With computers getting more and more advanced, it's no surprise that the range of peripherals we use to enjoy them are also slowly becoming more and more complicated. With the release of Rock Band 2 for the Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 2, we may have come across the weirdest and most complex collection of controllers yet. For, not content with allowing users to karaoke along to their favourite tracks, Rock Band 2 allows you to thrash, bnash and crash to your heart's content with its unique combination of controllers: a Fender Stratocaster guitar, a full drumkit, a microphone, and more.
To celebrate this fine display of awesomeness and sheer over-the-top gadget wizardry, we look back over nearly thirty years of video games to find the best strangest and most original controllers ever created.
1) The Duck Hunt Gun《
24 years ago a game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was unlike anything seen before. Duck Hunt featured little pixellated waterfowl flying across an 8-bit video screen, and the aim of the game was to shoot as many of the measly mallards as possible. The best thing about the game, though, wasn't the endless slaughter of innocent birds, but the revolutionary controller. Now, for the first time ever, people could point a gun – a real, gun-shaped gun – at the screen, pull the trigger, and be awarded with an electronic \"bang\" (that sounded more like someone standing on an empty plastic bag) and a flurry of digital feathers. Pure, unadulterated class.
2) The Steel Battalion Dashboard Controller《
Stomping around a quasi-apocalyptic landscape in a giant robot, or mecha, and blasting the living hell out of anything else that moves has been a staple of anime fans and video gamers for decades. So, imagine the excitement when, in 2002, Capcom announced the release of Steel Battalion for the Xbox… a game that came with it's own Mecha Dashboard Controller – a 35-inch, 30-button/two joystick beast of a peripheral that included an eject button (which, if not pressed in time would make you lose all your save data) and a whole bunch of other over-the-top and frankly unnecessary functions.
3) The PCGamerBike 跑步機(jī)
Tired of merely pressing buttons to make your video game character move around the screen? Fed up with parents saying that sitting around playing the PC is unhealthy? Then treat yourself to the PCGamerBike, a bizarre contraption that allows you to control your character's movement by pedal power! Be it a racing car, a combat game, or an RPG, the faster you pedal, the faster you move! One of the best examples of the lengths to which fans of the new wave of Exergames will go, the PCGamerBike is both a comedy and a tragedy waiting to happen.
4) The Exus Foot Craz Activity Floorpad
You've all seen the kids in the local arcade, jumping about like lunatics on Dance Dance Revolution machines, accompanied by really cheesy J-pop anthems and mid-90's boy band croonings, but did you know the first pressure-sensitive foot pad was released way back in 1987? A small, short-lived company called Exus created two games for this revolutionary device, Video Jogger and Video Reflex, both of which featured pressure-sensitive buttons, lots of athletic running and jumping, and made a whole generation of computer nerds look truly ridiculous.
5) The Dreamcast Fishing Rod 夢(mèng)想傳播釣魚竿
Truly is nothing that the Japanese won't try to make into a video game. Train-driving simulations? No problem. Games where the main aim is to have sex with girls? Done already. But when Sega released Get Bass on the Dreamcast back in 2004, they seemed to have really hit the bottom of the barrel. Not only was the aim of the game to catch fish, they even provided you with a special rod-shaped controller to help you do it! No more sitting for hours on a muddy river bank in Scotland – now you could sit and do nothing for hours while waiting for a bite… in the comfort of your own home.
