        word-a-day:

        browbeat 逼迫(及物動詞)

        (transitive verb) To pester and threaten in a dominating manner.

        EXAMPLE: The cynical executive believed his employees would notwork unless he browbeat them relentlessly, but that only caused themto leave his company.

        這位疑心很重的高管認(rèn)為,他不逼迫員工,他們就不會干活。但這只會讓員工們離職。

        cloudburst 大暴雨(名詞)

        (noun) A sudden, heavy downpour of rain, usually lasting only a fewminutes.

        EXAMPLE: A cloudburst interrupted our pleasant walk in the park, andwe ran inside a small nearby shelter.

        collide 1. 猛烈地撞擊(不及物動詞);2. 發(fā)生沖突(不及物動詞)

        1. (intransitive verb) To crash together violently.

        EXAMPLE: When the driver fell asleep, his truck collided with a smallcar and overturned it.

        2. (intransitive verb) To come into con_lict.

        EXAMPLE: During my childhood, my gentle mother's kind opinionsoften collided with my father's stern ideas.

        grandiose 華麗的(形容詞)

        (adjective) Describing something designed to be so excessivelyimpressive that it actually looks silly instead of great or important.

        EXAMPLE: My rich uncle's grandiose new house has so manyunnecessary mirrors and huge golden sculptures inside that it looksridiculous.

        redundant 1. 不需要的(形容詞);2. 被裁掉的(形容詞,商業(yè)用語)

        1. (adjective) Describing something unnecessary; super_luous.

        EXAMPLE: With the widespread adoption of new technologies, certainjob skills became redundant.

        2. (adjective, BUSNIESS) Dismissed from work due to no longer beingneeded. (NOTE: chie_ly British usage)

        EXAMPLE: The large store hires extra sales representatives for theholiday gift buying season, but they are redundant after the big holidays.

        A possibility of succeeding in spite of serious challenges.

        EXAMPLE: Traf_ic is always congested at this busy time of day, but ifwe leave immediately we still have a _ighting chance of getting to theairport in time for our _light.

        (SLANG) Something very popular; also, less commonly, a very popular person.(NOTE: while the phrase is singular, it can refer to multiple related items)

        EXAMPLE: For a number of reasons, electric vehicles nowadays are ahot ticket item.

        電動汽車現(xiàn)在是熱門產(chǎn)品,原因有很多。

        straight as an arrow正直(成語)

        (IDIOM) Honest; sincere; describing a person who is completely free ofdeception.

        EXAMPLE: I can always trust my brother because I know he is straightas an arrow.

        我可以永遠(yuǎn)相信我的兄弟,因?yàn)槲抑浪麡O為正直。
