(1)On culturalmaterialism: a branch of Marxism

        WANG Zhong ling ·5·

Cultural materialism proposed by Raymond Williams grew out of the cultural commodification in advanced capitalist societies. It challenges Marx’s theory of the superstructure and economic base and advocates the restoration of a complete social material process, particularly the need to restore cultural production as a social and material process. In other words, it rejects the distinction between mental and material production. Some argue that Williams’ theory is flawed. Firstly, it is deemed that people cannot engage in other forms of production before their basic needs for clothing, food, and shelter are met. Secondly, unlike the material nature of economic production and its products, cultural production’s functionality is inherently spiritual and therefore inevitably carries explicit or implicit ideological elements. These two points are precisely what Williams seems unwilling to acknowledge. Thirdly, Williams fails to understand that the industrialization of culture is in essence the industrialization of the material carriers of culture. During the process, the spiritual nature of culture products goes unchanged. Fourth, Williams perceives cultural production as a social and material process, but he neglects the independence and continuity of ideology. This flaw becomes immediately obvious when he applies the theory to literature and tries to explain his literary views.

(2)Wang Yangmin’s theory on the unity of conscience and the way of heaven

        FU Xi hong ·20·

Wang Yangming not only considers the conscience (liangzhi) as the criterion of good and evil and the ability to discern between them, but also develops the idea of the unity of heaven and man from Confucian philosophers such as Zhou Lianxi, Cheng Mingdao, and Lu Xiangshan in the Song Dynasty. He believes that the conscience is the same as the way of heaven, and vice versa. This means that the conscience is not exclusively individual but can also refer to the way of heaven. The former is just the manifestation of the latter in a person. The ultimate significance of the unity of conscience and the way of heaven is to illustrate that a person can not only be free from worries but can also be carefree even in the face of difficulties. The greatest benefit of cultivating conscience is to be at ease and joyful, like the way of heaven, which, although giving birth to all things, does so naturally without feeling pressure or burden. This is already the greatest happiness that everyone can potentially attain, and it should be used to encourage people to develop their conscience.

(3)A Reflection on “cancel culture” from the perspective of new media

        ZHENG Gen cheng ·29·

“Cancel culture” has become increasingly popular these years. Supporters argue that it a weapon for the disadvantaged to express disapproval of discriminatory or biased speech on social media platforms. Opponents, particularly the social elites, believe that it isreduced to mass shaming which threatens freedom and encourages violence as well. Against the backdrop of new media, this indicates a trend in the public expression in decentralized communication and also the devirtualization in the cyberspace. As a driving force for the construction of culture, new media technology is closely associated with given cultures. Its rapid developmentmasks the risks it has caused such as privacy infringement, human flesh search and cyber bullying.

(4)Impact of synergistic agglomeration of logistics and manufacturing industries on regional economic resilience: evidence from the provincial panel data in China

CHENG Liang hua, WANG Hao jun, SU Xiao ·38·

Promoting the deep integration and spatial synergistic agglomeration of the logistics and manufacturing industries (referred to as the “two industries”) is of great significance for enhancing regional economic resilience through industrial digital transformation, intelligent upgrading, and dynamic supply chain matching. This study first establishes a theoretical framework and then explores the theoretical mechanisms by which the synergistic agglomeration of the two industries enhances regional economic resilience. Based on the spatial distribution of the synergistic agglomeration levels of the two industries and regional economic resilience in some provinces (cities, districts) of China, this study empirically analyzes the impact of the synergistic agglomeration of the two industries on regional economic resilience using provincial panel data. The empirical research findings reveal that an increase in the level of synergistic agglomeration of the two industries significantly promotes the improvement of regional economic resilience. The regression results by region show that this promoting effect is more pronounced in the eastern regions of China. This research provides valuable guidance for the practice of enhancing regional economic resilience through the synergistic agglomeration of the logistics and manufacturing industries.

(5)Impact of FDI patent spatial agglomeration on the indigenous firm innovation

YANG Yi wen, WANG Qiu ling ·49·

FDI patents exhibit a spatial agglomeration trend. Different from FDI capital agglomeration and industry agglomeration, it clearly shows the geographic distribution of knowledge, technology, and talent within FDI enterprises. Against the backdrop of maintaining a high degree openness to foreign investment, FDI patent spatial agglomeration can impact indigenous firm innovation. Using econometric regression models including system GMM, mediation effect tests, and panel threshold effect tests, this study utilizes empirical data from Jiangsu Province to investigate the impact of FDI patent spatial agglomeration on indigenous firm innovation. The findings suggest that FDI patent spatial agglomeration has produces a significant positive effect. This is mainly attributed to FDI enterprises’ expanding the mutual demand for products or services between FDI and indigenous firms through backward and forward linkages, thereby improving indigenous firm innovation. The study also reveals that FDI patent spatial agglomeration stimulates the innovation by facilitating the explicitization of tacit knowledge, expanding avenues for knowledge acquisition and dissemination, and accelerating tacit knowledge spillovers. Additionally, the study confirms the threshold effect of FDI patent spatial agglomeration on improving indigenous firm innovation. These findings indicate that although indigenous firms may face challenges in embedding themselves within the FDI patent agglomeration network, they can enhance their innovation development by expanding the scale of backward and forward linkages with FDI enterprises, deeply integrating into the FDI industrial and supply chains, and increasing tacit knowledge.

        (6)Covert monopoly in digital platforms

ZHAO Chi, ZHOU Qin, WANG Fei, CHEN Qi yu ·59·

As digital economy has become a crucial driver of economic growth in China, anti monopoly measures are increasingly stringent. However, traditional theories are insufficient to provide theoretical support for the policies. This poses significant challenges to regulatory innovation in digital platforms. This study reexamines monopoly in the digital economy by analyzing the pricing of platform enterprises and assesses the impact of covert monopoly in digital platforms on social welfare. The research findings demonstrate the following results: (1) When the equilibrium prices set by platform enterprises in both markets are higher than marginal costs, competitive platform enterprises in two sided markets tend to lower their price compared to monopolistic market structures. However, when cross subsidies exist between markets, competition may lead to an increase in equilibrium prices in the subsidized market. (2) Monopolistic platform enterprises no longer exhibit the “upward sloping” characteristic of market power as measured by the Lerner Index. Cross network externalities cause market failures in two sided markets while also limiting the platform enterprises’ ability to exercise price markups based on market power. (3) To achieve socially optimal prices, the government needs to offset the external contributions made by consumers on one side to the other side through industrial policies or regulatory measures, internalizing cross network externalities and bridging the gap between consumers’ private motives and social motives. (4) Platform enterprises utilize their buyer side information advantage to establish vertical control over sellers, leading to covert monopolies in platforms. The government needs to effectively supervise the “buyer side monopoly” of platform enterprises and incentivize them to transparently disclose internal information about the platform to consumers.

(7)Pathways for environmental rights protection in the New Development Paradigm

QIN Tian bao, Yuan Ye yang guang ·71·

The environmental rights in the New Development Paradigm carries forward the traditional concept of environmental rights. It emphasizes that people have the right to enjoy a beautiful ecological environment as a living condition. Its function includes creating and meeting the increasing demand for a better ecological environment, making it a new human right. As the rights cannot be entirely waived, legislators should carefully choose the pathways for their protection. Despite their moral legitimacy, the ambiguity of their content make it difficult to establish them as legal rights. Additionally, given the coherence of the legal system and social costs, implementing environmental rights in practice becomes challenging. If the protection of environmental rights is defined as a state obligation, it may achieve better results with lower social costs. Therefore, it is advisable for the state lawmaker to establish environmental rights protection as an obligation. This obligation should be developed in terms of preventing and controlling ecological environmental issues and creating a beautiful ecological environment.

(8)Market credit restoration for reorganized companies: theoretical foundations and institutional construction

        FAN Zhi yong ·82·

The bankruptcy system serves as an effective pathway for maintaining market credit by timely clearing away credit garbage. The bankruptcy reorganization it also offers the possibility of remedying credit deficiencies among market entities. To achieve this goal, it is crucial to establish a credit restoration system. The right to request credit restoration, as a derivative right of credit, is the foundation for reorganized companies to apply for credit restoration. With the dissolution of default risks and the actual exemption of corporate debts in the bankruptcy reorganization, the necessity of punitive measures for default loses its relevance. To improve the credit restoration systems for reorganized companies in China, a market oriented approach is needed. By implementing credit commitments and credit supplementation systems based on social responsibilities, a balance of interests among all parties can be effectively achieved. The institutional construction of credit restoration systems for reorganized companies in China needs a construction in fields such as finance, taxation, market supervision, and judiciary.

(9)Challenges and solutions in bankruptcy corporate governance

        LI Zhong xian ·94·

Corporate governance in bankruptcy law not only determines the survival of companies but also have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the bankruptcy system. The bankruptcy process was supposed to prioritize the interests of creditors as the ultimate goal of corporate governance. However, the triple power structure established by the Enterprise Bankruptcy Law, which revolves around creditor meetings, bankruptcy administrators, and judicial/administrative interactions, poses risks of ineffective governance rights for creditors. To address the challenge, the solution should be established based on the goal of safeguarding creditor rights. This includes emphasizing the creditor oriented principle in the performance of bankruptcy administrators’ duties and adopting the priority rule for creditors when conflicts arise between equity and debt. Additionally, new information disclosure mechanisms should be implemented to enhance the infrastructure of bankruptcy corporate governance.

(10)Influence of offspring socioeconomic status on subjective sense of well being of older parents in China

ZHANG Shun, LI Shi yang ·106·

This paper explores the influence of offspring socioeconomic status on the subjective sense of well-being of older parents. It finds that older parents’ subjective sense of well-being are significantly related with the socioeconomic conditions of their grown children, i.e., the objective physical resources and subjective symbolic resources. Among the objective physical resources, the influence of economic support is positive while that of the labor support is negative. In addition, the strength of such relation varies among different groups. To the female, the rural household and undereducated, the influence is more significant than the male, the urban household and the well-educated. The result is supported by an empirical study. This research may have important implications for the governance of aging society in China.

(11)Intertextuality in historical narratives in avant garde fiction and its new trends

        CHEN Jiao hua ·118·

Since the mid 1980s to the early 21st century, historical narratives in avant garde fiction have integrated multiple texts through collage or rewriting, thus exhibiting the characteristics of intertextuality. This intertextuality has undergone a continuous development, evolving from an exploration of narrative forms to a conscious pursuit of creative aesthetics. In recent years, it has shown new tendencies: collage based intertextuality combines collage, rewriting and retrospective elements; rewriting based intertextuality features gradually closed key narrative chains or intersperses writings on history, culture, and human nature, reflecting a diverse and integrated approach to the emotional tone, literary concepts, and historical perspectives of the works. These trends are products of the radical exploration and innovation in contemporary fiction, reflecting the development and evolution of contemporary cultural context, literary trends, and theories of subjectivity. They embody the rebellious and deconstructive tendencies of contemporary fiction, and the exploration for the possibilities and complexities of literary aesthetics.

(12)Cognitive experience replication model in the generation of Chinese polysemous words: a case study of “門(mén)” (mén)

WANG Chun jiang, PAN Wen ·125·

This paper examines the cognitive experience replication model in the generation of Chinese polysemous words by using the character “門(mén)” (mén) as an example. On the basis of the meanings derived from textual sources and contemporary usage in Chinese language, two fundamental semantic units are identified: “a doorway like entrance” and “a category or classification”. The study demonstrates that the dozens of senses associated with the character “門(mén)” are derived through repeated replication and extension of these two fundamental semantic units. This finding suggests that the process of semantic extension relies on the repeated application of existing cognitive experiences, which forms a replication pattern. This pattern not only constrains the direction of semantic extension but also shapes the semantic domain. The replication of existing cognitive experiences can be regarded as a mode of semantic evolution that possesses deductive and inferential capabilities.

(13)“Down up”: an analysis of Zhang Daoyi’s theory on the relationship between art studies and aesthetics

        REN Hua dong ·133·

In contrast to the Western academic community, its Chinese counterpart’s examination of the relationship between art studies and aesthetics is not only a matter of scholarly research but also a concern for disciplinary construction. As one of the founders of the discipline of art studies in China, Zhang Daoyi put forward a theory known as the “down up” theory. This theory has not only stimulated discussions in this regard but also justified the construction of academic disciplines such as “General Art Studies”. By emphasizing and exploring the “study” aspect of “art studies”, the research and education of art in China can move away from the traditional “intuitive experiential” mode and enter into a modern “reflection priori” paradigm that academically examines “experience”.

(14)A study on the producers of ceramic kilns in the painting “Han Xizai’s Night Banquet”

        HU Xiao bing ·141·

China has produced numerous famous paintings in the history of world art. Factors such as long time, imitations and changes of ownership make it difficult to determine the dating of these paintings. “Han Xizai’s Night Banquet” is one such painting. Historians have studied the characters, clothing, utensils, furniture, and other elements depicted in the relevant literature and the painting itself to justify their conclusions on the historical contexts of the painting. Among them, art historians rely on the visual elements when doing so. However, none of the conclusions are uncontroversial. None of the conclusions are uncontroversial, though. This paper aims to ascertain the producers of the ceramic vessels in the painting by comparing them with the excavated ceramic artifacts, and analyzing the relevant historical records.
