Artist Advises For Scenic River City
By Sun Kan
In September, 2006, the 39-year-old Cen Qi, a Zhejiang-based landscape artist, was engaged as a cultural advisor by the government of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. At an official ceremony, the mayor issued Cen a letter of appointment.
The artist and the city come together for good reasons. Jiujiang is a city on the Yangtze River and sits at the foot of the picturesque Mount Lushan. A commanding look from the peaks can reveal the breathtaking beauty of the river and the distant Poyang Lake extending as far as the horizon. Moreover, the mount is steeped in history and closely connected with big names such as poets and emperors. Some people who love Mount Lushan even go so far as to boast that it is the number one mount in the country in terms of beauty and history. Naturally, the gorgeous mount is a favorite destination and attraction for landscape artists all the country around and Cen Qi is one of those fascinated artists who paint a lot of landscape there.
Not just fascinated. Cen Qi is an accomplished artist. Though the 39-year-old probablycounts as one of the young artists in the country, he has successfully held dozens of sole exhibitions at home and abroad. What is more, Cen is a well known collector of Chinese paintings, including some ancient masterpieces of the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) Dynasties. He has authored a dozen of books on appreciating and authenticating ancient paintings. As a poet, he has published 10 collections of poems. And he has donated paintings worth more than a million yuan to various charity programs.
Cen Qi comes form Cixi, Ningbo in eastern China's Zhejiang Province. He started learning how to paint at an early age. He came to Hangzhou for further studies at the age of 15. He studied under the tutelage of Lu Yifei, a master of Chinese painting.
Mount Lushan is one of his favorite destinations for landscape painting. In an essay about his painting tours in the mount, he comments, “The best way to depict the mount is to highlight its verve and essence. The mount is a perfect combination of the magnificence of the north and the grace of the south. Mountains and waters meet here; clouds and trees merge; waterfalls are magic and you see the sources of streams flowing away; the elements of the nature reveal different perspectives of the mount, making it a world-class cultural landscape.”Since he became a cultural advisor to the city, Cen Qi has spent a lot of time there and taken eight painting trips to the mount. He has donated over 200,000 in cash, proceeds of his painting sales in Beijing, to the Chinese Development Foundation for Youth and he plans to raise money to build a Hope Primary School named after himself.
As for plans for further promoting the cultural undertakings of Jiujiang, Cen reveals that he has invested 10 million yuan into an exchange center for Chinese painting and calligraphy in the riverside city. The 870-square-meter center will soon be staging an exhibition displaying rare ancient masterpieces from private collections. And he will organize a trip for local artists of Jiujiang to travel to other parts of the country and invite art masters to Jiujiang for further exchange activities. Meanwhile, he has an ambitious plan to create 300 paintings about the Mount Lushan and Jiujiang and compose some poems in the hope of promoting the city across the country.
That a Zhejiang-based young artist is now engaged as a cultural advisor for Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province is another sort of cultural exchange at a higher level. His paintings not only promote Jiujiang and Mount Lushan, but also promote the new generation of artists like himself.
