        Current Status of Cultivating the Key Competencies of Junior Middle School English

        【摘要】:With the deepening of reform of the education system, English has become the focus of attention from all walks of life. In teaching, in addition to teaching basic theoretical knowledge, teachers should pay more attention to the cultivation of students' key competencies.? On the basis of analyzing the significance of cultivating key competencies, teachers point out the methods of cultivating key competencies in English, so as to effectively promote the all-round development of students.

        Introduction

        In recent years, there has been a trend of 'key competence' in the field of educational practice and education research. “The term “key competence” first appeared in studies by the organization for economic cooperation and developmentand the European council.”[1] .

        The characteristics of English endow the English subject with distinctive educational value which is the ability of cultivating students' intercultural cognition and intercultural communication. The "General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards" promulgated in 2017 aims to cultivate students' key English competencies, such as language ability, cultural awareness, quality of thinking and learning capacity.[2] Therefore, in the actual English teaching practice, it is imperative to cultivate students' key competences of English subjects.

        1.The Key Competencies of English Subjects

        1.1The definition of key competencies in English subjects.

        "Key competencies" means that students should have the morality and capacity to accommodate to the needs of lifelong learning and social development. “It highlights the personal cultivation, social care, native land feelings, as well as independent development, cooperative participation, and creative practices.”[4] The key competencies of the English majors include four aspects: language ability, thinking quality, cultural character and learning ability.

        2. The Current Status of the Key Competencies Teaching of English Subjects

        “The current junior high school English teaching is regarded as the pedal of exam-oriented education and further education.”[6] The function of key competencies of junior high school English training students has not been effectively implemented, which is manifested in the following aspects:

        2.1 Due to English Teaching has Become a Tool for Exam-oriented Education, and the Cultivation of Key Competencies in English Teaching has Severe Shortness..

        With the development of exam-oriented education, there is the tendency that the teaching of English curriculum in China appears to be instrumentation.At present, whether primary school English teaching or junior middle school English teaching, is affected by the examination-oriented education and becomes a tool for examination. For teachers in English teaching is to impart the knowledge required by the students' curriculum standards and show solicitude for the level of students' test scores.

        2.2 Utilitarianism Learning Attitude, Ignoring the Law of Learning English Language.

        In order to get the best achievement, junior middle school students violate the regular patterns of learning language in the process of learning English. The motivation to learn English is too utilitarian. “However, in the process of junior middle school English teaching, teachers should not only pay attention to basic knowledge, but also pay attention to students' ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as the cultivation of core qualities, so as to meet the requirements of social development for high-quality talents.” [7] As students unfamiliar with the language structure of English . In class, students are so passive that their learning efficiency is in a low level. After class, when they are doing homework, they often find difficulties.. In the results, they apply mechanically curriculum knowledge in examination.

        2.3 Lacking of Extracurricular Practice Activities.

        Many teachers cherish the efficiency of forty-five minutes in the classroom, while ignoring the extension of practice activities outside the classroom. In the English class, teachers mainly teach knowledge that students are required to apply appropriately. In class , students passively accept knowledge , which seriously hampered students' enthusiasm and self-confidence in learning English, so in extracurricular time, students don’t have interest to attend other English activities .

        Conclusion

        It is crucial for students to realize the key competencies and teaching objectives in China. Education can run on without the joint efforts of schools, families and society. Teachers also need to constantly improve their key competencies. In order to achieve excellence teaching goals, teachers should play a synergy of education and promote the physical and mental development of students.
