Plot Synopsis
Part One: Huai Rou Getaway
Lily: (huffing and puffing) Are we there yet?
Casanova: I'd say we're about a third of the way up.
Lily: A third?! You've got to be kidding.
Sabrina: Quit whining Lily! I haven't exercised since my third trimester and I'm still going.
Lily: I can't believe I let you guys talk me into this. I hate hiking! Didn't a tourist recently fall off the Wall and die?
James: Oh come on, you can do it!
Lily: Look, pass me, okay, I don't want to set the pace for you guys.
。
Sabrina: It's alright hon, you take your time.
Lily: (irritably) No, seriously, I'd rather I was at the end and you all went off without me.
Casanova: (making a mock sad face) Oh poor Lily, all alone in the woods and all her friends have abandoned her…
Sabrina: (under her breath) Best not aggravate her too much, Cass…h(huán)ey Elena, are you alright?Haven't heard you speak in a while.
James: Yeah, it's usually so hard to make you shut up!
Elena: You shut up. I don't feel so good.
Casanova: Are you okay babe?
Elena: I think I just need sugar, I didn't really have much to eat for breakfast and my body's crashing on me.
Lily: Hey, let's just sit here and hang for a bit. I seriously need a break.
Casanova: Well, I'll stay with you then. (to Sabrina and James) You guys go on, we'll catch up with you soon.
Sabrina: Alright. Let's go, James! Gotta knock some of these extra pregnancy pounds off!
Sabrina: It's so nice out here. It's great to get some fresh air. I'm really glad you guys convinced me to come out.
James: Yeah, we figured you could use some time to yourself!
Sabrina: You know, now that I've had the baby, I'm not sure how much longer I'd want to be living right in the middle of a big city, caught up in the rat race. I mean, I really wish that Qingzhe were here right now, experiencing the trees and the air and even the little bugs.
James: Yeah, my goal eventually is to move to a beautiful place with lots of space and live a slower-paced life. Maybe a ranch somewhere, with acres of land, and dogs, and horses.
Sabrina: That sounds wonderful.
James: Yeah, if I make my first million by the time I'm in my mid-thirties! Maybe we should all invest in a villa out in the suburbs together, and spend our retirement years bickering with each other.
Sabrina: (laughing) Like we were doing back there? Awesome.
James: (putting on a wobbly, high-pitched old grandmother's voice) \"I still haven't forgiven you for leaving us there when we were hiking the Great Wall…\"
Sabrina: Hahahaha! Oh my god, it's Lily as an old woman!
James: \"I told you I didn't like hiking.\" (putting on a gruff, old man voice) \"I told you to stay in the car, you old hag.\" \"You should have carried me up, if you'd been half a gentleman.\" \"Shut your pie-hole, and go get me some soup! \"
Sabrina: (laughing uncontrollably) Oh my god, it's like watching someone with multiple personalities.
James: Seriously, I can see us all living together in one big house, and we'd all be old, although Lily would look twenty years younger than the rest of us because of all the weird plastic surgery…
Sabrina: Hahahahahaha.
James: Casanova would be on his fifth wife, and he'd have the downstairs room because both his hips had to be replaced from all the geriatric sex he's having…
Sabrina: (still laughing) Oh no! Poor Elena.
James: Meanwhile, Elena would be this super-hot old minx who doesn't give a shit about Casanova anymore because she's onto bigger and younger things – if you know what I mean. (wiggles his eyebrows)
Sabrina: Eeeeeeww! And what about me?
James: Well, you would…
Sabrina: Ouch! Christ!!
James: Are you alright?! What happened?!
Sabrina: (grumpily) Yeah, my foot just slipped out from under me.
James: Ouch, your knee is bleeding.
Sabrina: Oh geez. It's not a big deal, just a little scrape.
James: Here, sit over here where it's flatter. I think I have a Band-Aid on me.
James: This'll work. .
Sabrina: Thanks.
James: It should be fine by tomorrow, so long as we keep it clean. I've trained in first aid before so I should know!
Lily: Oh my god! Look at the view here!
Elena: Gorgeous.
Casanova: Was it worth the effort, ladies?
Lily: Oh, for sure. Besides, it wasn't that bad.
Elena: (jumping up and down childishly) Woooooo! Hey guys!
Casanova: Sweetheart, don't do that. What if you fell over! I wouldn't want to lose my angel in a freak accident.
Lily: (laughing) We'll both have to hang on to your arms so you don't fly over the edge!
Lily: Hey Sab, did you take a spill? James, I guess you'll have to keep a hold of her until we get back to the lodge!
Sabrina: Thanks, James, I'll be fine.

Part Two: A Night of Horror
Elena: Nice! Nothing like a really fresh piece of fish.
Lily: What do you guys want to do now?
Casanova: I vote for opening another bottle of wine, and then some poker. 100 kuai buy-in.Anyone game?
Elena: Blaaaaaah, this is no fun, I keep losing and having to buy in again and again.
Casanova: That's because your tactics are wild and erratic, sweetheart.
Elena: Yeah, so? It's supposed to confuse you all.
Sabrina: (laughing) I think you're the one that's getting confused, hon.
Elena: Humph.
Elena: Hey guys, let's quit playing and go out for a night stroll. Who knows what kind of creepy things are out there in the dark…?
James: I don't know about that, it's all a little too \"Blair Witch\" for my liking. Besides, it's really dangerous to go out there in the dark without the right equipment. We don't even have a flashlight on us.
Casanova: He might be right, Elena, it's too risky.
Elena: Geez, I just wanted to have a little fun. I thought we could sit somewhere and tell ghost stories…
Lily: Eeew, no thanks! Not a fan of the occult.
Sabrina: (giggling) Hey Elena, if you like ghost stories, you should get Zhang Zhen to tell you one.
Casanova: (jealously) Who's this Zhang Zhen guy then?
Sabrina: Oh, he used to host this TV show that, like, followed supernatural occurrences sent in by viewers. It was really popular. So say someone called in and claimed to know about a haunted house, he'd go and investigate. But he recently died under mysterious circumstances…
Lily: Oh god, stop.
Sabrina: And some say he was led to his death by the spirits that he spoke of so often on his show…
James: Brrr!
Casanova: (jokingly) Well, I've seen plenty of those Chinese horror movies, and I've got to say, all those girl ghosts in the movies are pretty hot. Not like the bloody old hags you see in Western horror movies, right James?
Elena: Well, that's because you've never seen a real ghost before.
Sabrina: (patting Elena's hair) Have you ever seen a real ghost, sweetie?
Elena: I can imagine what it would be like!
James: You know what I always think is so interesting is the difference in Chinese and Western horror movies in the way they depict ghosts. You know what I mean? Like in the Chinese ones…
Casanova: (interrupting) Yeah, they're more realistic, like real people. There's a lot less of the blood and gore, and the headless zombie kind of thing.
Lily: Yeah, like Chinese ghost stories are a lot more, like, creepy.
Sabrina: A lot of them have a revenge theme going, like the ghost is out to kill someone that did them wrong when they were alive, that type of thing.
James: But then there are plenty of others where it just seems like an evil spirit is out to get everyone, just because they happened to move into their house, or saw a tape, or something.
Lily: You mean \"The Ring\"? That's Japanese you goof!
James: Yeah, but you know what I mean. And all those horror movies that have been a hit in the West recently are Asian imports. \"The Ring\", \"The Grudge\"…
Elena: (whispering) You better go and check on that
Sabrina and Elena: Aaaaaaahh!!
Xiao Qiang and Paul: Surprise!!

Part Three: Sabrina's Uncertainty
Sabrina: (thinking to herself) Maybe Elena and Lily were right…I never thought of James in a romantic way before, but I can't deny the chemistry we had in Huai Rou…so weird though, it came out of nowhere. Maybe it's just because I've been feeling vulnerable lately – I have to face it, I love having Qing Zhe in my life, but it makes me worry about the future and how I'll cope with being a single mother as he gets older…
Sabrina: Hello?
Lily: Hi, hon!
Sabrina: Oh hey. What's up?
Lily: So what was going on with you and James the other day, when we went hiking?
Sabrina: What? What do you mean, \"what went on\"?
Lily: Oh stop being coy. There was something in the air, I could feel it.
Sabrina: Alright, alright. Well, it's not a big deal…
Lily: I knew it! I knew you guys were meant to get together!
Sabrina: Wait a minute, I haven't said anything yet! So when you guys came up, I had just sorta fallen down and scraped myself, and James just helped me clean the scrape and put a Band-Aid on it. That's all.
Lily: That's all?! What are you, kindergarteners?
Sabrina: He was really nice about it. And…we kind of had a moment.
Lily: A moment? Be more specific. Was it a romantic moment?
Sabrina: Well…kind of. It was one of those weird movie moments where the sun was shining behind his head and it looked like he had a glow. And he was being so concerned for me, and…I don't know. I think it was just a moment of weakness, to be honest, because I've been so worried about how I'm going to cope with being a single mother. I shouldn't latch onto the first guy who's nice to me because I'm lonely, you know?
Lily: Sweetie, I don't think you should just dismiss these feelings you obviously have for James.I've always been a big fan of James.
Sabrina: Yes, yes, you've made that veeeery clear.
Lily: And with good reason! The guy is crazy about you! And I'm not the only one who thinks so, Elena thinks so too, and I know that my word doesn't always mean much because I'm Miss Flaky but you should take Elena's word for it.
Sabrina: That's uncharacteristically insightful of you – so you do realise that you're flaky.
Lily: Oh, shush. Anyway…think about it.
Sabrina: (thinking to herself) I don't know…I still think my feelings for James are basically just friendly feelings. And knowing that he likes me, I shouldn't take advantage of him now just because I'm lonely. That would be awful for both of us in the end.
Sabrina: Ow!
Ayi: Eh? What's going on in there?
Sabrina: Shit, I've just burned myself and now there's glass all over the floor!
Ayi: (running into the kitchen) Goodness, how did this happen? (shooing Sabrina away) Go sit down, and I'll clear this up in no time. Don't step on the glass!
Ayi: There you go. Just put some of this on so you don't scar.
Sabrina: Thanks, ayi. I'm sorry I'm such a klutz.
Ayi: What's going on with you then? You seem so distracted lately.
Sabrina: Oh, it's nothing, just girly stuff, I don't want to moan about it.
Ayi: Come on now, I know I'm just some woman from the sticks to you, but if it's \"girly stuff\" then we're all the same, aren't we? Why don't you try me? The way I see it, a woman's got three major milestones to achieve in her lifetime – fall in love, get married and have a baby. All you've got left to do is get married! Then your life will be perfect.
Sabrina: Um, I guess so…
Ayi: What's wrong with this fella of yours then, doesn't want to buy the cow, wants the milk for free?
Sabrina: Hahahahaha! Oh my god, he would be mortified if he knew you said that about him. No, the baby's father and I are… it's complicated.
Ayi: Nothing complicated about it, if you ask me. You've already had the baby. Now it's time to make it official, by walking down the aisle.
Sabrina: Well, we weren't like that… the baby was kind of an accident, really.
Ayi: Nothing is ever an accident. You two were obviously meant to have that baby, otherwise it wouldn't have happened.
Sabrina: (laughing) I wish I shared your conviction, ayi. (thinking to herself) Thank god she doesn't know that Paul is the father, I don't know what she would say next time he came over!

Part Four: And So They Lived…
Casanova: I can't believe how hazy it is out, even at night. Another Corona?
James: (absentmindedly) What? Oh…sure.
Casanova: What is it, Corona not good enough for you? You want a girly cocktail? You want a raspberry margarita? With a little cherry on top, and an umbrella?
James: Yeah, yeah, whatever.
Casanova: What's the matter with you, you're the most boring company ever tonight. Talk to me.
James: Sorry, I know I'm kind of somewhere else. (suddenly leaning forward) It's about Sabrina... we had this \"moment\" when we were hiking.
Casanova: A \"moment\"?
James: Yes, a \"moment\".
Casanova: Look, dude, it's time for you to actually do something about these feelings you've had for her. You've had a moment! You have to go for it! Who cares if goes totally wrong and it all explodes in your face, at least you'll know! But if you don't, you'll always wonder what might have been!
James: I know that, but it's not that easy – Paul is a friend, and I don't want things to get awkward with him.
Casanova: Hey, I know I'm biased because I was your mate first. I was. But take it from me, I've seen the way Paul acts around Sabrina, and they're totally just friends, man. There is no romantic interest there whatsoever. Nada. You wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes!
James: I don't know…
Casanova: Look, Paul would totally want Sabrina to be happy too. How about this – make a move tomorrow, at Qing Zhe's birthday party. Take her aside and tell her how you feel! Or just grab her and kiss her.
Lily: Paul! Help us wash the dishes.
Paul: Eh? (seeing Lily's murderous look) Oh! Yes, of course.
James: Did you hurt your hand?
Sabrina: Oh, yeah, it's nothing. I just burned myself trying to disinfect Qing Zhe's bottle.
James: I can't imagine how tough it must get sometimes. I really admire you for making the decision to have him, and for continuing to make it work. I think you're amazing.
Sabrina: (blushing) Oh, it's not such a big deal. So many people out there do it, the single parent thing.
James: It is a big deal, Sabrina. You don't give yourself enough credit for it.
Sabrina: Well…I try. It's all been a blur since Qing Zhe was born, it's so hard to find time to actually think about everything I'm doing sometimes. (holding up her hand, and laughing ruefully) Which is why this sort of thing happens.
James: I know you're a strong woman, and you have everything under control, but I wish you'd rely on me more sometimes. I want to be here for you.
Sabrina: (tearing up) I can't rely on you. It wouldn't be fair. I know that we had that moment the other day, but what if it was just a moment for me? I'm not in any position right now to be able to judge properly, and I'm so afraid that I'm going to mess up our friendship by being ambivalent.
James: It's okay. I don't want to be another complication for you, I just want to be someone you can turn to when you feel like there's no-one else. I care about you so much, Sabrina; I think you know that already, but I just wanted you to hear it from me. I will always be here for you and the baby, no matter what. I promise you.
Sabrina: Oh, James…you have no idea how much I appreciate you saying that. But right now I'm just not sure…
James: Then let's take it slow, and let's see where this goes naturally.
Sabrina: (smiling tearfully) I think I can agree to that.
James: Can I give you a kiss now?
Elena: Woops!
Sabrina: Oh my god!
Casanova: Get on with it! Kiss her!!
Xiao Qiang: Yeah, do it!
James: Oh, Christ…
Lily: What are you waiting for?!
Paul: Wait, let me get the video camera.
Elena: (wiping away tears of mirth) I'm really happy for you guys.
Lily: Hey, I'm really happy for all of us! We've got it going on! Fulfilling jobs, solid relationships, fantastic friends…
Paul: You're right. Not too shabby.
Xiao Qiang: (in a mock cheerleader tone) Hurray for all of us!
The End
