In this humorous and readable memoir of self-discovery and travel, Elizabeth Gilbert embarks on a year-long journey to 3 different countries in search of restoration. In her early 30's and having just experienced a difficult and protracted divorce, Gilbert finds herself in need of some serious soul-searching.After selling her possessions, she takes off to 3 dissimilar destinations: Italy, India, and Indonesia. Each stop on her journey represents a different theme in the process of her recovery. In Italy, Gilbert indulges in the earthly pleasures of good food and drink. Savoring the world's best pizza, exquisite wine, and dashing strangers, Gilbert manages to find some measure of escape from the depression and loneliness of her previous ordeal. Her next stop is India, where she pursues spiritual transcendence through grueling hours of meditation at an ashram. Indonesia is the final leg of her journey, where she attempts to attain some measure of balance in her heart and mind. She studies with a medicine man and finds love with a charming Brazilian businessman. Depression and spiritual fulfillment usually tend to be fairly heavy subjects in literature, but Gilbert manages to keep the whole experience light and enjoyable through her humorous and chatty voice. This book is a great read about a woman's search for faith in a pop-culture world.
