        Erick Peterson's Review

Love and Other Disasters, a vastly underappreciated film, is one of the best romantic comedies of the last few years and will provide satisfying entertainment this Valentines' Day, whether you are cuddling with your sweetie or on your own. The film robs numerous story and filming elements from other romantic comedies. Rather than coming off as derivative, however, the film plays as an uber-entry into the genre, and its star is reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. Love and Other Disasters tells the story of Jacks, a young woman who believes in love despite living her life all wrong. One example of her wrongheadedness: she engages in a casual sex arrangement with her ex-boyfriend. But during the course of the film, through her relationships and those of her friends, she finally comes to a deeper understanding of love.

No one should be intrigued by this simple premise, as it is also the bare bones of many other romantic comedies, and the similarities between this film and many others don't stop with the plot. Jacks has a close group of quirky friends that seem to reappear in a hundred other films. The desperate and eccentric best friend, the lovelorn homosexual, the dashing foreigner, and others all fill out Jacks' inner circle. The viewer can almost picture the screenwriter filling out the boxes on a checklist. Broken wedding at the altar? Check. Rush to the airport to find true love? Check again! By the time the film employs split screens, traditionally used in romantic comedy classics to show both parties on the phone, the viewer is all too aware that the film he is watching is nothing original, nothing unique, but a clear romantic comedy that doesn't try to be something it isn't.

Surprisingly, the film is still watchable, and this is mostly due to the actors' performances. There is, of course, the leading lady, Jacks, played by Brittany Murphy. With long eye-lashes, wide eyes, dark hair, and slender body, she bears a striking resemblance to Hepburn, the queen of such films during a more glittering age in Hollywood. Murphy's straight-talking, sophisticated Jacks is a role that would've suited Hepburn half a century ago. Sexually explicit lines like \"He fills a void- literally,\" and scenes of her sitting on the toilet in front of her roommate (and us!) bring the character into the modern age, however. Other fine performances abound, but the most striking ones are from actors playing bit characters. Michael Lerner is a gas as a Harvey Weinstein-like film producer. Dawn French is nearly as funny, playing a therapist with an odd interest in flatulence. \"Reactions to a fart mark the stages of a relationship,\" she says. None of these characters or performances are particularly believable, but as the film states, \"no one is interested in watching real life.\" Real life is too boring.

Far from an outstanding film, Love and Other Disasters is certainly not a boring one, either. It survives on its performances, and on tongue-in-cheek, urbane comedy that keeps the film from drifting into a sap-fest. In other words, this is a film that appeals to the heart without being too unsettling for the stomach.

        Dialogues

        00:01:09 – 00: 03:46

James: Hey, sleepy head! You up?

        Jacks: What time is it?

        James: Almost noon.

Jacks: I'm afraid you've got to go.

        James: Excuse me?

Jacks: You've got to go. I have friends coming over for brunch.

        James: What? In MY apartment?

        Jacks: Sorry.

James: 3 years and you still treat me like a one-night stand!

(Jacks hurries to meet Talullah at a café)

Jacks: Babies! Sorry, I'm late. I had to deal with James.

Talullah: James? I thought you broke up with James.

Jacks: I did. He's just not taking it very well.

Talullah: What? All alone in his big, empty castle?

Jacks: Be nice. Anyway, I had to give his ego CPR.

Talullah: How tiresome. What did you say?

Jacks: Oh you know, how great he is, how he's going to make the right girl so happy, how it's really not him, it's blah blah blah...

        Talullah: And he believed you?

Jacks: Of course not! So then I had to f**k him.

        Talullah: Right.

        Jacks: Where's Peter?

(Jack is back home and her roommate Peter is taking shower)

Jacks: Babies, we missed you at brunch!

Peter: Sorry, I had to finish 1500 words for Empire.

        Jacks: Talullah sends her love.

        Peter: How is she?

Jacks: In love! With this Jamaican model I set her up with. Apparently, he shags her 4 times a day and inspires her to write volumes of new poetry! Isn't that great?

Peter: No, I hate Talullah's poetry.

Jacks: Speaking of shags, how was your date with Doug?

        Peter: Fine.

        Jacks: Fine? Just fine?

Peter: Look, Jacks! I really appreciate you trying to set me up with Doug and Phil and John.

        Jacks: What's wrong with Doug?

Peter: Nothing, I just... I just don't see much of a future together.

Jacks: How do you know that after one dinner?

Peter: Maybe because we have nothing in common?

Jacks: That's not true. You're an artist, Doug's an artist.

        Peter: Doug's a florist!

        Jacks: He's a horticultural designer.

Peter: Yeah, whose life goal is to create a sculpture of Princess Diana entirely of bougainvillea.

Jacks: You are such a snob!

Peter: I am not a snob! I have hay fever. I'd be allergic to Doug's work. Look, Doug deserves better than me.

Jacks: You're never going to find anyone with that attitude.

Peter: What attitude? I'm just being realistic.

Jacks: If you're realistic, then I'm the Queen of England.

(Peter out of the bathroom naked)

Peter: Hey! I'm the Queen of England!

        Jacks: Hello, your Majesty!

        Language Focus 語言點

        1 CPR

2 I set her up with.

        “set…up with…”

        3 shags

4 then I'm the Queen of England.

        00:21:39 – 00:22:37

Felicity: Oh, Talullah! There you are! This is Klaus Fassbinder. Klaus, this is my daughter Talullah. And this is her best friend, Paul.

        Talullah: It's Peter, Mother!

        Peter: It's all right.

Felicity: Darling, you could have worn something nicer.

Talullah: You could have worn something. Full stop.

Peter: Sorry, Fassbinder, are you related to the director?

        Klaus: Who?

Peter: Oh, never mind. Mrs. Wentworth, thank you so much for this invitation.

Felicity: Oh please! Call me Felicity! David is perfect for you, darling! I can't think why I didn't set you two up earlier!

        Klaus: So, you're Felicity's daughter?

Talullah: Only by birth. So don't hold it against me.

        Felicity: Donatella! Excuse me.

Talullah: Whoever designed those heels must really hate women.

        Klaus: I designed those heels.

Talullah: And thank goodness you did! Otherwise Mother's arse would be dusting the floor.

        00:24:26 – 00:27:24

Felicity: I would like to welcome you all to this year's Fashion Against the lmpending Threat of Global Warming. There is nothing more important right now than global poverty. I mean in the warming sense. Actually, I was just talking to Donatella.

Jacks: Sorry, I'm late. So is he here?

        Peter: Not yet.

        Jacks: Where's Talullah?

Peter: In the bathroom. She's been eating large quantities of hash brownies.

        Jacks: Again?

        Peter: Yeah.

Felicity: So with no further ado, I would like to introduce any available British celebrity! I mean...

        Angus Deaton!

        Angus: Bitch!

        Felicity: Wanker!

Angus: Thank you and thank you to Felicity for all her…

Talullah: Jacks! You look so pretty! I think you're very, very pretty Jacks.

Jacks: Thank you, Talullah. I think you're very pretty too.

Talullah: But not as pretty as Freedom's wife!

Peter: Talullah, I'm sure you're far prettier than Freedom's wife.

Talullah: You're just saying that because you're a POOF!

Felicity: Talullah! What's wrong with you?

        Talullah: Genetics.

        Felicity: Hello, Jones.

        Talullah: It's Jacks, Mother!

        Felicity: You look lovely!

Jacks: Thank you. So do you!

        Felicity: I don't!

Talullah: I'm pasty white. Why wasn't I born black?

Angus: OK, first up then we have an outfit called Ice Dream donated by Klaus Fassbinder! Let's start the bidding. If you would at 1,000 pounds. Thank you, sir.

Felicity: David's flight from New York must have been delayed. But he should be here at any minute. He was very intrigued by what I told him!

Peter: What, what you told him?

Felicity: You know, about how you saw him at the hotel and it was love at first sight! And what a catch you are. How it's about time you found yourself a nice boyfriend!

Peter: You told him all that?

Felicity: He seemed very flattered Paul!

Angus: 1,500 pounds. Any advance on 1,500 pounds? Going once, going twice...

Talullah: 10,000 pounds! 10,000 pounds! (Jacks and Peter pull Talullah's dress) Don't touch the dress!

Angus: Any advance on 10,000 pounds. No? Going once. Going twice! 10,000 pounds!

Talullah: I was only joking. I was just kidding! I was only joking. It was a joke.

        Felicity: (signs a check) Charity!

        Language Focus 語言點

1 You could have worn something. Full stop.

        2 hash brownies

        3 POOF

        4 first up then

5 And what a catch you are.

        00:34:46 – 00:37:14

Peter: I really appreciate you seeing me on such short notice. Finlay thinks the world of you.

Therapist: And I think THE WORLD of Finlay!

Peter: Yes, well... He said you really sorted him out on the relationship front. And I could certainly use some help there. You see I've never actually been in a relationship except in my own head.

Therapist: And how long did that last?

        Peter: What?

Therapist: The relationship in your head.

Peter: No. I mean, it's an ongoing problem. They only last in my head. For varying amounts of time.

Therapist: So you have a problem with monogamy?

Peter: No, not that. No, that's not my problem.

Therapist: Denial is not a river in Egypt! Not a river in Egypt. D'you see what I did there? Just that's a little therapist joke. Doesn't always work. OK, right. Paul?

        Peter: Peter.

        Therapist: Sorry?

        Peter: Peter.

Therapist: Peter. Peter. Yes, it is. You're absolutely right. Peter. That's a good start. Well done you! Ok Peter, I think I can help you.

        Peter: You do?

Therapist: I do. I think you are stuck in that pre-relationship moment of infatuation and you need to be reminded that a real relationship has many, many, many more stages.

        Peter: Stages. I like that.

Therapist: Relationships are best measured by farting.

        Peter: Excuse me?

Therapist: The stages of a relationship can be defined by farting. Stage 1 is the conspiracy of silence. This is a fantasy period where both parties pretend that they have no bodily waste. This illusion is very quickly shattered by that first shy \"ooh did you fart?\" followed by the sheepish admission of truth. This heralds a period of deeper intimacy. A period I like to call the \"fart honeymoon\". Where both parties find each other's gas just the cutest thing in the world. But of course no honeymoon can last forever. And so we reach the critical fork in the fart. Either the fart loses its power to amuse and embarrass, thereby signifying true love, or else it begins to annoy and disgust. Thereby symbolizing all that is blocked and rancid in the formerly beloved. Do you see what I'm getting at?

        Language Focus 語言點

1 Finlay thinks the world of you.

“sb thinks the world of someone”是個固定詞組,意思是“某人對某人有著強烈的敬意和仰慕之情”。

        Behind the Scenes

        Overview

        The Liberation
