中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院芬蘭籍教授瑪麗塔·法莉瑪琪因其知華、友華、愛華,克服艱難險(xiǎn)阻毅然投身中國(guó)護(hù)理事業(yè)的感人事跡,獲得2022年度中國(guó)政府友誼獎(jiǎng),成為湖南省首位獲此榮譽(yù)的護(hù)理學(xué)領(lǐng)域外國(guó)專家。
從“背包客”到中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院教授
1986年,瑪麗塔剛剛大學(xué)畢業(yè),懷揣著對(duì)中國(guó)文化的好奇和向往,她以“背包客”的身份在中國(guó)旅行了兩個(gè)月。在那段時(shí)間里,她領(lǐng)略了中國(guó)的大美風(fēng)光,了解了中國(guó)文化,并愛上了這個(gè)在她看來(lái)“神秘的東方國(guó)家”。那時(shí)起,她的心中就有一個(gè)關(guān)于中國(guó)的“夢(mèng)”,將來(lái)一定要回到中國(guó)。
2011年起,瑪麗塔教授擔(dān)任護(hù)理學(xué)領(lǐng)域的頂級(jí)期刊International Journal of Nursing Studies副主編,她關(guān)注到中國(guó)的護(hù)理科學(xué)正逐漸發(fā)展起來(lái),雜志收到了越來(lái)越多的來(lái)自中國(guó)護(hù)理學(xué)者的投稿。于是,懷著促進(jìn)中國(guó)護(hù)理科學(xué)發(fā)展的“護(hù)理夢(mèng)”,瑪麗塔教授于2013年擔(dān)任了同濟(jì)大學(xué)的兼職教授。
2016年,她開始將工作重心放在中國(guó)。她在香港理工大學(xué)做了四年的大學(xué)教授,并擔(dān)任副院長(zhǎng)負(fù)責(zé)研究生教學(xué)工作,主要關(guān)注于開發(fā)護(hù)理博士生培養(yǎng)課程以及促進(jìn)公共精神健康服務(wù)。在香港期間,瑪麗塔教授多次來(lái)到中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院開展學(xué)術(shù)交流活動(dòng),并與中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院研究團(tuán)隊(duì)建立合作關(guān)系,推動(dòng)我國(guó)首個(gè)護(hù)理學(xué)領(lǐng)域的國(guó)際化學(xué)院的申報(bào)工作。在結(jié)束了香港的工作合同后,她來(lái)到長(zhǎng)沙、來(lái)到中南大學(xué)工作。
The Finnish professor Maritta Vaelimaeki at Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, was awarded the 2022 Chinese Government Friendship Award for her touching story of dedicating herself to nursing in China despite difficulties and her profound knowledge of, friendship with, and deep love for China.She is the first foreign nursing expert in Hunan to receive this honor.
From “backpacker” to professor at Xiangya School of Nursing,Central South University
In 1986, when Maritta had just graduated from university, she traveled to China for two months as a backpacker full of curiosity about and longing for Chinese culture.During that time, she enjoyed the incredible beauty of China, learned about Chinese culture, and fell in love with the mysterious Oriental country.Since then, she had been dreaming about China, believing she would come back to China one day.
Since 2011, Prof.Maritta has been working as the associate editor of theInternational Journal of Nursing Studies, a top journal in the nursing field.She noted that nursing science gradually developed in China as the journal received more submissions from Chinese nursing scholars.Therefore, with the “nursing dream” of promoting China’s nursing studies, Prof.Maritta took up an adjunct professorship at Tongji University in 2013.
In 2016, the focus of her work began to shift toward China.She had worked as a professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University for four years and served as Vice President in charge of teaching postgraduates.Her main interests were the development of a Ph.D.nursing curriculum and the promotion public mental health services.While in Hong Kong, Maritta paid multiple visits to Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, for academic communication activities.She established a cooperative relationship with the research team at Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, promoting the declaration of China’s first international demonstration school in the nursing field.After the termination of the work contract with the university in Hong Kong, she came to Changsha to work at Central South University.

2020年2月,瑪麗塔教授與中南大學(xué)正式簽訂合同,然而原定的行程由于2020年新冠肺炎疫情暴發(fā)而不斷延期。2020年9月,面臨外國(guó)人員入境困難、國(guó)際航班數(shù)量驟減、國(guó)內(nèi)隔離時(shí)間長(zhǎng)的重重困難,瑪麗塔教授毅然決定克服重重難關(guān)來(lái)華全職工作,任中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院教授,協(xié)助中南大學(xué)籌建國(guó)際化示范學(xué)院?,旣愃淌诘暮炞C是在中南大學(xué)多次與湖南省外辦協(xié)調(diào)下辦理的。當(dāng)時(shí)國(guó)內(nèi)外疫情嚴(yán)重,入境檢測(cè)相當(dāng)嚴(yán)格,為了進(jìn)行起飛前規(guī)定時(shí)間內(nèi)的核酸檢測(cè),瑪麗塔教授不得不連夜驅(qū)車至芬蘭首都赫爾辛基的指定核酸檢測(cè)機(jī)構(gòu),進(jìn)行核酸檢測(cè)并等待結(jié)果。飛機(jī)落地上海后,又經(jīng)歷了嚴(yán)格的入境檢測(cè)、落地核酸等一系列防疫措施。到達(dá)隔離酒店時(shí),年近60歲的瑪麗塔教授已經(jīng)近30個(gè)小時(shí)沒(méi)有休息。
剛剛來(lái)到中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院工作時(shí),她說(shuō)國(guó)外的朋友沒(méi)有在中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院的網(wǎng)站上看到有關(guān)她的資料。因此她意識(shí)到,要擴(kuò)大中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院的國(guó)際影響力,首先需要一個(gè)好的宣傳“窗口”。于是,她牽頭幫助中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院打造國(guó)際化英文網(wǎng)站,通過(guò)各種途徑宣傳,并向國(guó)外的各學(xué)校及科研機(jī)構(gòu)展現(xiàn)中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院;她積極促進(jìn)中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院與芬蘭圖爾庫(kù)大學(xué)護(hù)理學(xué)院的合作,并借助芬蘭圖爾庫(kù)大學(xué)護(hù)理學(xué)院的社交媒體,積極發(fā)布兩院校的合作進(jìn)程,宣傳中國(guó)抗疫故事,傳遞中國(guó)好聲音,將中國(guó)文化不斷向外傳播。
Building of an international English website and conveying voice for Xiangya School of Nursing
The contract between Prof.Maritta and Central South University was officially signed in February 2020.However, the initially planned trip to China was repeatedly delayed due to the pandemic.In September 2020, despite the difficulty for foreigners entering China, the sudden decrease in international flights, and the long quarantine periods in China, Prof.Maritta determined to overcome all those obstacles.She came to work in China as a professor at Xiangya School of Nursing,Central South University, assisting Central South University in planning the building of an international demonstration school.Her visa was issued due to the coordinated effort of Central South University and the Foreign Affairs Office of Hunan.Back then, the pandemic was particularly severe both at home and abroad, with strict entry testing.To complete the nucleic acid test within the defined time before the flight, she had to drive overnight to Helsinki, the capital of Finland, to an appointed nucleic acid testing facility to do the test and wait for the result.When the plane landed in Shanghai, she went through a series of quarantine procedures, including strict entry testing and nucleic acid tests upon entry.When she finally made it to the quarantine hotel, Prof.Maritta, almost 60 years old, had not rested for nearly 30 hours.
When she began to work at Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, she said her friends abroad did not see her information on the school website.This event made her realize that to expand the global influence of Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, a good “window” for promotion must first be available.Therefore, she led the building of an international English website for Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, publicized it in various ways,and presented Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, to universities and research institutes in other countries.Furthermore, she actively promoted cooperation between the Xiangya School of Nursing,Central South University, and the school of nursing of the University of Turku in Finland.Through the latter’s social media, she actively updated the progress in cooperation between the two schools, publicized China’s story of battling the pandemic, conveyed China’s extraordinary voice, and continued to spread Chinese culture to the rest of the world.
Developing international nursing talents was her original intention
Prof.Maritta always believes an international teaching platform is key to training nursing talents with good qualities and high standards for the new era.Having come to Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, she actively contributed to the cooperation with the school of nursing of the University of Turku regarding postgraduate course sharing, joint training, and communication and exchange visits.After over a half-year’s work, Prof.Maritta introduced and made availablefor free the quality courses of the school of nursing of the University of Turku to the Ph.D.students at Xiangya.“Empowering Learning Environments in Nursing Education” aims to incorporate social media into the studying environment of nursing education, providing high-quality, evidence-based nursing education to postgraduates from different countries.The course “Clinical Instruments for Evaluating Health - Development, Evaluation, and Implementation” aims to introduce frontier research instruments and the main methods of developing, evaluating,and implementing the devices in the medical environment.The courses have a unique process and form of teaching comprising course preregistration, online lectures in English, workshops, independent reading materials, seminars, and others.
以培養(yǎng)國(guó)際化護(hù)理人才為初心
瑪麗塔教授始終認(rèn)為,國(guó)際教學(xué)平臺(tái)是培養(yǎng)新時(shí)代高素質(zhì)、高質(zhì)量護(hù)理人才的關(guān)鍵。來(lái)到中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院后,她積極促進(jìn)中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院與芬蘭圖爾庫(kù)大學(xué)護(hù)理學(xué)院就研究生課程共享、聯(lián)合培養(yǎng)及交流互訪開展合作。經(jīng)過(guò)半年多的努力,瑪麗塔教授為湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院博士研究生引進(jìn)并免費(fèi)開放了芬蘭圖爾庫(kù)大學(xué)護(hù)理學(xué)院的高質(zhì)量課程。護(hù)理教育學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境的提升(Empowering Learning Environments in Nursing Education),該課程的目的是在歐洲多元文化的背景下,將社交媒體融入護(hù)理教育的學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境,對(duì)不同國(guó)家的研究生開展高質(zhì)量循證的護(hù)理教育。“用于健康評(píng)估的臨床工具——開發(fā)、評(píng)估和應(yīng)用”(Clinical Instruments for Evaluating Health—Development, Evaluation and Implementation),該課程的目的是介紹前沿研究工具,以及在醫(yī)療環(huán)境中開發(fā)、評(píng)估和實(shí)施研究工具的主要方法。課程涉及課程預(yù)注冊(cè)、全英文線上講座、工作坊、獨(dú)立閱讀材料、研討會(huì)等別具一格的教學(xué)流程和教學(xué)形式。
對(duì)于首次通過(guò)線上方式參與全英文國(guó)際課程的學(xué)生而言,這頗具挑戰(zhàn)。帶著幫助學(xué)生更好地理解國(guó)外的教學(xué)流程和形式,培養(yǎng)國(guó)際化的護(hù)理人才的初心,瑪麗塔教授想學(xué)生之所想,未雨綢繆,在課程正式開始前,對(duì)選擇了該課程的同學(xué)進(jìn)行手把手教授,講述課程流程,還對(duì)國(guó)外授課平臺(tái)MOODLE的操作方法進(jìn)行了示范,對(duì)學(xué)生的每一個(gè)問(wèn)題都進(jìn)行了悉心的解答。課程進(jìn)行期間,為了確保學(xué)生們能夠跟上課程講述,瑪麗塔教授主動(dòng)提出要陪著學(xué)生們一起學(xué)習(xí)。由于芬蘭與中國(guó)有6個(gè)小時(shí)時(shí)差,課程結(jié)束時(shí),經(jīng)常已經(jīng)到了深夜11點(diǎn)了,長(zhǎng)沙的深秋寒風(fēng)凜冽,但瑪麗塔教授一直堅(jiān)持陪伴學(xué)生學(xué)完了此次課程。她說(shuō),對(duì)于第一批代表中南大學(xué)參與國(guó)際化課程的學(xué)生,一定要保證他們能夠真正理解國(guó)際化教學(xué)的意義,跟上教學(xué)進(jìn)度,同時(shí)也要向國(guó)外大學(xué)展示我們中國(guó)學(xué)生的風(fēng)采。學(xué)生們無(wú)一不被她嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)膶W(xué)術(shù)作風(fēng)折服,將她視為學(xué)習(xí)和工作中的榜樣。
為了進(jìn)一步開闊學(xué)生的國(guó)際化視野,促進(jìn)中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院學(xué)術(shù)論文的國(guó)際化進(jìn)程,瑪麗塔教授邀請(qǐng)了護(hù)理學(xué)領(lǐng)域的頂級(jí)期刊International Journal of Nursing Studies主編、倫敦國(guó)王學(xué)院Lan Norman教授為中南大學(xué)湘雅護(hù)理學(xué)院師生線上作題為“學(xué)術(shù)論文的發(fā)表:來(lái)自編輯的建議”(Writing for publication: Top tips from an editor)的學(xué)術(shù)分享。Lan Norman教授與參會(huì)人員圍繞論文寫作及投稿中經(jīng)常遇到的困難與瓶頸進(jìn)行了交流與探討,并形象生動(dòng)地向大家傳授了論文成功發(fā)表的“金點(diǎn)子”。為了進(jìn)一步促進(jìn)學(xué)生的學(xué)術(shù)交流能力,瑪麗塔教授積極為學(xué)生尋求交流機(jī)會(huì),并協(xié)助組織中國(guó)—愛沙尼亞博士研究生科學(xué)研討會(huì)(Joint PhD Candidates' ScientificSeminar between Estonia and China,PhD-SSEC),目前該研討會(huì)已舉辦兩屆。在為期兩天的科學(xué)研討會(huì)中,學(xué)生們就自己的課題、科研方法、學(xué)習(xí)生活等多方面展開討論,這促進(jìn)了學(xué)生的國(guó)際交流能力,開闊了學(xué)生的國(guó)際化視野。
為了幫助學(xué)生了解學(xué)術(shù)前沿,培養(yǎng)嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)膶W(xué)術(shù)作風(fēng),提高學(xué)生科研寫作能力?,旣愃淌跒橄嫜抛o(hù)理學(xué)院博士研究生開設(shè)了《學(xué)術(shù)論文寫作》《隨機(jī)對(duì)照研究設(shè)計(jì)》等課程,均受到了學(xué)生們的廣泛好評(píng)。其中《學(xué)術(shù)論文寫作》課程內(nèi)容包括學(xué)術(shù)論文寫作原則、寫作技巧、科學(xué)的文章結(jié)構(gòu)、期刊選擇、寫作指南等方面?,旣愃淌诓粌H介紹Epistemonikos、Covidence等一系列前沿文獻(xiàn)檢索及管理工具,還邀請(qǐng)了Nurse Education in Practice雜志主編Roger Watson以及Journal of Advanced Nursing雜志主編Mark Hayter以編輯的視角,對(duì)學(xué)術(shù)論文寫作進(jìn)行了嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)且前沿的闡述。同學(xué)們紛紛表示,該課程不僅拓展了國(guó)際化視野、提升了自身英語(yǔ)水平,也為他們?cè)诤罄m(xù)相關(guān)領(lǐng)域的研究打下了扎實(shí)的基礎(chǔ)。
It could be a challenge for international online in international online courses taught in English for the first time.With the original intention to help students better understand how teaching is done abroad and develop international nursing talents, Prof.Maritta tried to put herself in the students’ shoes.She helped the students prepare for the course, telling them about the process, demonstrating the operation of the MOODLE teaching platform, and answering every question asked by the students in detail.During the course, to ensure the students could follow the teaching in the class, Prof.Maritta offered to study with the students.There’s a time difference of 6 hours between Finland and China,so it was often 11 pm at the end of the class.It was cold in late autumn in Changsha, but Prof.Maritta stayed with the students throughout the course.She said, “for the first group of Chinese students taking an international course representing Central South University, it must be guaranteed that they understand the meaning of international teaching and can keep up with it.We also must show how excellent Chinese students can be to foreign universities.” Students were impressed by her meticulous attitude to academic work and began to follow her example.
To further broaden the students’ global vision and accelerate the globalization process of academic papers at Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University, Prof.Maritta invited Prof.Lan Norman, the chief editor of theInternational Journal of Nursing Studies.Prof.Lan Norman is a top journalist in nursing studies and a King’s College London professor for an academic sharing meeting named “Writing for publication:Top tips from an editor.” Prof.Lan Normal and others at the conference discussed the common difficulties and problems of paper writing and submission.Engagingly, they imparted their insights into the successful publication of papers.Furthermore, to further enhance the academic communication skills of the students, Prof.Maritta actively sought out opportunities for communication for the students and helped organize the Joint Ph.D.Candidates’ Scientific Seminar between Estonia and China, Ph.D.-SSEC.So far, the seminar has been held twice.In the twoday scientific workshop, the students discussed their projects, research methods, academic life, etc., which enhanced their international communication ability and broadened their global vision.
“我將謙遜地在中國(guó)繼續(xù)我的‘護(hù)理夢(mèng)’”
來(lái)華工作后,瑪麗塔教授積極投身中南大學(xué)“護(hù)理學(xué)國(guó)際化示范學(xué)院”籌建工作,組建了引領(lǐng)亞洲地區(qū)精神衛(wèi)生護(hù)理領(lǐng)域的學(xué)術(shù)團(tuán)隊(duì),協(xié)助建成了JBI湘雅循證實(shí)踐與健康創(chuàng)新中心,全程參與了護(hù)理學(xué)碩士援外學(xué)歷學(xué)位培訓(xùn)項(xiàng)目工作,開發(fā)了5門博士生國(guó)際聯(lián)合課程,并推動(dòng)湘雅護(hù)理與芬蘭圖爾庫(kù)大學(xué)護(hù)理學(xué)院簽訂了合作協(xié)議。她身體力行,努力拓展國(guó)際合作,獲批芬蘭政府資助“護(hù)理循證領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力”和“職業(yè)生涯規(guī)劃”兩個(gè)國(guó)際教育項(xiàng)目,建立了中國(guó)9所頂尖高校和芬蘭5所高校的護(hù)理國(guó)際人才培養(yǎng)聯(lián)盟。
作為一個(gè)不會(huì)說(shuō)中文的人,沒(méi)有家人的支持,獨(dú)自適應(yīng)當(dāng)?shù)氐沫h(huán)境是不容易的。在過(guò)去的七年里,瑪麗塔教授錯(cuò)過(guò)了兒子的婚禮、母親的葬禮,她也時(shí)常表達(dá)對(duì)家鄉(xiāng)及親人的思念。然而,她始終記得當(dāng)初讓她下定決心來(lái)到中國(guó)的那個(gè)想要促進(jìn)中國(guó)護(hù)理科學(xué)發(fā)展的“護(hù)理夢(mèng)”。她常說(shuō),有了對(duì)中國(guó)護(hù)理教育與研究國(guó)際化的堅(jiān)定信念和愿景,有了可親的同事們和可愛的同學(xué)們的支持,她相信她的夢(mèng)想終會(huì)實(shí)現(xiàn)。在獲得中國(guó)政府友誼獎(jiǎng)后,瑪麗塔教授激動(dòng)地說(shuō):“我希望,中國(guó)的護(hù)理教育最終能夠提升中國(guó)公民的福祉和生活質(zhì)量,并使他們具備全球公民的理念。在這段旅程中,我學(xué)到了很多,我將謙遜地在中國(guó)繼續(xù)我的‘護(hù)理夢(mèng)’?!?/p>
To help the students understand the academic frontiers, develop a meticulous approach to academics, and improve their scientific research writing, Prof.Maritta established courses like “Academic Paper Writing” and “Randomized Controlled Study Design,” both of which received accolades from the students.Among them, “Academic Paper Writing” covers the principles of writing academic papers, writing techniques, what constitutes a reasonable paper structure, and the selection of journals and writing guides.Prof.Maritta introduced some frontier literature search and management tools like Epistemonikos and Covidence and invited the chief editors ofNurse Education in PracticeandJournal of Advanced Nursingto talk about it from the editors’perspectives in a rigorous manner that also reflects the frontier developments.The students said that the course broadened their international perspective, improved their English proficiency, and laid a solid foundation for their subsequent research in related fields.
“With modesty, I will continue my ‘Nursing Dream’ in China”
After coming to work in China, Prof.Maritta actively devoted herself to planning the building of Central South University’s “Internationalized Model School of nursing” and built an academic team that leads mental health care in Asia.She also helped create the JBI Xiangya Evidence-Based Practice and Health Innovation Center.She also participated in the Sino foreign cooperative program of nursing master’s degree between the Central South University of China and the University of California, San Francisco, developed five international joint Ph.D.programs, and facilitated the signing of the cooperation agreement between Xiangya and the school of nursing of the University of Turku.In addition, she has worked hard to expand international cooperation,and two international education programs have been approved for the Finnish government funds, namely, “Evidence-based Leadership in Nursing” and “Career Planning.” She has also forged an international nursing talent development alliance between nine top universities in China and five universities in Finland.
Speaking no Chinese and without familial support, she must have had difficulty getting used to the local environment in China.In the past seven years, Prof.Maritta missed her son’s wedding and her mother’s funeral, and she often expressed her nostalgia and how she misses her family.However, she has always borne in mind the “nursing dream” of promoting nursing in China, which made her decide to come here.She often says that with a strong belief and vision for the internationalization of nursing education and research in China and with the support of her dear colleagues and lovely students, she is confident that her dream will eventually come true.After receiving the Chinese Government Friendship Award, Professor Maritta exclaimed, “I hope that nursing education in China will ultimately enhance the well-being and quality of life of Chinese citizens and equip them with the concept of global citizenship.During this journey, I have learnt a lot and will humbly continue my’ nursing dream’ in China”.
