顧名思義，“廉政”即“廉潔政治”，英文為political integrity;但有時(shí)也指“廉潔政府”（clean government）。漢語中，該詞經(jīng)常與“反腐”（combat corruption）形影不離。

談及廉潔政府，美國政治家約翰·林奇（John Lynch）曾說：“The citizens（of New Hampshire）expect and deserve a government as clean as our mountain streams.”（公民需要像山泉般潔凈的政府。） 而說到反腐，有人曾將其與愛國主義相提并論：“Fighting corruption is not just good governance. Its self-defense. Its patriotism.”（反腐不僅僅是廉政，更是自衛(wèi)，是愛國主義。）
