The basic premise of the show is simple. Dr. House heads a team of young diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsborough Hospital in New Jersey. House's Department of Diagnostic Medicine is nationally renowned for handling only the toughest medical cases， cases other doctors have failed to diagnose. Each week， a patient displays a series of complex and inexplicable symptoms which House and his team must correctly identify and treat. The brilliant House grills his team of young charges， using the Socratic method and differential diagnosis to arrive at the correct conclusion. House is usually light-years ahead of the others， frequently pointing out the flaws in their opinions with a glee to be expected of a cynical， pompous jerk. Yet， his diagnoses are invariably correct.

House， albeit a genius diagnostician， is a maverick， frequently bending and sometimes breaking the norms of conventional medical practice in his endeavor to save the lives of his patients. Factors such as emotional and relational ties hardly factor into the equation for him. The truth， the cold hard facts， these seem to be the only standards House values.Although this makes him terribly efficient at his job， it also strains his relationships with his patients， his colleagues， and those he considers to be his friends.

Among those who maintain the sort of awkward， friction-heavy interactions commonplace on the show with House are his team members， Dr. Chase， Dr. Cameron， and Dr. Foreman. Although they maintain a great deal of respect for his medical knowledge， they frequently find themselves at odds with his unorthodox ways of getting things done and the moral ambiguity of many of his decisions. In addition to his team of three， House is frequently exasperating his boss， Dr. Lisa Cuddy， and Dr. James Wilson， Head of the Department of Oncology at Princeton-Plainsborough and the closest thing House has to a friend.

Although structured as a medical drama， the series is heavily character-focused， frequently exploring the complex responses the characters have when faced with moral issues， questions of honesty and integrity， relational problems， etc. Although the language of the series is heavily steeped in medical terminology， the show is by no means inaccessible to the average viewer. Instead， viewers will be sucked in by the complexity of the issues being considered， as well as by the characters' personalities， particularly that of the acerbic and often hilarious Dr. House. Brilliantly written and performed， House is one show you don't want to miss.
