Female Master Paints the West
By Jiang Ye
Li Xiufeng has ancestral roots in Hebei Province in north China, but her fifty years in Gansu Province has turned her into an outstanding artist of China’s wild western essences. In fact, she is one of the few outstanding women artists in China today.
Her parents migrated to the west in the country’s “go west”project in the early 1950s and Li was in the military service herself in the west. China’s west was where the Chinese culture prospered in the remote history and her paintings are reflections of this great west.
Artistically, Li Xiufeng is best known for the way she applies the inky colors which create harmonious contrasts in her traditional-styled modern paintings. The images she paints are forceful and precise, ebullient and soft, massive and flexible and unpredictable, unsophisticated and beautiful, powerful and fine. All this combines to display her sensitivity and mastery as a female artist in Chinese west.
At present, among other titles and art honors, Li is vice president of the Gansu Artists Association, president of the Gansu Academy of Traditional Chinese Paintings.
