Every family has something important to do. It is the same in heaven.

Once, the ruler of heaven was called away for three days. He told his mother,“You need to look after things on the earth.All you need to do is to1)grant people’s wishes.”

His mother happily agreed. She climbed on a cloud, and traveled until she came to a river.

A sailor looked up and said, “If only there were a strong wind. Then I could sail now!”The mother immediately asked the wind to blow. She passed a peach2)orchard and heard someone crying to the heavens,“Please stop this terrible wind. It will knock down all the peaches!” This was too much to3)bear for the mother and she went back to her4)palace.

The next morning, she returned to listen to wishes again. She heard an old farmer saying,“May there be rain sent today! Then I can plant my bean seeds.” So the mother made a heavy rain to fall. But on her way home, she heard a sad voice. “Oh, how I wish the weather would clear up! All my5)ginger may6)rot!” The mother was confused and went back to her palace.

On the third day, she didn’t go out to hear wishes at all. At last, the ruler returned. His mother was sorry about what had happened.

“It isn’t so difficult,” the ruler said kindly. “In fact, it’s easy when you’ve learned the way of things. You just need to send a strong wind over the rivers and a gentle one on the peaches.Make it rain in the night and let the sun shine in the day.”

His mother understood and she smiled. She said, “I only wish you had told me about all this from the very beginning!”

1. need既可作實(shí)義動(dòng)詞，也可作情態(tài)動(dòng)詞。

1) 當(dāng)need作實(shí)義動(dòng)詞時(shí)，后跟帶to的不定式。構(gòu)成否定句和疑問(wèn)句時(shí)，要借助于助動(dòng)詞do。例如：

I’ll need to get up early tomorrow morning. 明天早上我需要早起。

Does she need to look after her little brother at home? 她需要在家照看她的小弟弟嗎？

You didn’t need to tell him the news. 你不必告訴他這個(gè)消息。

2) 當(dāng)need作情態(tài)動(dòng)詞時(shí)，同can、may和must一樣，后跟動(dòng)詞原形。構(gòu)成否定句時(shí)，采用need not（needn’t）的形式；構(gòu)成疑問(wèn)句時(shí)，直接將need提至句首。

注意：當(dāng)need作情態(tài)動(dòng)詞時(shí)，它只用于否定句和疑問(wèn)句，一般不用于肯定句。例如：
