At the opening ceremony of the 25th Local Colors Festival, which celebrates cultural diversity[多樣性]in Virginia, an old Chinese lady named Pearl Fu wasgranted[授予] the esteemed[受人尊敬的]position of Good WillAmbassador[大使].
I was fortunate enough to interview thisextraordinary[非凡的]woman on that day. Pearl Fuimmigrated[移民]to the U.S.A. in 1959. She shared Chinese culture with the local communities. Through her efforts, the Local Colors program has developed into anannual[年度的]celebration that promotes diversity and multicultural understanding. Pearl Fu also contributed her time and energy to bridge Lijiang City, Yunnan and Roanoke, Virginia. The two cities have now been sister cities for over twodecades[十年]. When asked why she spent her life working toward these goals, Pearl Fu smiled. She told me she was proud of her Chineseheritage[遺產(chǎn)]and sharing each other’s cultures could lead to better understanding in our multicultural society.
Deeply[深深地] impressed[對(duì)……印象深刻]with her experience, I waseager[渴望的]to do something during my six-month stay in Blacksburg, Virginia. What could I do? I had been a voice actor and programhost[主持人]in China. It would be wonderful to use my talents to help local kids understand Chinese language and culture better. With the help of my mom and teachers,I began to introduce Chinese culture to my classmates in the local elementary school. After class, I invited them to make and eat the traditional Chinese food jiaozi, which they thought wasextremely[非常]delicious. They wereamazed[吃驚的]and very happy to play ChineseYo-Yo[溜溜球]and paper-cutting with me. Besides, I also worked as a volunteer at Blacksburg Chinese School. I helped local American-born-Chinese children read and write Chinese Characters, and I taught international friends“nihao” and “xiexie” and told them about Chinesetaboos[禁忌]. The time flew.At the end of my stay in the States, Blacksburg Chinese School awarded[授予]me thetitle[頭銜]of “Little Ambassador of Chinese Culture”.
I came to understand Pearl Fu. Sharing Chinese culture with local communities, I found friendship, respect[尊重]and understanding among my new friends, and though I was only 11 years old at the time, my experiencesinstilled[使某人獲得]in me aprofound[深厚的]sense of pride in Chinese culture.
