寮步牙香街的香市歷史悠久，早在明清時期，就與廣州花市、廉州珠市、羅浮藥市被譽(yù)為廣東四大名市。但由于長期無序的發(fā)展，街道寬度僅余1.5m左右，居住環(huán)境惡劣，定期的香市交易也日漸式微。

在此次的規(guī)劃設(shè)計中，保護(hù)與更新成為了相互交織的兩個主題，在努力減少建筑密度、梳理交通、改善人居環(huán)境的更新過程中，力求更好地保護(hù)傳統(tǒng)嶺南街市的本質(zhì)特征。通過拆除違建房屋和已坍塌的建筑，拓寬了街道，提高了街區(qū)的綠化率，增加了街道中的休憩空間。在街道的復(fù)興中，街道的主人們紛紛參與到設(shè)計過程中。根據(jù)每家每戶的意見對原有建筑進(jìn)行修繕，既增加商業(yè)面積，也避免了千篇一律的商業(yè)街的出現(xiàn)。

該項目完成后，街道上逐漸多了各種各樣的香木，以及陽光下曬香的麻竹簸萁。這些居民的自發(fā)行動，讓整個街道重新煥發(fā)出迷人的魅力?！?/p>

Located in Yaxiang Street, Liaobu Town,Dongguan, there is a popular spice market with a long history. Along with the flower market in Guangzhou, the pearl market in Lianzhou, and the herb market in Luofu, this spice market has been well known as one of the "Four Famous Markets"since Ming and Qing dynasties. However, due to uncontrolled development for the long past, the street width was left about only 1.5m with an unpleasant living environment, and the regular spice transactions has been declining.

In this planning and design project,conservation and renovation are two interactive themes, to better protect the essential characteristics of a traditional Lingnan market during the renewal process of reducing building density, upgrading traffic, and improving living environment. By means of demolishing buildings that violated the codes or collapsed, the streets have been broadened, the greening rate of the block has been improved, and the open space in the street has been increased.When revitalizing the streets, the owners of the streets were also involved in the design process. The original buildings were renovated according to each household’s opinions, which not only increased the commercial area but also avoided the appearance of a monotonous commercial street.

After the completion of this project, various incense woods and hemp-bamboo winnows for drying spices appeared along the streets. These local residents' spontaneous actions have helped the whole block to coruscate attractive charm again.□
