Once upon a time, there is a patient with a very terrible disease for nearly 40 years. He has been lying on the roadside, he said, waiting for people to lead him to the pool edge. But he lay there nearly 40 years, still not to the pool half goal.
One day, God met him and asked, “Sir, do you want your disease to be cured (治療)?” The patient said, “Of course!People now care about nothing but themselves. They will not help me.” Hearing this, God, again, said, “Would you like to be treated?”
“Exactly! But waiting for me to climb over to the pool, the water dried up.”
God listened to the patient, then after a little angry, ask him once more, “You dont want to be treated in the end?” He said, “Yes!” God replied, “Well, you now stand up to go to the pool. Do not always find any reason that cannot be completed for its own defense.”
Hearing this, the patient was deeply ashamed and immediately stood up and went to the water edge, holding some water with his hands to drink. Just a little of it, his disease troubling him for nearly 40 years came better!
Everyone has the dream, the success of everyone. However, if you have not yet reached the dream, you should ask yourself: How much effort have I paid for my own dream? Emily and Alex were happy when their family moved to a house with a very big garden. They could climb up trees, grow flowers and even play badminton. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds.
Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise on a window. Emily went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
“It must have flown into the window,” Alex said when his sister Emily called him to have a look. “Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck (粘貼) on the window.”
“Poor thing!” Emily said.
During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows?” they wondered. Finally they found out the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldnt see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection (反射) of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window.
“Something has to be done to save the birds,” the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains (窗簾) across the windows, but this made the room dark. Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk. They made six hawks—one for each window. They stuck the hawks to the windows. They looked pretty and did not keep out much light. When the birds saw the hawks, they would fly away.
After that, there were no more dead birds. The family were much happier.

“Save the whales!” Thats what the picture on Jake Smiths bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important; that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighbourhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whales coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jakes hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing theyd have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam in their direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves receded, it stayed. Its huge body rested on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers. A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal. Jake and his family couldnt do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some way.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water—a thank you to those who had worked so hard to save its life.
31. What does the picture on Jakes wall tell us about him?
32. Why did the local people go down to the beach that morning?
33. What does the underlined word “receded” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
34. How did Jake and his family help save the whale?
35. What did the whales jump look like according to the writer?

36. Is there anything strange high up in the worlds tallest mountains? If so, is it a big bear? Is it a monkey? Or is it a kind of man? No one knows. This mystery has puzzled the world for years.
In 1887, a mountain climber found large footsteps in the snow. They looked like the footsteps of a very large man. 37. 但是人不能在雪地里不穿鞋走路!
In 1906, another climber saw many more footsteps. 38. He saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran away very quickly. Fifteen years later, a newspaper had new stories about the “something”. A mountain climber said he had seen the snowman walk slowly in the snow. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on, more and more people had stories to tell. 39. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back pictures of the large footsteps. The pictures showed clearly that the snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an apeman (猿)? And the mystery keeps growing. 40. 總有一天我們會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)是什么造成了這些巨大的足跡。
