In western countries, kids dress up exaggeratedly1 on Halloween eve and ask for candies door to door, yelling “trick-or-treat”. But what you dont know is there is age limit to play this game.
How old is too old to go trick-or-treating? Experts say the answer to that question is anyone over the age of 12. Candy seekers ringing the doorbell over the age of 12 could face a misbehavior charge, up to 6 months in jail2, and $25 to $100 in fines. It isnt limited to the US, either. In 2017, a town in Canada banned anyone older than 16 to play this game.
Still, some parents believe they should save their kids childhood traditions for as long as possible. This was also the topic of a Today Show episode in September 2017, where in an unofficial survey, 66% of viewers said that there should be an age limit.
A Facebook post argued that all kids, regardless of age, should be allowed to take part in trick-or-treat. It was shared more than 4,000 times, with close to 700 comments, proving just how hot this debate has gotten.
Some parents argued that kids shouldnt be spoiled3. Others argued that even older kids should be encouraged to take part in the sense of wonder and excitement of October 31, and most said they were willing to give candies to whoever dressed up for Halloween. Previous scientific studies have found that participating helps children to develop into healthy, wellrounded individuals, and encourages them to develop cooperation and creativity skills.
Given how busy, anxious, and unhappy todays teenagers are, maybe a little Halloween magic is exactly what they need.
