My Mentor and Friend Chen Li

        By Wang Jiayang

The year 2007 marks the third anniversary of Chen Li's demise. Chen Li, a psychologist and educator, was my mentor and friend. This article is in his memory.

Chen Li was born on July 22, 1902 in central China's Hunan Province and passed away in Hangzhou on March 18, 2004.

I knew Chen for over 20 years and I regarded him as both my mentor and my friend. Over this long period of time, we saw eye to eye on many important issues and worked together fruitfully. An excellent scholar, he was strict with himself but treated other people generously and warm-heartedly. In my memory, the past with him is just like yesterday: he spoke earnestly on important issues at the CPPCC sessions and took pains to write proposals; he paid visits to professors on important days; he presented a carefully written agenda to guide the development of the Shuren University; and he swam at the age of 98, showing his great vitality.

After the fall of the Gang of the Four in 1976, the so-called revolutionary committees that had ruled higher education institutions across the country were eliminated and presidents were appointed. In May, 1978, I was transferred from Beijing to Hangzhou to work as director of the publicity department of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and as the president of the Hangzhou University. It was during this time that I came to know Chen Li. At a few workshops, he condemned the nightmarish practices of the Cultural Revolution and made proposals to put the university back on the right track. He contributed a great deal to the work of redressing the wrongdoings at the university.

The Cultural Revolution had trampled intellectuals. During that time, most leading posts were held by people whose academic background was definitely negligible. After the chaos, the presence of these leaders at the universities in the province was deterring the full recovery and future development of higher education. Chen and I agreed on this observation. I made suggestions to the CPC Zhejiang Committee, saying that it was imperative to appoint outstanding scholars to head universities. My proposal was adopted. Of the scholars who came to head higher education institutions in the province, Chen Li was appointed the president of Hangzhou University.

Chen did quite a lot in putting the university back on the right track. At that time, part of the mission of the university was to cultivate middle school teachers. Chen emphasized the importance of basic academic training so as to send best prepared graduates to teaching posts across the city.

Chen gave priority to the departments of tourism, economics, finance and psychology. He saw the importance of giving full play to the initiative of scholars. He rehabilitated Chen Xuezhao who had been designated as a \"rightist\" in the late 1950s. He recommended many outstanding scholars in 1983 to important posts. Xue Yanzhuang, director of the scientific research department, was later appointed to the presidency of the university.

When I was in charge of setting up and running the Shuren University, Chen helped me a great deal. His education philosophy has been a key to the success of the university. As a member of the board of directors for the university in three terms, he attended every meeting and made valuable suggestions. In 1994, he wrote me a long letter on the guidelines he believed the university should follow.

We visited each other during the last years of his life. He visited me during the Spring Festival when he was 100 years old. We chatted freely, but the focus of our conversation was education. The most interesting topic was the new Zhejiang University as the result of the merge of four universities in Hangzhou. Chen said he hoped the merge would make the sharing of education resources possible and produce more talents for the country.

Chen was a man of simple life. His apartment was quite small when he headed the Hangzhou University. The sitting room was no more than 6 square meters large and his study was 4 square meters large. One of his sons was out of formal employment for a long while and had to work as a temporary. Chen never asked any of his friends for help on this issue.

As a scientist and educator, Chen was a man of modesty, ideal, and sacred thought. He left a spiritual wealth to this world, which encourages people to follow his footsteps.
