A pollinator (傳粉者) garden is filled with floweringplants that attract pollinators. The garden gives pollinators, including bees, butterflies and birds, a place to live and re?produce. The garden in my community was started by Angela Germano and Bridget Royce. The two women aremy fifth?grade teachers at Dover Intermediate School. Theycombined their dreams of helping the environment with a hands?on science lesson byshowing students how to create a pollinator garden.

I recently spoke with both teachers to learn more. They explained that in March2020, connecting with students was a challenge. Germano, who teaches science, andRoyce, who teaches math, applied for a grant (撥款) from National Geographic to start apollinator garden. Their goals included educating students through project?based learningand helping the environment. They imagined a project that would bring students and mem?bers of the community together.

Students designed the pollinator garden as an assignment for science class. Theteachers took the best ideas in these assignments and combined them for the final gardendesign.“We took different parts of as many projects as we could, to be able to really incor?porate all of the students feedback,”Royce said.

Students and parent volunteers help maintain the garden. Community days are heldfor weeding, planting and mulching (用覆蓋物覆蓋). Teachers hope that students willspend as much time as possible in the garden, especially as spring approaches. So far, kidshave enjoyed working on their assignments, which include reading, filling bird feeders, andscavenger hunts (尋寶游戲).

“Next steps are expanding the space and getting more kids close to the spacethroughout their day,”Royce said. Both teachers encourage students and their families tomake their own gardens, too. Even if just one student is inspired, he or she in turn can in?spire others.

“This doesnt have to be a big, expensive thing,”Germano said.“Maybe you startjust a milkweed garden, because you want to help butterflies. Start small, and find otherpeople to work with.”
