        A

Monday: Here I am, in the middle of nowhere. This camping trip idea is not getting off to a very good start. It’s raining and the tent leaks. The hiking seemed to take forever, and I still can’t understand how it could all have been up hill! How did I ever let my brother talk me into this? When we get home—if we ever get home—he’s going to have to do something great to get back on my good side. Maybe he should sponsor a shopping spree (狂購(gòu)) at the mall!

Tuesday: Things are looking up. The sun came out today, so we were able to leave the tents and dry out. We’re camped at the edge of a small lake that I couldn’t see before because of the rain and fog. The mountains are all around us, and the forest is absolutely beautiful. We spent most of the day dragging out everything out of our backpacks or tents and putting it where the sun could dry it out. Later in the afternoon we tried to catch the fish for dinner, but the fish were smarter than we were. At night we built a fire and sang songs happily.

Wednesday: We hiked to the far side of the lake and climbed to the top of a small peak. From there we could see how high the other mountains were and how far the forest spread around us. On the way up we passed through a snowfield!

Thursday: I caught my first fish! We followed the stream that fed the lake. After about two miles, we came to a section that Carol said looked “fishy”. She had a pack rod (竿) , which can be carried in a backpack. I asked to cast it, and I caught a fish on my first try. Carol caught a few more. But they were just too pretty to eat for lunch, so we put them back in the stream.

Friday: I can’t believe we are going home already. It will be nice to get a hot shower, sleep in a real bed, and eat junk food, but the trip has been wonderful. We’re already talking about another camping adventure next year where we canoe down a river. It’s hard to believe, but I think this city girl has a little country blood in her veins.

        1. The writer went on this camping trip because ____.

        A. she was influenced by her brother?????? B. she wanted to go fishing

        C. she enjoyed camping? ?????? ??????? D. she was tired of staying home

        A. hiked along the lake?? ??????????????? B. dried out her belongings

        C. climbed the mountain?? ????????? D. caught the fish for dinner

        3. It can be inferred that Carol had a pack rod with her because ____.

        A. she could not afford to buy a regular fishing pole

        B. she needed it to get their main source of food

        C. she thought the writer of the journal might need it

        D. she expected to go fishing while they were hiking

        B

I have been lucky enough to be right next to dolphins playing in perfect surf, using the power of the waves to travel even faster than they normally swim. There is no doubt that they are enjoying themselves and, though of course I can’t swim like a dolphin, I can experience this same fun when bodysurfing.

Bodysurfing involves riding on a wave with no help from any buoyant (有浮力的) device such as a surfboard, which makes it the “purest” form of surfing. In fact, it is one of very few extreme sports that can be practiced using nothing but human body.

Nevertheless, it is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (large flat rubber shoes). This is because they enable you to swim faster, and so catch waves and surf along them more easily. A wetsuit is also advisable unless you are bodysurfing in tropical seas. Another aid is handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to generate more speed along the wave.

These are frowned on by purists, however.

To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting pushing you forwards. Then try and cut along the surface of the wave.

Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, but it does have its own unofficial world championship—the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic — held each year at the legendary Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. Local bodysurfers compete against athletes from places such as Australia, Brazil, Japan or France, in terrifying walls of water above the razor-sharp coral reef (珊瑚礁). Famous bodyboarder Mike Stewart has won the event no fewer than 12 times, and Kelly Slater, the greatest surfer in history, has also competed.

        4. What can we know from the first paragraph?

        A. The author can bodysurf.????????????????? B. The author is a dolphin trainer.

        C. Dolphins can enjoy themselves.?????????????? D. The author can’t swim like a dolphin.

        5. What does the underlined phrase “frowned on” mean?

        A. Thought to be easy.???????????????????????? B. Believed comfortable.

        C. Found enjoyable.?????????????????????? D. Considered bad.

        6. How many aid devices are recommended as for bodysurfing?

        A. Three.??????????????? B. Four. ???????????????????? C. Five.????? ????? D. Six.

        7. What’s the author’s attitude towards bodysurfing?

        A. Disapproving.????? B. Envious.???????????? C. Favorable.????????? D. Indifferent.

        C

Going to a Comic Con is like stepping into another world full of superheroes, time travellers, monsters and robots! It is a great place to be your favorite character for a day and share your love of all things comic-related with other like-minded people.

The Ewe people of Togo, Africa, have a proverb: “Wisdom is like a baobab tree; no one individual can embrace it.” The proverb refers to the massive trees of the genus Adansonia that can live thousands of years, reach 30 meters into the sky and achieve trunk diameters of 10 meters or more. One baobab tree in South Africa is so large that a popular pub has been established inside its trunk.

Many local cultures consider baobab trees to be sacred. Others use them for their nutritious fruits, edible (可食用的) leaves and beautiful flowers.

But the size and cultural value of baobab trees has not necessarily protected them. According to research published July 5 in Biological Conservation, two of Madagascar’s endemic baobab tree species will lose much of their available habitat in the next 70 years due to climate change and human development. One species may not survive to the next century. Madagascar is home to seven of the world’s eight baobab species, six of which can be found nowhere else.

The study—by scientists from the French agricultural research center CIRAD and the University of York in England—relied on satellite images and field work to develop population estimates and distribution models for three baobab species. All three trees are currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, which has not reassessed any Adansonia species since 1998. The study suggests that two of the species should now be reclassified as critically endangered.

Unfortunately, the baobabs may not be alone in this scenario. The researchers warn that baobab trees should be considered a case study and wrote that the existing PAN system in Madagascar “is not likely to be effective for biodiversity conservation in the future” because the PANs will not always contain the ecological features necessary for the survival of the species that live inside them today. They suggest that the PAN system will need to be adapted to reflect climate change models and the ecological features that various species will need in the coming decades, but warn that the rest of Madagascar’s ecology must also be reconsidered.

        12. The author referred to a pub inside a baobab tree’s trunk to ____.

        A. show the pub’s particularity? ???????????? B. prove the wisdom of Ewe people

        C. explain the long life of baobab trees???????? D. explain the largeness of baobab trees

        13. How many baobab species live outside Madagascar?

        A. One.?????? ??????? B. Two.???? ??????????????? C. Six.?????? ????????? D. Eight.

        A. By cooperation of CIRAD and local scientists.

        B. By field work and analysis of IUCN Red List.

        C. By field work and analysis of satellite images.

        D. By estimations and analysis of satellite images.
