How to Quit Your Job Gracefully
Quitting your job might seem like the end of your obligations at the office, but it's crucial to keep your network intact on the way out.
Soften the Blow
Quit midweek - preferably Wednesday, when the work place is sane and the stress levels are not as high as they tend to be earlier in the week. Just don't announce the news on Friday. Your boss may take it personally that you're leaving the company – why ruin her weekend?
Be a Team Player for a Few Weeks
If pressed about why you're quitting, don't give a litany of reasons or air dirty laundry. Instead, tell your boss how much you've learned, and that this is simply the next step for you. Give at least two weeks' notice and hand over all your records and files (but take the Rolodex; you earned those contacts).
Don't Waver
Once you give notice, the mood changes in the office. Some coworkers will be resentful and pile on extra work; others will lavish you with praise. Whatever the situation, don't let it affect your decision, write down your reasons for quitting and refer to that list in moments of self-doubt.
Enjoy the Send-off 享受歡送會
If group drinks are planned in your honor, give a thank-you toast but keep the venting (and gin and tonics) to a minimum. On your last day, compose a brief good-bye email to colleagues with your new contact information. And send a handwritten note to your boss. It's a small gesture that she will appreciate – and remember you by.
