellow freshmen.

And then the end of the semester hit, and all our deadlines loomed. We'd lock ourselves in our rooms, or camp out in the library until the wee small hours. The last three weeks of term became a blur of papers and exhaustion, and I loved every second of it. Before I knew it, the first semester was over.

Nearly five years later, I look back on that first six months – and my entire three years - at Sunderland with a fondness I can't describe. I will always cherish the memories, the friendships, and the habits that I picked up in that time. I still wear my university polo shirt and my fencing team drill top. No matter where the future may take me, the University of Sunderland will always have a place in my heart.

The first moment I stepped onto Brown University's campus, I decided I had to spend the next four years of my life there. I abandoned my dream about attending Harvard as soon as I saw the students on the quad playing Frisbee, people lounging under shady trees reading thick books. I studied architecture, so I wanted nothing more than to be one of those students on the grass under the trees.

My parents and I traveled together in late August to help me move into my university dorm, Perkins, and participate in Orientation Week, a week to get acquainted with your peers in the dorm, locate buildings on campus, and settle in before classes began. I was disappointed by the small size of the room that I would be sharing with a complete stranger. There were no private bathrooms but rather communal bathrooms shared by everyone on the floor. As my parents helped me haul my suitcases upstairs and into my room, we ran smack into a boy dressed only in a towel on his way to the showers - my floor was coed.

I opened the door to find my randomly assigned roommate already inside - a brunette with a soft voice introduced herself as Tsveti, from Bulgaria. As soon as it was time for bed, we switched off the light, and I could feel the mutual awkwardness in the air - we were each wondering how we would be able to fall asleep merely meters away from a stranger.

At most universities, dorms are often ugly and cramped, but living in close proximity with so many other people allows you to quickly form friendships. Everyone is far from home and looking to make friends, but more importantly, freshmen are suddenly given an incredible amount of freedom. You can stay up all night talking or watching DVDs before going to the roof to watch the sunrise, you'll exchange books and discover new authors, you can share your fears and ideas about life with people from all over the world - it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.

Brown has an \"open curriculum\" which means there are no required classes for students to take except for fulfilling the requirements in the student's chosen major. Suddenly I was responsible for signing up for the right classes, arriving on time and turning in my work without the reminders from parents and teachers. I could stay up all night having fun, but I had to deal with the consequences. It was my responsibility to get my life together, and that can be a tough adjustment.

Starting university is a chance to really explore your interests and broaden your horizons. For my first semester, I signed up for a playwriting class and a psychology course, even though I knew nothing about either subject. I loved these classes so much that I graduated with a double major in playwriting and psychology. I also joined the photography club and worked for a literary magazine. Of course I made mistakes, as well. I signed up for an advanced economics course, and I hated every minute of it. When you come to a very competitive university, you shouldn't be surprised that your peers are very intelligent, and the courses are very tough. I often found myself staying up all night to finish papers or cramming up for an exam in the library. But freshman are young and resilient; I would feel tired and stressed about school, and then glance around at 4am to see other people in the same position, and it was very comforting.

My advice for your first year of university is advice that my university president gave us during our commencement. Don't play it safe. Don't be afraid to feel awkward or delve into unknown territory. This is the time to do it. Put yourselves in scary situations. When you feel totally comfortable, you aren't growing. It's something I still think about today when I make choices in my life. Oh yeah, and university food is terrible—you should find good, cheap restaurants or learn how to cook.

It's perfectly natural to be excited before your first year of University. We have it drilled into us by friends, teachers and the media that higher education is all about making new friends, learning new things, being inspired by teachers and of course, having fun during the social activities. Sometimes, the experience matches the imagination, and sometimes, it can be utterly different.In my case, I've had four first years at four different universities. Although they were always exciting, the only thing that remained consistent with my mental image of what student life should be like was the endless consumption of beer in the university bar.

Boring Engineering Students - University of Wollongong
臥龍崗大學(xué)的大一,我是無趣的工程系學(xué)生
Studying Mining Engineering at the University of Wollongong was my first experience with university life. I chose Mining Engineering because I was attracted to the money and power that it could give me. Also, the university campus itself is located very close to the beach, the city and plenty of nightlife, making it a convenient place to live.
在臥龍崗大學(xué)就讀采礦工程是我的第一次大學(xué)生活經(jīng)歷。我選擇采礦工程是因?yàn)槲冶凰軒Ыo我的金錢和權(quán)利吸引了。大學(xué)校園則離海灘很近,城市夜生活很豐富,這一切都使得這里成為一個(gè)適合居住的便利之所。
But I found myself struggling to pay attention in lectures. Unlike the other engineering students, I had no love for maths. I was more creatively minded. Consequently, in my lectures I found myself ignoring the teacher in favour of drawing pictures. After two weeks, I stopped going to lectures or doing homework and decided that I would learn everything the night before the exam. I then used my time to draw and write things by day.

Anyway, every Thursday night, the university bar offered discounted drinks and I always made sure that I bought plenty to make the most of the discounts. Because not many engineering students went out, I had to make friends with people from non-engineering courses. This was very interesting because I met a lot of different kinds of people. As I thought about how bored I was with engineering subjects, I reflected upon whether I really loved the money and power that engineering would give me. After one year, I withdrew from my Mining Engineering degree.

Strange Psychology Students - Australian National University (ANU)
澳大利亞國立大學(xué)的大一,我是奇怪的心理系學(xué)生
I then transferred to the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra to study Psychology. The ANU was a different university to Wollongong University. It is a research-based university so it is very theoretically orientated. As a general rule, Psychology students are quite strange and many of them have mental problems. They probably study Psychology because they want to understand themselves. I liked this about them. I think people who are strange are interesting (perhaps because I am strange myself).

In addition to being more interesting than engineering students, they were more sociable. After every lecture a group of us would go to the university bar to have a beer and talk about the theories we learnt in the lecture. I can honestly say that I learnt more in the bar than in the lectures. The bar conversations were free and we would come up with lots of ideas based upon the lectures. Furthermore, the students came from a very wide variety of backgrounds so I was able to hear a lot of diverse stories and perspectives on life. After many more beers over the next three years, I finally had my degree.

Experience is the Best Teacher - University of Canberra

Five years went by and I decided that I would get a postgraduate degree so I enrolled in a Masters of Marketing Communication at the University of Canberra. It is a very practical university. Not many of lecturers are involved in research. Instead, they are people who have worked in the marketing industry and want to share their experiences with students. Not only does their life experience make them practically minded, it also influences their teaching style. Because people must work in teams when they have jobs, the lecturers want students to work in teams when studying. Personally, I really like this form of education. The students talk about the subject matter and share ideas. If they are confused about anything, they can ask their group members, and other students will explain. If they have an idea that they think is good, they can suggest it, and other people will give their opinions. If there is a flaw in the idea then it can be exposed and remedied. Every individual in the group benefits from these discussions.

After class had finished, sometimes I suggested we continue the group work at the university bar. Unfortunately, most of my group members preferred the library for more talking. Postgraduate students are usually different to undergraduate students. They are older students who have already drunk plenty in their life and want to drink less. Occasionally; however, I managed to convince them to have some beers. Naturally, this made me happy. Although the marketing course was interesting, I decided I wanted to live in another country so I went to teach English in Japan for a year.

Work Alone - University of Sydney

When I returned to Australia, I enrolled in a Masters Degree in Professional Communication at the University of Sydney, and got credit for the marketing subjects I passed in Canberra. Once more I was a first year student, and excited about the upcoming university experience.

Unlike the University of Canberra, we did very little group work at the University of Sydney. I asked the lecturer why and was told that there were too many international students. Apparently, group work had caused some problems in the past and it was simpler to have students work alone. I wasn't too bothered by this though because by going to the bar I was able to have conversations that were just as good for my education. Sometimes even the lecturers would come to the bar with us. Over a few beers, we talked about the course, talked about the theories, talked about what was expected of students and perhaps even got the lecturers to think positively about us when they marked our assignments at the end of the year (The lecturers that came to the bar gave me distinctions) .

University is a great experience that millions of students look forward to every year. For me it also marked my first encounter with the world of work. Throughout high school my parents footed the bill, so I never really worried about saving money, balancing my checkbook or overextending my credit card. If I got in a pinch, I always had a back up plan - calling home. While I was at university, though, I wanted to be independent. I didn't want to have to rely on my folks for cash, but all the expense incurred by the cost of text books, eating out, socializing and just generally staying alive began to mount up, and by the middle of my first semester I decided to get a part-time job, working in a coffee shop.

When I first started out, I worked around 14-20 hours a week. I considered taking two or three classes my first semester and then going full time at work as well as at school if I could handle it. After all, I could always study at work, right?

Solo Travel is by no means a unique or new concept. In fact, it is the centre of a very popular culture that is flourishing amongst students, retirees and anyone else willing to strap on boots and a rucksack. I used to study hard every day, confined to my boring campus and waiting for endless classes to begin. After finishing University, my thoughts were a train wreck - a hopeless situation that my happy-go-lucky nature was not accustomed to. I wanted to change it, so I decided to take two years out to go and hit the open road.

Traveling is about the journey, not the destination. The realm of possibility becomes magnified upon leaving our safe havens in favor of the unknown, and that in itself is reason to travel. In fact, I love to travel alone because I think that is a good way to experience the world first-hand. That said, I hate to sightsee alone. There is something special about being able to share a beautiful scene with somebody – somehow, it makes the experience more real. But when travelling, I enjoy being alone. I had some very special times, in the middle of nowhere, on the side of a quiet country road, just walking along and talking to myself. Although after a while I would start to pray for a car to pick me up… I fell in love with the open road, the utter newness of each experience, the wind against my face, the high-pitched rumble of a bus engine as it meandered along backcountry roads.

In the 21st century we have to classify everything to show that we are educated and have culture and knowledge. Yet why should we classify an emotion as powerful as love?

From my point of view university is the best place to experience one's first taste of love. The student couple are both adults, both educated, and hopefully both know what's wrong and what's right. Both of them are responsible for themselves. Sam and I met through my university roommate. Although it was not love at first sight for me, I think Sam fell for me straight off the bat. To my great annoyance, he kept staring at me and telling me \"You have beautiful eyes\" all night long. Even then, it just didn't do it for me. Though Sam was utterly charming and really cute, I wasn't interested. First of all, he was kind of a wild child, with a motorbike, punk clothes and a penchant for bad music. Secondly, he was two years younger than me. I knew he was 18 years old, yet that first time we met – and for a few weeks after – he insisted he was 20.

What was it about his \"bad boy image\" that attracted me to him? For years, I had pored over my books just to get excellent grades but for what? University is supposed to be fun. I wanted to have fun. The moral of this story? Be adventurous at University, because there is more to life than just studying. For us, graduation loomed the next year. We graduated together, moved to Beijing together, and if I have my way he'll be mine forever.

BT:你能簡單介紹什么是職業(yè)規(guī)劃嗎?
V:概括的說職業(yè)規(guī)劃就是一個(gè)人對一生的各階段所從事的工作、職務(wù)或職業(yè)發(fā)展道路進(jìn)行設(shè)計(jì)和規(guī)劃。它可能包括很多因素:個(gè)人興趣愛好、教育背景情況、組織機(jī)構(gòu)提供的發(fā)展環(huán)境、行業(yè)社會(huì)給予的支持和限制。由于這些條件不同,即使是相同專業(yè)的同學(xué)也會(huì)出現(xiàn)完全不同的職業(yè)前景。
BT:很多大學(xué)生從大一開始為自己做職業(yè)規(guī)劃,你覺得大學(xué)生是否應(yīng)該盡早為自己的事業(yè)做打算?你認(rèn)為大學(xué)生做兼職對未來就業(yè)來說能提升個(gè)人競爭力嗎?
V:在工作中,做事目標(biāo)明確的員工會(huì)受到老板的賞識(shí),但由于大學(xué)生對行業(yè)和專業(yè)都仍然陌生,所以剛上大學(xué)就做職業(yè)規(guī)劃是不切實(shí)際的。
參加社會(huì)實(shí)踐活動(dòng)對于增加人生閱歷有很大幫助,但學(xué)生一定要分清主次,尤其剛剛進(jìn)入大學(xué)的同學(xué)應(yīng)以學(xué)業(yè)為主。我接觸過很多剛進(jìn)入職場的年輕人,他們都有這樣的體會(huì):“大學(xué)時(shí)做的大部分兼職都不能對現(xiàn)在的工作起到直接的幫助作用”。也許有些同學(xué)會(huì)說“課堂學(xué)的知識(shí)都太理論,不能幫助解決實(shí)際工作中的問題”,確實(shí)有這樣的矛盾存在,因?yàn)榇髮W(xué)教育的目的是為學(xué)生建立起基礎(chǔ)的專業(yè)知識(shí),并培養(yǎng)他們發(fā)現(xiàn)問題,解決問題的能力。這就像交給你一件好用的工具,但你必須事先掌握使用它的方法,只有這樣才能更高效,更游刃有余地使用它解決各種問題。所以,建議同學(xué)們不要急于做各種兼職工作,應(yīng)專注于充分吸收知識(shí),培養(yǎng)獨(dú)立學(xué)習(xí)的能力,力求最大程度的豐富自己、開闊自己,只有這樣才能避免“書到用時(shí)方恨少”的遺憾,在今后的工作中發(fā)揮最強(qiáng)有力的競爭優(yōu)勢。另外,優(yōu)良的成績和在知名企業(yè)實(shí)習(xí)的經(jīng)驗(yàn)都能為你的簡歷畫上點(diǎn)睛之筆。
BT:您能給喜歡參加社會(huì)實(shí)踐活動(dòng)的同學(xué)一些建議嗎?
V:當(dāng)然,在學(xué)習(xí)允許的前提下參加社會(huì)實(shí)踐活動(dòng)也能幫助同學(xué)更清楚的認(rèn)知自己。奧運(yùn)會(huì)、殘奧會(huì)、世貿(mào)等大型活動(dòng)在中國舉行都給大學(xué)生提供了很多參與社會(huì)活動(dòng)的機(jī)會(huì),這不僅能豐富大學(xué)生活,如果同學(xué)能借此機(jī)會(huì)多接觸行業(yè)內(nèi)的專業(yè)人士,找到自己的不足和差距,從而進(jìn)行職業(yè)定位確立奮斗的方向,這也不失為很大的收獲。但要提醒大家,參加社會(huì)活動(dòng)一定要有所選擇,不能以犧牲學(xué)業(yè)為代價(jià)。
BT:大學(xué)生在畢業(yè)后會(huì)有不同的出路:考研、留學(xué),工作還有創(chuàng)業(yè)。你對這些有什么看法?尤其是現(xiàn)在80后的創(chuàng)業(yè)風(fēng)潮,還有很多典型的成功例子。
V:我們經(jīng)常羨慕媒體上宣傳的那些成功創(chuàng)業(yè)的同齡人;或期望自己也能享受世界知名大學(xué)濃郁的學(xué)習(xí)氣氛;或因?yàn)橥斑M(jìn)入500強(qiáng)外企而不服氣。創(chuàng)業(yè)、高學(xué)歷、去海外留學(xué)是很多人的夢想,但每個(gè)人的實(shí)力、財(cái)力、能力都不相同,所以不要一味套用別人的經(jīng)歷。
至于成功創(chuàng)業(yè),并不像我們看到的那么簡單,它不但要有經(jīng)濟(jì)上的支持,良好的創(chuàng)業(yè)平臺(tái)、不可替代性的產(chǎn)品、專業(yè)的技術(shù)和人才,以及可遇不可求的機(jī)遇,還要有強(qiáng)大的個(gè)人意志力以及承受力,如果因?yàn)閯?chuàng)業(yè)不順利造成心理陰影,影響未來的職業(yè)發(fā)展就不值得了,所以我建議如果沒有充分的準(zhǔn)備不要輕易嘗試個(gè)人創(chuàng)業(yè)。同學(xué)們無論留學(xué)、考研、工作或者自己創(chuàng)業(yè),應(yīng)從個(gè)人條件出發(fā),本著客觀、理性的原則,制定適合自己的發(fā)展規(guī)劃,切忌盲目跟從他人的選擇。
BT:你的大學(xué)生活是怎樣的。對大多數(shù)學(xué)生來說“畢業(yè)就意味著失業(yè)”你能不能結(jié)合自己的例子談?wù)劥髮W(xué)生在就業(yè)前如何要避免走彎路,事先應(yīng)該做怎樣的“準(zhǔn)備工作”?
V: 我自己的專業(yè)是貿(mào)易,順利畢業(yè)后就開始從事人力資源的工作。在大學(xué)期間,我已經(jīng)大致確定了自己的發(fā)展方向:進(jìn)外企。所以我將大部分精力放在提高英語水平上,并且積極參加各種實(shí)踐活動(dòng),也就是在這些活動(dòng)中,我發(fā)現(xiàn)自己比較擅于和人打交道,所以畢業(yè)后我選擇了人力資源行業(yè)。我覺得大部分同學(xué)在大學(xué)期間可能不能明確自己的職業(yè)目標(biāo),這沒關(guān)系,可以一邊工作一邊慢慢摸索,但建議大家選擇自己喜歡的職業(yè),只有這樣才能調(diào)動(dòng)起最大的積極性。
BT:學(xué)生們經(jīng)常會(huì)對未來感到茫然。那么對他們來說怎樣才能確立明確的目標(biāo)呢?
V: 職業(yè)發(fā)展是一個(gè)長遠(yuǎn)計(jì)劃,很多人在一畢業(yè)或者甚至在大學(xué)時(shí)間就明確了自己的職業(yè)目標(biāo)和未來發(fā)展計(jì)劃,但這畢竟是少數(shù)人。大多數(shù)人都是在工作一段時(shí)間后才逐漸清晰,即使是剛才說的那些早早確定的人也是通過一系列社會(huì)實(shí)踐活動(dòng)才明確目標(biāo)的,這實(shí)際上都肯定了一句話“實(shí)踐出真知”。我個(gè)人也是如此,畢業(yè)就希望很快工作,建議同學(xué)們不用著急,通過工作了解自己的長處,并且慢慢彌補(bǔ)不足。
BT:你覺得大學(xué)生最需要改進(jìn)的是什么?在你接觸過的在所有案例中對有沒有你印象深刻的?
V:自視甚高,行動(dòng)力較差,好高騖遠(yuǎn)是很多年輕人的通病。我曾經(jīng)面試過一個(gè)學(xué)生讓我印象深刻,他是一所名牌大學(xué)的碩士研究生,在學(xué)校是有名的“才子”,無論教育背景、個(gè)人素質(zhì)、英文水平都很不錯(cuò),對于工作似乎也有獨(dú)到“見解”,但是當(dāng)我給他一個(gè)小測試,讓他用自己的方式找到某外資銀行行長的姓名及聯(lián)絡(luò)方式時(shí),他卻不能完成這個(gè)連中專畢業(yè)生都能輕而易舉完成的任務(wù)。在很多外企或大型企業(yè)中都有類似的測試,但是因?yàn)槿狈?dòng)手能力,加上對社會(huì)認(rèn)識(shí)不夠,應(yīng)聘者往往面對實(shí)際操作不知如何下手。
當(dāng)然,當(dāng)代大學(xué)生也有前輩們所無法比擬的優(yōu)勢,他們充滿激情,具有國際化的視野,思維開闊,反應(yīng)接受新鮮事物速度快,學(xué)習(xí)能力也很強(qiáng)。最后我還是接受了那個(gè)名牌大學(xué)的學(xué)生,我覺得經(jīng)過引導(dǎo)和栽培他還是很有潛力的,果然,現(xiàn)在他是已經(jīng)是我們公司的Top Sales了。所以,對于剛進(jìn)公司的新人,無論什么背景我們一定要讓他從基層做起,一方面是讓新人充分了解公司的運(yùn)作情況,熟悉各項(xiàng)業(yè)務(wù);另一方面也是磨煉他們能力的過程。
BT:學(xué)生對企業(yè)的要求以及企業(yè)對學(xué)生的預(yù)期間的差距應(yīng)該如何對待?
V: “供大于求”是當(dāng)下求職的現(xiàn)狀。尤其對于處在起步階段的求職者來說,不要總想自己要收獲什么,而是更多放眼于我能為企業(yè)貢獻(xiàn)什么;不要把目標(biāo)定得過于“遠(yuǎn)大”,只有從基層做起,扎扎實(shí)實(shí)工作,慢慢積累各方面的能力,才能最快最大效益的提升自身價(jià)值。

1. Answer the question, \"Why am I going to university?\"

Many university students really don't have a clear reason for being there other than the fact that they don't know what else to do yet. They inherit goals from family and peers which aren't truly their own. What are you there to learn? What do you want to experience?

Once you know why you're going to university, imagine your ideal outcome. Whether you've already started university or not, stop and simply write down some attributes of your ideal experience. Describe it in as much detail as you can. Real life will of course turn out differently than you visualize. The point of visualization is to give you more clarity for making decisions right now.

3. Take at least one extra class each semester.

The real benefit to a dense schedule isn't that you'll graduate sooner. The real benefit is that you'll enjoy a richer experience. This sort of thing sure looks great on a resume.

4. Set clear goals for each class.

Decide what you want out of each specific class. Sometimes you'll achieve your goals; sometimes you won't. Even if you do your best, you may still fall short. You'll have to pick your battles. Some are worth fighting; others are best ignored.
考慮決定好你想從每個(gè)課程里得到什么。有時(shí)你會(huì)達(dá)到你的目標(biāo),有時(shí)不會(huì)。盡管你盡力了,但你有可能仍然失敗。你要選擇你的戰(zhàn)場。有些值得戰(zhàn)斗,有些完全可以忽略。

You don't need to put an equal amount of effort into every class. Inject extra effort when it's important to you, but feel free to back off a little from classes that are a low priority based on your specific goals.

6. Get an early start to each day.

Getting an early start each day helped you get a lot more done, not just in the morning but throughout the day.

7. Reclaim wasted time during your classes.
充分利用課堂時(shí)間
Not every class is going to require your utmost concentration. Sometimes teachers babble. Sometimes they reiterate what you already know. If a class is really challenging, sit in the front and soak up every word. But if a class isn't challenging you, then sit in the back, do homework for other classes, and pop your head up every once in a while to see if there's anything worth jotting down.
不是每一節(jié)課都需要你全神貫注。有時(shí)老師只是在東扯西拉,有時(shí)只是在重復(fù)你已經(jīng)知道的東西。如果這節(jié)課很有意思,那么坐在前面,仔細(xì)聽每一個(gè)字。如果很無聊,那么坐在后面完成其它學(xué)科的家庭作業(yè)吧,當(dāng)然,每隔一會(huì)要抬頭聽聽是不是有什么值得記下來。
8. Learn material the very first time it's presented.
拒絕重復(fù)學(xué)習(xí)
One of the biggest time wasters in school is having to relearn something you didn't learn properly the first time.When students say they're studying, most of the time they're making up for a previous failure to learn the material.
學(xué)校里最大的一個(gè)時(shí)間浪費(fèi)就是不斷重新學(xué)習(xí)你在第一次沒有完全掌握的東西。學(xué)生們說他們在學(xué)習(xí)時(shí)大部分的時(shí)間都是在重復(fù)以前的錯(cuò)誤。
9. Master advanced memory techniques.
科學(xué)記憶
One of the keys to learning material the first time is to train yourself in advanced memory techniques. I don't recommend memorizing by repetition because it's way too slow.
學(xué)習(xí)的關(guān)鍵之一就是掌握科學(xué)的記憶方法。不推薦重復(fù)記憶,因?yàn)樘珱]有效率了。
10. Have some serious fun!
享受生活
Challenge yourself academically, but give yourself plenty of time for fun as well.Don't squander your leisure time hanging around doing nothing.

1. burst with
意為“突然發(fā)生、充滿”,在文中的意思為“充滿”,表示裝得滿滿的、快要爆裂開,形容知識(shí)在這個(gè)世界的無所不在。

3. wide-eyed
意為“睜大眼睛的、吃驚的”。一般用來形容一個(gè)人看見自己意外之外的事物時(shí)的驚訝。它也有“狂暴的、天真的”的意思。
例句:She was wide-eyed and innocent, and had no idea what to expect next.
她睜大了無辜的雙眼,完全不知道會(huì)發(fā)生什么事。
4. emerge out of
意為“從某某中顯現(xiàn)”。
例句:When a caterpillar emerges from its cocoon, it becomes a butterfly.

5. up-and-down
意為“上上下下、起伏的、變動(dòng)的”。在文中用來形容大學(xué)生活的變化無常。

6. in earnest
意為“真誠的、發(fā)自內(nèi)心的、認(rèn)真的”。
例句:Is what you're in earnest?

7. hang out

11. foot the bill
相當(dāng)于pay a bill,foot的意思是 “一只腳”,而bill在這兒的解釋是“賬單”。Foot the bill并不是把帳單踩在腳底下,而是付賬的意思。

他要負(fù)責(zé)這筆損害賠償金。
12. happy-go-lucky
意為“偶然的、無憂無慮、隨遇而安的”,在文中用來形容個(gè)性樂觀。
例句:She became an happy- go- lucky person after this experience.
